Chapter 497: Chapter 468: Unreasonable, Grabbing Credit_1

Marriage audit was an extremely critical step; his identity and the nature of his work meant he couldn’t bypass this procedure.

"Haha, that’s true," Director Qian chuckled, "Young people indeed want to get married early, I understand. I’ve noted it down, I’ll find some time to sort it out for you soon."

"Thank you, Director Qian," Huo Yingjie said, "I got engaged back in ’72, it’s been three years now. My fiancée is very pretty and exceptionally outstanding. I’m afraid if I don’t return soon and get married, I won’t be able to keep her forever!"

Huo Yingjie deliberately acted aggrieved in front of Director Qian, hoping to elicit his attention and sympathy.

"Haha, you are a very outstanding young man, don’t worry, she will wait for you," Director Qian consoled, actually understanding Huo Yingjie’s thoughts; not being able to return home or communicate for three years, how much affection could remain!

However, he couldn’t discuss this with Huo Yingjie, at least not before the work was completed!

Young people, full of youthful exuberance, act on emotion; any setback in their relationships was bound to affect their future work.

"I hope so," Huo Yingjie said with a wry smile, He Tiantian had promised she would wait for him.

However, life is unpredictable, and he didn’t feel at ease!

After returning from Director Qian’s office, Huo Yingjie treated his team to a lavish meal: Over the standard meal, he paid out of his own pocket for big plates of braised pork, sour cabbage fish, sweet and sour spareribs, and more.

The group ate until they were full and round before heading back to rest.

Huo Yingjie was exhausted, slept soundly, and when he awoke, it was already the afternoon of the next day.

Huo Yingjie didn’t know that the report he submitted had put Director Qian in a difficult position.

Director Qian originally had other matters to attend to, but thinking that Huo Yingjie was a talent worth fostering and rarely asked him for anything, he wanted to do this favor properly. However, after seeing the information in He Tiantian’s file, he became somewhat troubled.

Connection with overseas relations necessitated an investigation, but since their location was isolated and secretive, they couldn’t make a big fuss, so the matter had been put on hold.

It was simply too significant of an issue; he didn’t want Huo Yingjie to be affected because of this relationship.

Yet Director Qian hadn’t forwarded the information, though someone with their own agenda had set their sights on Huo Yingjie - or, more precisely, on the credit that Huo Yingjie was due to receive.

They had no way to take action directly, but they heard that Huo Yingjie had written a marriage request report, which Director Qian had not yet sent for a political audit.

According to conventional logic, Huo Yingjie was Director Qian’s protege. Now that Huo Yingjie had filed a marriage report, Director Qian should make it a smooth process by quickly approving it as a favor!

Yet, there was no sign of action from Director Qian?

This was against common sense!

So some people surreptitiously obtained the marriage application report that Huo Yingjie had left with Director Qian.

These people had secret channels, and they quickly acquired He Tiantian’s dossier.

Because investigation of those close to any newcomer was routine, they didn’t find it difficult to uncover information on He Tiantian.

They only knew that He Tiantian had a grandfather with overseas connections. Even though the grandfather had passed away, he was still connected!

However, they did not yet know that He Tiantian had even deeper overseas connections, as those matters were only known to a few higher-ups, and the agreements they reached with Bai Qiongyu were only known to those few people.

Huo Yingjie was completely unaware of all this.

Ever since Little Rotating Turtle followed Huo Yingjie here, it had been busy cultivating and not overly meddling in worldly affairs.

Its master was very capable, and Little Rotating Turtle didn’t feel the need to intervene in everything.

It would step in only if its master found it inconvenient to do so.

The five days of rest passed very quickly!

Though the vacation wasn’t long, everyone was young, and after the rest, they were refreshed and ready for the next round of work.

After coordination and tallying, all the small projects had been completed, and it was time to move on to the next steps: assembly and adjustment.

Because of the meticulous calculations, theoretical support, and reasonable margins for error, the assembly went smoothly, leaving only the final step.

Adjustment, testing.

Having completed ninety percent, there was just ten percent left. Everyone was incredibly excited.

If they succeeded, their small group would make history!

However, just as they were waiting for the organization to approve the test, three people entered Director Qian’s office, bringing with them more detailed information about Huo Yingjie.

Director Qian’s face darkened, and he frowned, "What are you implying with this?"

"We’d like to know what you’re implying, Director Qian!" One of the men said with a smile that was not quite a smile, "Look, it’s written clearly here, why are you shielding Huo Yingjie? According to usual practices, such a person should not participate in research missions."

Director Qian, squinting his eyes, said, "That’s just his fiancée, not yet his wife. Moreover, Huo Yingjie has been here researching for three years without any communication with the outside world; he has no contact whatsoever. Why can’t he continue on the research mission?"

"Heh, is it nepotism on your part, Director Qian?" the man said softly, "What do you plan to do about this matter?"

Seeing that these three people meant business, though they were somewhat aggressive, Director Qian sensed that their tone still left room for negotiation.

With this in mind, Director Qian had a vague idea of their motives.

"What would you like?" Director Qian asked, "Moreover, how did you get this information?"

The man chuckled and said, "Old Qian, some things are actually no secret."

Upon hearing this, Director Qian’s face turned pale; secrecy was the most basic principle within the secret base, yet this person claimed it was no secret at all!

One could easily infer that this person was quite familiar with the place; yet, normally, he was one sent from above who showed no interest in research matters. Now suddenly stepping forward, his goal was easy to guess— they were just looking to pick the fruits of someone else’s labor.

Director Qian sneered internally, "You’re already offending Huo Yingjie and the Huo Family by stealing someone else’s efforts!"

"Heh, you’re quite optimistic," Director Qian said, "Is this the reason you’re using?"

"Yes, this is the reason," the man said softly, "We’ll need your help with this matter, Director Qian!"

"Help?" Director Qian narrowed his eyes and said, "What you are doing is simply wrong. You know that Huo Yingjie is not at fault; you just want his credit. But that is Huo Yingjie’s hard work. By doing this, aren’t you disheartening the scientific researchers?"
