Chapter 490: Chapter 461: Encountering a Tomb Robber_1

The excavation work was mostly complete, and the grand tomb’s entrance was faintly visible.

Second Brother Lu didn’t waste any time and went into the tomb chamber first.

Director Yang and his archaeologists, considering the need not to damage anything valuable inside, including bricks, murals, inscriptions, and so on, worked very slowly.

But for tomb robbers like Second Brother Lu, it was different.

All they wanted were gold, silver, jewels, and some valuable vessels, so they worked faster and were more destructive. Wherever they went, it was like locusts had passed through.

Director Yang was uneasy, constantly feeling on edge, so he sent someone to Huai City to call for more staff.

After all, tomb robbers had appeared before, and this grand tomb was immensely valuable; they couldn’t be too careful.

Qi Ling, along with Old Wu, Xiao Chen, and several officers, came over to support the work here.

Upon hearing the commotion, Second Brother Lu quickly instructed his subordinates to grab what they could easily carry and flee.

By the time Director Yang and his team started excavating the main tomb, he was so furious he nearly passed out, realizing the tomb robbers had beaten them to it. Although there were still some large treasures left, many places inside were destroyed.

Fortunately, the most valuable object for research, the corpse inside the coffin, was still there.

Lying there as if asleep, quiet and peaceful, with an expression of serenity on his face.

"Is this... is this a living person or a dead person?" Xiao Chen, seeing such a sight for the first time, asked with a pale face.

"Of course, it’s a dead person, only treated with special methods," Sun Aiguo said. They had seen plenty of incorrupt bodies, but it was rare to see one preserved so well.

Putting other concerns aside, Director Yang said, "Captain Qi, this tomb has been hit by the tomb robbers, and just recently. Hurry and investigate; maybe you can still recover the stolen items."

Oh shoot, those damned tomb robbers, they’re everywhere!

And it’s unknown where they gained entry from.

Upon hearing this, Qi Ling left Old Wu and two officers behind while he took the others to pursue.

Qi Ling quickly analyzed that the tomb robbers wouldn’t have left via the back mountain of Qijia Village since there were always people coming and going, and strangers would stick out.

So, Qi Ling chased in the opposite direction.

He Tiantian and Qi Daniu began their routine of cutting grass and feeding pigs, sheep, and cows.

Qi Daniu found work through her mother, Aunt Liu, at the livestock farm. Because Qian Shikun, Sun Sihao, and the others were off repairing roads, the farm was short-staffed, especially since the winter’s fodder was finished and fresh grass needed to be cut.

"Sister Tiantian, look, I found wild chicken eggs," Qi Daniu said. She hadn’t caught the wild chicken but had found two nests of eggs.

"Great, they’re all yours," He Tiantian smiled, "Take them home and boil them."

"We’ll split them half and half," Qi Daniu suggested. "Sister Tiantian, hurry up cutting the grass so we can go home early to eat."

"Sure thing!" He Tiantian responded, picking up the pace.

The grass here was very thick, but relatively secluded.

As luck would have it, Second Brother Lu and three others were escaping through this area and spotted He Tiantian and Qi Daniu.

"Second Brother, those two girls are pretty," one of them whispered. "They’ve already seen us; what do we do now?"

He Tiantian, seeing those people laden with big and small bags and even carrying guns, looked as if they had come back from a robbery, was scared and kept backing away.

Could it be such bad luck to run into tomb robbers again?

"Daniu, run!" He Tiantian pulled Qi Daniu and started to run, worried that those people would kill them.

"Boss, they’re running," one of the men raised his gun, about to shoot He Tiantian and Qi Daniu, worried that these two women would reveal their whereabouts.

Second Brother Lu grabbed him and scolded, "You idiot, if you fire a shot, won’t you be telling the police we’re in this direction?"

He Tiantian was also convinced that these people wouldn’t dare to shoot; after all, Qi Ling and others were just three miles away at the large tomb. Maybe they had already discovered that they had stolen something from inside and were in pursuit.

"Sister Tiantian, will those people shoot?" Qi Daniu followed close behind He Tiantian, her voice trembling as she asked, pale-faced.

"No, they won’t. They’re afraid of attracting the police, so we need to run fast," He Tiantian said. "As long as we get to where there are people, we’ll be safe."

Seeing that Second Brother Lu wouldn’t let them shoot, a man asked in haste, "So what do we do now?"

Second Brother Lu, who was also talented at making quick decisions, said, "Ignore them; let’s just keep moving."

"But they’ll tell the damn police where we are!" The other three men panicked, with one eager to knock people out and do as he pleased.

"The mountain is so big, what’s there to fear?" Second Brother Lu said. "I know what you guys are thinking; you can’t stop thinking about those two good-looking girls. But don’t you think about what time it is; are you willing to lose your lives over women?"

"Boss, we..." the man argued.

"No need to talk anymore. Once we’ve sold the stuff we have, what kind of woman couldn’t we find?" Second Brother Lu said. "Last word, if you don’t leave, I will!"

Second Brother Lu’s expression was stern as he kept rebuking loudly to prevent his three brothers from making a mistake that could cost them their lives.

Thinking it over, the three men hurriedly followed their boss and left.

As for the two beautiful girls, they had to be given up, for at present, their situation was still very dangerous. If they were caught, not only would they lose the valuable things they were carrying, but they would also face prison—a loss greater than the gain.

Qi Daniu turned around and, seeing that the men had not chased after them, finally breathed a sigh of relief. "Sister Tiantian, those men didn’t follow us; should we go back and get our things now?"

"No need to get them," He Tiantian said. "Let’s go to the police first."

Leaving the items there, with no one taking them, they might get into trouble if those four people came back.

Until she saw the police and the villagers, He Tiantian felt very unsafe, and she dragged Qi Daniu toward the direction of Peach Orchard.

When they were about to reach Peach Orchard, they ran into Qi Ling.

"Captain Qi, there are four men with guns, they ran off towards the east," He Tiantian quickly said. "They were laden with big and small bags, carrying a lot of stuff. If we hadn’t run fast, they would have tried to bully us too."

Once Qi Ling heard this, he now knew which direction to start the chase from; before, he had been hesitating about which way to go.

"I got it, Tiantian, head to the cabin and don’t go that way," Qi Ling instructed. "Those are tomb robbers, cruel and capable of anything."

Just as she had guessed.

"Okay," He Tiantian replied.

"Our things are still over there!" Qi Daniu said, her mind still on those two nests of wild eggs.

"Don’t worry, we’ll ask a few more people to go over later, and we’ll retrieve them together. Right now, let’s not disturb Captain Qi’s investigation," He Tiantian said, knowing that as a police officer, Qi Ling didn’t have the time to help them with their things.
