Chapter 466: Chapter 437 Too Painful, Want to Give Up!_1

After three bolts of lightning without rain, the sky still held stars, and everyone thought they were experiencing a dry thunderstorm, unlikely to be followed by rain.

However, just after they had walked about a mile, another flash of lightning tore through the sky, followed by pouring rain, which sent Boss Lu running back with his head covered in terror.

Fortunately, the lightning was confined to the sky and did not strike the ground, so there were no casualties.

"Boss, something’s off about tonight," Hu Sanchuan said. "Do we have to call off the operation now?"

There was a hint of regret in Hu Sanchuan’s tone—he was lamenting the perfect route they had painstakingly plotted out, and now it seemed that all their long hours of digging were about to be ruined by the rain.

"With rain like this, how can we go on!" Boss Lu said irritably, standing at the cave entrance, looking up to see the bizarre lightning and heavy rain that plagued the night.

But when he looked up, amidst the flashes of lightning, he surprisingly saw a long object rolling in the sky.

"Ah!" Boss Lu yelled, startled. "There’s a dragon!"

In everyone’s mind, dragons were legendary beings capable of summoning wind and rain, hence Boss Lu’s involuntary cry.

The rest of the group, who had just lit their fires, ran to the entrance of the cave upon hearing Boss Lu’s exclamation and looked out.

Yet by that time, the lightning had disappeared, and the sky was pitch black, covered with thick clouds, obscuring everything.

"Boss, are you seeing things?" Hu Sanchuan asked. "Don’t fall for superstitious nonsense."

"Sanchuan, there are times when you shouldn’t be so arrogant," Boss Lu replied. "Others might call it superstition, but in our line of work, we see many strange things. It’s not superstition; it’s reverence."

Hu Sanchuan was taken aback. He remembered a tomb they had once robbed, where the coffin contained a corpse dressed in Qing dynasty official attire, its features lifelike but covered in white hair. Boss Lu had said it was a zombie, still fresh and thus immobile. So they did a good deed: they poured gasoline on the zombie and burned it to ash.

"Yes, Boss," Hu Sanchuan replied, believing it’s better to err on the side of belief rather than skepticism with such matters.

While everyone stood in a sullen silence with their spirits dampened, Boss Lu pointed towards the sky and shouted, "Look...!"

At that moment, five bolts of lightning, both white and red, converged in the sky in the shape of a pentagram.

"Good heavens, since when does lightning obey commands?" stammered Hu Sanchuan. "It moved to the center as if it was all agreed upon."

Boss Lu was shaken and exclaimed, "This... this could be the Flood Dragon’s Tribulation..."

He was certain that what he saw was a long object, resembling the dragons of lore.

If it was undergoing tribulation, then it was probably a Flood Dragon, not yet a full-fledged dragon.

Only if it succeeded in the tribulation would it become a true dragon.

"Tribulation?" Hu Sanchuan and the others stood agape. They had read many myths and ghostly tales and were well acquainted with this term.

"Yes, look closely," directed Boss Lu, pointing to where the five bolts of lightning were converging in the sky.

"Crack!" A loud sound echoed, lighting up the sky.

The lightning struck fiercely upon an animal of monstrous size.

The Snake King writhed in the sky, subjected to agonies it had never felt before, screeching with depleted strength.

Undergoing tribulation in the Human Realm was much harder than in the Demon Realm.

At least with the latter, its parents would be by its side to protect and share some of the burden.

But now, it had to rely solely on itself.

Rely on itself!

However, the pain was so intense that it almost gave up.

Yet, it thought of He Tiantian below, in whose heart it was the invincible Snake King, her beacon of hope.

If it gave up now, even if it didn’t die, it would be nothing more than a slightly magical snake, unworthy of its supreme heritage and failing He Tiantian’s expectations.

"Ahhhhhh..." The Snake King used its fierce roar to alleviate the pain racking its body.

All this was witnessed by Boss Lu, who was pleasantly surprised.

This was definitely a mystical creature, far more valuable than the dead relics in the tomb.

Perhaps eating its flesh wouldn’t grant immortality, but it could still extend one’s life.

Boss Lu licked his dry lips, his eyes glittering with greed, hoping that the mystical creature would fail its Tribulation so he could swoop in for the prize!

The Snake King focused all its mind and willpower on resisting the pain, needing to concentrate because only after the last wave could the Six-Day Mysterious Thunder’s trial be over.

Tiantian also saw the phenomena in the sky and shivered in fear.

That’s when He Jingyu came over, and seeing his daughter in a daze with the fire out, thought she had been frightened.

"Tiantian, if you’re scared, come inside. Don’t stand in the doorway," He Jingyu reminded her, pulling his daughter inside.

He Tiantian followed her father’s lead into the kitchen.

"What’s wrong, Tiantian?" He Jingyu asked, noting his daughter’s pallor, "Speak up, don’t scare Dad."

He Tiantian swallowed and said, "Dad, it’s nothing, I just got scared by the lightning in the sky."

"Hehe, if you don’t go out, you won’t be scared anymore," He Jingyu chuckled. "Ah, I smell roasted sweet potatoes. Have you been so out of it that they might have burnt?"

He Jingyu checked on them, finding half cooked and the other half not. He flipped the sweet potatoes over.

He Tiantian, worried about the Snake King, lost interest even in her favorite roasted sweet potatoes.

"Tiantian, what’s really the matter?" He Jingyu asked again. Had she come across something foul?

Although he was a nonreligious tech worker, faced with his daughter’s abnormal behavior, he considered those superstitions.

"I’m fine." He Tiantian smiled, swallowing the words she had on the tip of her tongue.

She had almost let slip to her father about the Snake King a moment ago.

But considering the Snake King’s contrary nature and its previous promise, in the end, He Tiantian decided to keep silent and help maintain its secret.

The sweet potatoes were ready, and He Jingyu peeled one and handed it to his daughter, saying, "Your favorite, eat it while it’s hot."

He Tiantian took the roasted sweet potato, took a bite, and the warm, sweet goodness brought a little warmth back to her chilled body.

Just then, the world outside brightened tremendously, almost illuminating the back hill.

He Tiantian quickly ran to the door. This was the sixth thunderbolt.

The last one, Snake King, you must hold on!

He Jingyu, also startled, followed his daughter to the door and looked up at the sky.

Village Chief Qi and others also noticed the anomaly, opening their doors and windows to look out.

By now, not just Village Chief Qi and He Jingyu’s party, but also the group of tomb robbers on the back hill, could clearly see the scene in the sky.

Despite its height, everyone could make out the elongated animal, continuously howling as it darted through the clouds.
