Chapter 342: Chapter 313: The Law Won’t Punish, Take Revenge Yourself (4/6)_1
Qi Ling’s gaze was sharp as he looked towards Liu Lingli.
Liu Lingli was startled and covered her mouth, knowing she had misspoken.
"I didn’t say there was poison in it, how did you know there was poison?" Qi Ling asked, seeming to confirm that Liu Lingli was indeed as suspicious as He Tiantian had described.
"I... I was just guessing." Liu Lingli argued, "When people talk about putting something in cakes, isn’t it usually poison?"
"Heh!" Qi Ling sneered, "You certainly have a sharp tongue!"
Liu Lingli’s face turned pale as she tried to keep her composure, stammering, "I really don’t know anything, and I’m not the one who poisoned them. I’m from the same hometown as the He Tiantian family; I have no grudges against them. Why would I poison them? I absolutely have no reason or motive to do so!"
Old Man Hu, hearing what Qi Ling said, also pleaded, "My daughter-in-law is not like that; we wouldn’t poison anyone."
"Whether there was poison or not, we’ll investigate," Qi Ling stated.
Just then, Hu Damao hummed a tune as he walked in, and upon seeing the police, he turned to run, thinking they were after him for stealing a chicken from Wang Shuilian’s family.
Old Hu grabbed Hu Damao and said, "Where are you running to? They haven’t even questioned you yet!"
"Heh, I wasn’t running, wasn’t running," Hu Damao replied with a forced smile, "I just have an upset stomach and was heading to the outhouse!"
"Come here, they want to ask you something!" Qi Ling said, "On August 20th, you and your wife delivered sugar cakes to He Tiantian’s family in Qijia Village..."
Hu Damao, like Liu Lingli, insisted he hadn’t poisoned anyone and claimed his own family had eaten the cakes as well.
Qi Ling took out the dried-up sugar cake and asked, "Is this the sugar cake you delivered that day?"
To prolong its preservation, the sugar cake had been dried on the kang.
Upon seeing the cake, Liu Lingli began to feel calm inside, knowing that so much time had passed with no witnesses and no evidence.
"No, no, my cake was soft and yellow," Liu Lingli said, "Not dry and hard like this one..."
"Yeah, it’s not like this. Ours was soft and delicious; my wife makes especially tasty cakes," Hu Damao commented, "This cake is so hard, it could break your teeth. This isn’t what we sent over."
Seeing that Qi Ling wasn’t leaving, Liu Lingli contended firmly, "Don’t falsely accuse us honest folk. You present a lousy piece of cake and claim it’s ours, accusing me of poisoning it."
Seeing this, Old Man Hu stepped in front of his son and daughter-in-law and said, "Yes, you can’t wrong the honest people. I could even say that He Tiantian’s family put poison in the cake themselves, framing us!"
"I didn’t say your daughter-in-law poisoned it either. I’m just asking." Qi Ling smiled and his eyes fell on Liu Lingli’s stomach, scanning it briefly.
Nevertheless, Qi Ling was quite righteous; without evidence, even if the report came from He Tiantian’s family, he wouldn’t arrest Liu Lingli.
After Qi Ling and his team left, they returned to Qijia Village.
"There’s not enough evidence to arrest anyone at the moment," Qi Ling apologized, "But I’ll continue the investigation."
He Tiantian had anticipated such a result. Although she felt somewhat disappointed, she wasn’t upset.
If the law couldn’t teach Liu Lingli a lesson, she would find another way to punish her.
He Jingyu chuckled, "You’ve worked hard nevertheless. Even though we can’t arrest Liu Lingli, at least we now know she meant us harm. Being mentally prepared, we’re no longer afraid of that woman’s malice."
"Indeed, stay on your guard. That woman is not simple; she was very composed when she saw us," Qi Ling commented, "She’s no easy opponent."
After Qi Ling led his people away, He Jingyu instructed his family to lock up the house and be extra careful.
Tiantian complied but thought to herself,
"Liu Lingli, you have no compassion, so I owe you no loyalty!"
With the help of Snake King, Tiantian successfully left a bit of Divine Sense in the mind of a gossip in Hujia Village. When the gossip woke up, there was an extra piece of information in her mind: she had seen Liu Lingli and Accountant Qi getting cozy. The child in Liu Lingli’s belly was Accountant Hu’s bastard...
Soon, Hu Damao was overjoyed to be a father!
Big Mouth’s greatest strength and flaw was her tendency to spread rumors!
A few women whispering to each other would always start by emphasizing, "You must not repeat this to anyone, okay?"
But as soon as the chattering ended, these women each found someone new to tell, stressing over and over again that it mustn’t be repeated!
Consequently, what started as a whisper soon became common knowledge in Hujia Village.
Old Man Hu and Hu Damao were bewildered by the pointing fingers and whispered comments wherever they went, having no clue as to the reason.
Later, Old Man Hu asked someone they were on good terms with and finally understood the situation.
No wonder his daughter-in-law had put on weight lately, with only her belly growing. She had developed a sensitivity to certain smells and often felt nauseous.
Old Man Hu felt sick at the thought that the child might belong to someone else.
"Big Damao, when did you and Liu Lingli celebrate your union?" Old Man Hu asked his son, noting that it wouldn’t be hard to figure out if Liu Lingli was pregnant before their marriage, without waiting for the child’s birth.
After pondering for a moment, Hu Damao said, "It was about half a month after our wedding. Liu Lingli was bathing in the water, and I... couldn’t resist. At first, she cried, but when I said I would marry her, she stopped. I thought since she was so beautiful and a city girl at that, it was a good deal to marry her!"
Old Man Hu stomped his foot in anger and exclaimed, "Liu Lingli is pregnant!"
"Ah?" Hu Damao burst out happily, "Does that mean I’m going to be a father?"
Old Man Hu smacked Hu Damao on the head, scolding, "Happy about being a father! Whose child it is, that’s still up in the air! Go, get a doctor to check Liu Lingli’s pulse and find out how many months pregnant she is."
Finally, Hu Damao understood why the villagers had been pointing at him and murmuring. It turned out he was wearing the green hat, raising another man’s woman and the son in her belly.
Old Man Hu went to fetch Wang Shuilian, and Hu Damao returned home.
But when Hu Damao got home, he searched every nook and cranny, inside and out, and couldn’t find Liu Lingli.
At the same time, Liu Lingli’s clothes were missing.
The corners of the room and his father’s bedroom showed signs of being searched.
"Liu Lingli, you dead woman!" Hu Damao jumped three feet high and cursed furiously.
When Old Man Hu came back and heard that Liu Lingli had run away, he hurried to the room to check, and slumped to the ground, cursing, "Liu Lingli has stolen all our valuable things..."
Among those items were money and two gold bracelets and several silver coins, which Old Man Hu had secretly kept.
While he could openly talk about the money, Old Man Hu dared not mention the other items.
This Liu Lingli was too cunning; she had figured out their household entirely in just a little over a month.
