Chapter 1013: Chapter 982: Looking up to Marry Off a Daughter, Looking Down to Take a Daughter-in-Law
Upon hearing Third Grandma Qi’s words, Old Master Tang and Old Madam Tang were very pleased.
It proved that they approved of their son’s transformation and his reasons and did not oppose his romance with Qi Zhengmin.
"Indeed, I said the same about Xiao Si," Old Madam Tang said, "We both really like Zhengmin. When shall we visit to propose marriage?"
Old Man Qi remained silent; after all, she wasn’t his biological granddaughter, so it wasn’t his place to decide.
Third Grandma Qi smiled, took a sip of tea, and said with a laugh, "The young people are still courting. I know they are great together, but I haven’t had a detailed discussion with Zhengmin. Since elder brother and elder sister have asked personally, I’ll find time to ask her."
Parental decree, matchmaker’s words.
Though not as old-fashioned as before, the Tang family’s willingness to be formal showed they valued her granddaughter, so Third Grandma Qi couldn’t simply refuse.
After all, her granddaughter and Tang Qian’s relationship was progressing well; they might end up together, so she couldn’t dismiss the idea outright.
Old Madam Tang also understood that they couldn’t agree to the marriage proposal on their first visit, as it was customary for the woman’s side to show some reserve.
"Alright, then, sister, please take your time. Our Tang family wants to settle this match with the utmost sincerity," Old Madam Tang said with a smile, signifying the Tang family’s sincerity.
At lunchtime, He Tiantian and Qi Zhengmin came back together, followed by Tang Qian.
Seeing his parents there, Tang Qian was also stunned and somewhat nervous, with a hint of red on his face.
His parents’ visit was probably for his marriage. He looked at Qi Zhengmin, feeling a surge of warmth in his heart.
He wanted to get married.
When Qi Zhengmin saw Tang Qian’s parents, she too blushed, her face shy. She greeted the elders and then followed He Tiantian inside, avoiding the scrutinizing gazes of the older generation.
As for Tang Qian, he stayed behind to serve tea and water, taking good care of the elders.
Old Master Huo interjected jokes from time to time, and everyone chatted in a most congenial and joyful way.
They left after having lunch, with Tang Qian personally accompanying his parents home.
"Dad, Mom, did you come here for my matter?" Tang Qian asked, a bit nervous.
"You could say that!" Old Master Tang said with a laugh, "And also to visit your Grandpa Qi!"
"Oh," Tang Qian said, "what did Grandma Qi say? Did she agree to my relationship with Zhengmin?"
"She said she needs to ask Zhengmin," Old Madam Tang chuckled. Ah, a good girl with a good family background surely plays hard to get.
Tang Qian was taken aback and turned to ask, "Dad, Mom, does Grandma Qi not agree?"
Tang Qian grew anxious, having already bowed ninety-nine times and just falling short of the last hurdle.
"Hehe, don’t worry!" Old Madam Tang laughed, the more her son cared, the less likely he was to mess things up. "They are the girl’s family; even if they’re willing, during our first visit, they couldn’t possibly agree immediately; they have to show some restraint. Let’s wait a bit and visit again to probe their intentions."
Tang Qian felt somewhat guilty and said, "I’m sorry, Mom and Dad, for putting you through this."
"What’s there to feel bad about? We’re trying to marry their beloved granddaughter; we should show such sincerity. That big sister Qi is also of the old school, valuing rules; we should comply with her," Old Madam Tang chuckled, as long as they could successfully marry Zhengmin, what did a few more trips matter?
Putting herself in their shoes, Old Madam Tang knew she’d also wait and see.
Upon hearing this, Tang Qian started to understand and said, "Mom, I get it now. When my grandniece’s in-laws came to propose, they had to come several times before agreeing.
"Exactly, that’s the principle," Old Madam Tang smiled. "It’s an age-old truth that marrying off a daughter is lofty and marrying a wife is humble. You should talk privately with Zhengmin and ask about her grandma’s attitude so we can all make better plans."
"Hmm." Tang Qian took note, determined never to act rashly again; marrying a wife to his liking was too hard. Even the entire family mobilizing might not guarantee success; Tang Qian resolved deeply.
In the evening, Third Grandma Qi called Zhengmin and He Tiantian; the three of them spoke in her room.
"Zhengmin," Third Grandma Qi asked with a smile, "Tang Qian’s parents came to propose. What do you say? If you agree, the next time they come, I’ll agree. If not, I’ll say you both still need time to adjust. Is that okay?"
Zhengmin blushed slightly, thought for a moment, and said, "Grandma, although you mentioned those conditions to Tang Qian for my sake, I think it’s a bit unfair to him. Emotionally, I have loved other men before, just never married or been unfaithful; Tang Qian’s situation isn’t that bad. Now that we’re at the stage of discussing marriage, asking him to put properties in my name proves you want something substantial from him; I understand your intentions, and I agree with your action. However, if it’s only targeted at Tang Qian, I think it’s a bit biased, so I want to add a condition. If our relationship breaks down, our marital assets should belong to the children, but I request custody. I also want to show my stance; it’s not for Tang Qian’s money that I am with him."
Zhengmin’s proposal factored in both their feelings, not just the money.
He Tiantian listened and said nothing, waiting to hear Third Grandma Qi’s opinion.
Third Grandma Qi, having heard Zhengmin’s words, didn’t respond immediately but carefully considered it, nodding and saying, "What you’re doing takes the man’s family’s dignity into account, which is good. However, I don’t regret the conditions I put forward; I’d rather be the villain. Your approach will please the Tang family, and that will make your life in their home easier; I can rest assured."
He Tiantian chuckled, "Grandma, I think we’ve always treated Zhengmin like a child, but she’s always been aware inside. Since Zhengmin has thought this through, let’s not worry about her in the future."
"Yes, she has finally grown up." Third Grandma Qi laughed, "Tiantian is not an outsider, Zhengmin, there are a few heart-to-heart words I need to say to you. No man is better than yourself; no man is as reliable as your children and family. If you ever feel aggrieved, just say it; don’t worry about us and keep it to yourself until it leads to irreparable consequences; those who care and love you the most would be hurt the most."
Zhengmin, having heard this, snuggled up to her grandma and playfully said, "Grandma, I understand now; I won’t do foolish things anymore. The world doesn’t just have love; there’s also friendship and kinship. I shouldn’t despair over minor setbacks. I have a wise grandma, an upright grandpa, loving parents, a capable brother, and a quirky sister, all of whom love me so much; no one dares to bully me."
