Chapter 510: Chapter 510: Village in the Big Mountain_1
The following clear morning, Zhang Xian started wandering around the villa after breakfast.
As per the plan, he was supposed to leave for the Dragon Mountain Range today. However, as the ladies had just started their training and he was concerned about possible issues, he decided not to rush.
He couldn’t help it. He wasn’t sure when he would return. If the ladies encountered a problem and he was not around, they would lose precious time. Some things were too complex to be communicated over a phone call.
"Zhang Xian..."
Suddenly, Mo Shaoyun approached him and said, "A few people want to meet you. Do you have the time?"
Zhang Xian curiously asked, "Who wants to meet me?"
Mo Shaoyun responded, "I don’t know them. But they insisted on meeting you. They said they want to discuss a cooperation deal."
"Hmm, you guys have always been taking care of the business. What would they discuss with me?" Zhang Xian responded with a wry smile, "Why don’t you go on my behalf? I don’t want to get involved."
Mo Shaoyun insisted, "But they specifically requested a meeting with you. I have no other alternative! I told them that I can make decisions regarding any matter of the Lingxiao Manor but they insisted that the matter of cooperation has nothing to do with it. They demanded to see you. So I had to come and fetch you. Please make some time and meet them."
"Okay!" Zhang Xian gave a resigned smile and followed Mo Shaoyun towards the office building.
When they arrived at the reception room, Zhang Xian was greeted by a man and a woman, who were both Westerners. He asked curiously, "Are you the ones who were looking for me?"
"Mr. Zhang, nice to meet you!" Both rose from their seats.
Zhang Xian signaled them to sit, "Sit down! Let’s first discuss why you wanted to meet with me. I’ve never been involved in the affairs of Lingxiao Manor. If it’s related to the Manor, then you’ve come to the wrong person."
"Can we request the lady to step out for a bit?" The middle-aged man laughed.
Zhang Xian responded, "She’s my wife. There’s no need for her to leave."
"Fine then," the man smiled, "We’re not here for Lingxiao Manor. We’re interested in your unique talent for mixing medicines."
Zhang Xian was stunned and asked, "You want me to mix medicines for you? Why are we calling this a cooperation?"
"Because it is indeed a cooperation." The man laughed, "Here’s the thing. We’re researching a new drug and we need someone who’s familiar with medicinal ingredients. If you’re interested to work with us, the price is definitely not a problem. Moreover, it does not need to involve a large amount of your time. That is, whenever you wish to leave, you can."
Filled with suspicion, Zhang Xian asked, "What kind of drug are you researching? Can you give me some details? I need to know whether it’s within my area of expertise."
With a helpless shrug, the man replied, "Sorry, we can’t reveal that to you. But you can join us first to find out. If you feel it’s not suitable or it’s not your area of expertise, we can bring you back. There’s no harm in that."
"You guys can leave now." Zhang Xian stood up and said.
The middle-aged man questioned, "Mr. Zhang, why? Do you think we can’t afford your price? You can name your price."
Zhang Xian replied, "It’s not a matter of price. It’s your answer just now that’s problematic. You said you can’t reveal it and asked me to go over. If I feel it’s not suitable, you’ll bring me back. Isn’t that superfluous? In my opinion, you guys want to take me there and have no intention to let me return, do you?"
"No... absolutely not..." The middle-aged man denied, waving his hands.
Zhang Xian asked, "Then why would you do something superfluous? Can you explain it to me?"
The woman laughed,"Look, we’re also not quite clear, so we can’t explain it to you. What field it directly involves, you’ll only know once you get there. He said that just to save face. In fact, the two of us are just messengers and have nothing to do with the research."
"I see!" Zhang Xian chuckled, "Fine! I’ll believe you guys for now. But I don’t have time right now. You’ll have to come back later."
The woman asked, "When exactly?"
Zhang Xian responded, "I can’t give you a precise time. I have to go out tomorrow and I’m not sure when I will be back."
"This..." The woman seemed displeased.
The middle-aged man hesitated for a moment before saying, "How about we leave our contact information with you? Once you have time, we can continue our discussion."
"That works!" Zhang Xian nodded and wrote down the middle-aged man’s phone number.
After seeing the pair out, a cold sneer surfaced on his face. Although he wasn’t sure about his speculation, he suspected these two were representatives of the Divine Word. They probably wanted him to participate in the research related to biohumans.
Unfortunately, he didn’t have the time now. Otherwise, he would have been interested in going along to take a look. The research work was highly confidential, so it wouldn’t be easy to find out about it immediately.
If the Divine Word was foolish enough to place all the biohuman studies in one location, they wouldn’t have gotten this far.
Even if he were to go, he would only be involved in peripheral tasks and would never get close to the core of the research. Hence, he had no intentions of leaving for now. It could wait until he had more time.
"What does that mean?" Mo Shaoyun questioned, "They wanted you to mix medicines?"
Zhang Xian smiled, "On the surface, yes. But the actual reason might not be as it appears. Don’t worry about it."
"What do you mean I shouldn’t worry about it?" Mo Shaoyun asked, "Does that mean I can’t be concerned about you?"
Zhang Xian was startled, and quickly blurted out with a smile, "No, no, that’s not what I mean. It’s just that some things are very complicated and I can’t explain them easily. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?"
Mo Shaoyun shook her head, "How would I understand if you don’t explain?"
"Umm..." Zhang Xian replied, "The issue is, there are some things you really don’t need to know, right?"
Mo Shaoyun’s eyes widened in anger, "Zhang Xian, what do you mean? What do you mean by ’Some things don’t need to be understood by me’?"
"Well..." Zhang Xian said, "I misspoke, what I meant to say was some matters are none of the business of you women. It’s for us men to handle. Why are you asking so many questions? I’m keeping this from you for your sake, to spare you unnecessary worries. I believe I’ve told you all you need to do is be happy, I’ll handle everything else."
"I want to know," Mo Shaoyun retorted.
Zhang Xian hesitated a bit, then said, "The guys earlier, they may belong to an organization. Inviting me to come over seemingly just to concoct medicine was their excuse. In reality, they wanted to capture me."
"Ah..." Mo Shaoyun exclaimed, "And you still agreed to them?"
Zhang Xian said, "If I don’t agree, how am I going to gather information about the organization? Plus, I know what I’m doing. There’s no guarantee they can handle me."
Mo Shaoyun asked, "Are you sure?"
Zhang Xian replied with a question. "Are you still unsure about my capabilities?"
Mo Shaoyun let out a bitter smile, "Alright! Some things can’t be stopped. But be careful, so that the rest of us don’t end up being inexplicably widowed."
Zhang Xian chuckled, "How could that happen? With all of you beautiful women at my side, how could I bear to leave you?"
...
Time passed quickly and a day was soon over.
The next morning, Zhang Xian took off in his Grand Cherokee right after breakfast, heading straight for the Dragon Mountain Range.
At the moment, he urgently needed to increase the power of his female companions. The more conflicts that would arise in the future, the more precarious their situation would become. Furthermore, he needed to quickly grow stronger himself. Only by breaking through the 7th level of body tempering, could he reach a power on par with the Legendary Realm. Then he could be truly worry-free, fearing no one. However, he did not possess this strength yet.
Not to mention others, even his own perverse master could easily suppress him now.
"Damn, there’s no way to go forward."
One day in the afternoon, Zhang Xian stood by a bumpy dirt road, took out a map for reference, and muttered in frustration.
After spending five days, he had almost reached the Dragon Mountain Range. According to the map, he was currently as close to the Dragon Mountain Range as he could be.
However, while there was still a drivable path ahead, going forward would only take him further away from the Dragon Mountain Range. If he wanted to enter the mountain range, starting from this point, he would have to continue on foot, walking through the forest.
"Let’s go in and have a look." Zhang Xian put away the map, found his bearings, and began to walk.
He had now reached the outskirts of the Dragon Mountain Range. A little further, and he would be in the Dragon Mountain Range proper. With some luck, there might be valuable items lying around on the outskirts waiting to be discovered.
Let it be known that there were countless types of medicinal plants, including some yet to be discovered. Even if someone frequented the area, they were not necessarily aware of them all.
"Huh? There’s a village here?"
After walking for a while, Zhang Xian noticed a number of houses not far in front of him, and there was even smoke curling up from the chimneys.
When he approached the village and heard the sound of gongs and drums, his brows furrowed. This scenario seemed to suggest a funeral was taking place.
"*&...&*..." Suddenly, a burly man approached.
Zhang Xian looked at the burly man, utterly confused.
Although he was fluent in a number of languages, he was not well-versed with the regional dialects. He did not understand a single word the burly man had said.
With a smile, he asked the man, "Uncle, can you speak Mandarin?"
"*&%...&*&..." The burly man continued to speak while gesturing dramatically.
Zhang Xian looked at the burly man with vexation. Not being able to understand the local dialect and the man’s inability to speak Mandarin made communication difficult.
This is an extremely remote village, almost cut off from the world, and finding someone who can speak Mandarin was going to be tough.
"*&*...&..." The burly man suddenly began dragging Zhang Xian deeper into the village.
Zhang Xian did not understand the man’s intentions, but he had no other choice than to follow him deeper into the village.
Before long, he was led to a house with a tent pitched in front, where people were making noises of gongs and drums. It indeed seemed like a funeral, with many people wearing hemp and mourning clothes.
Zhang Xian’s arrival drew the attention of many.
However, he did not understand a word of the chatter. The local dialect had no resemblance to Mandarin. He could not even guess what they were saying.
"Where are you from?"
Suddenly, a woman in her thirties stepped forward and asked Zhang Xian.
"You can speak Mandarin?"
Zhang Xian was overjoyed and quickly responded with a smile, "Hello, madam, I’m from out of town. I accidentally passed by. Hearing noises, I thought I would come and see. It looks like you are having a funeral?"
