Chapter 500: Chapter 500: Is There a Grave in the Mountain?_1
On that night, atop a nameless peak inside Tiandu City, several figures were moving through the woods.
These people were all dressed in clothes for moving in the night, seamlessly blending in with the darkness. As they ran, they treated trees and plants as if they were nothing, their figures agile like rabbits, clearly no ordinary folk.
Behind these few people, several other figures were maintaining a certain distance, likely following them, not daring to get too close or too far away.
"Third Elder, what do you think these guys are up to?" a middle-aged man asked.
The leading old man shook his head, "I’m not sure, but these guys are all evil cultivators. Arriving at this mountain late at night, they must have a purpose."
"Yeah, evil cultivators like to rob tombs. Judging by their haste, they might have found a tomb." another middle-aged man said: "Although tombs aren’t of much use to us, if it’s a large ancient one, there could be numerous treasures inside. There have been rumors of tomb raiders finding various things in certain tombs."
"Exactly! Some ancient tombs from time immemorial do indeed have treasures, including the fabled elixirs. Although I’m not sure why these items were chosen as grave goods, it undeniably benefits us." The Third Elder gave a cold laugh, "Let’s follow them and take a look. If there truly is an ancient tomb, we just might make a fortune."
Upon hearing these words, the eyes of the several middle-aged men lit up immediately.
"Let’s go on ahead. It’s very likely that there is a tomb." The Third Elder quickened his pace after a glint of anticipation passed through his eyes.
The middle-aged men exchanged a glance and hurried after him, looking forward to finding a tomb awaiting their excavation.
"Huh? They’ve stopped."
Half an hour later, the figures ahead came to a halt on a bald peak. Seeing this, the Third Elder hid behind a tree, chuckling coldly. "Sure enough, there is a tomb. I never expected that coming to cause trouble for Zhang Xian would lead to this windfall. It’s been a worthwhile trip!"
"Third Elder, should we attack them directly?" one middle-aged man asked.
Third Elder chuckled coldly, "Don’t rush. They haven’t located its exact position yet. We’re not as good as them when it comes to tomb-raiding."
"Then we’ll wait here."
One of the middle-aged man snickered, "With Third Elder here, those guys are not worth mentioning. We can easily crush them."
"Isn’t that stating the obvious?" another middle-aged man laughed, "Our Third Elder is a master of the Innate level, how can those underlings be compared with him?"
Third Elder glanced at the two men, clearly enjoying their flattery.
After waiting for a while, he said to the two men, "You two keep watch here. Don’t reveal our position. The rest will come with me. The tomb hasn’t been disturbed yet, they won’t be able to open it quickly. We’ll come back tomorrow morning. Of course, you two stay alert, if anything happens, alert me immediately."
"Yes..." The two men were slightly upset, but they didn’t have a choice.
Third Elder nodded, waved his hand, and led the others back the way they came. He was too dignified to handle this trivial task of watching, and he left it to his underlings to handle.
...
Early the following morning, after breakfast.
Zhang Xian walked out of the villa, about to check out the manor, when Qiu Yun hurried over.
With a smile, he asked, "Old Man Qiu, what’s your rush so early in the morning?"
Qiu Yun replied, "That guy went out again, do you want to follow him? According to the tracker, he went to that mountain again. I think something strange is going on."
"Where?" Zhang Xian asked.
Qiu Yun replied, "I’m not too sure either, but if you want to go, I can give you the tracker’s number, and you can ask for yourself."
"Okay, I’ll go there right away." Zhang Xian nodded.
After jotting down the tracker’s phone number, he didn’t dawdle, and got into his Jeep Cherokee parked in front of the villa.
Going to the mountain, he had no intention of driving his Ferrari.
"That guy, sure runs fast." Qiu Yun laughed, exchanging glances before walking away.
With an evil cultivator and two zombies in the manor, and with Zhang Xian absent, it felt like a huge burden. Now, a weight lifted off his shoulders.
...
Between the mountains, a Jeep Cherokee sped through rapidly.
At this moment, the Jeep Cherokee, as the king of off-road vehicles, fully demonstrated its performance, charging through the bumpy mountain road as if it were the flat ground, breezing through with ease.
"Is that the guy?"
After a short while, Zhang Xian noticed a figure ahead, promptly stopped at the roadside.
"Brother Xian..." Seeing Zhang Xian, the young man hurriedly waved.
Zhang Xian closed the door, walked up and asked, "Why are you standing here?"
"The car can’t go any further from here, and they went further into the mountain, so I’ve been waiting here. But don’t worry, Brother Xian. There is another guy following them up ahead!" The young man smiled reassuringly.
Zhang Xian nodded and said, "Let’s go."
"Okay! Please follow me, Brother Xian." The young man nodded and turned swiftly to take the lead.
After scanning the surroundings, Zhang Xian followed him.
About twenty minutes later, a figure gradually began to appear up ahead, darting around sneakily in the woods. It was the young man’s friend.
"Brother Xian, my brother is up ahead." The young man pointed to the figure in front and said.
Zhang Xian nodded, "Follow him!"
"Lai Zi." The young man smiled, and when he caught up, he whispered, "Wait, Brother Xian is coming."
The young man in the front turned his head and upon seeing Zhang Xian, he quickly halted, smiling, "Brother Xian, you’re here! That guy is just ahead, it’s his fourth time coming here."
"Let’s follow him first." Zhang Xian said.
The young man and Lai Zi nodded and followed behind Zhang Xian.
Ahead, the Evil Cultivator was still walking at a measured pace, with two zombies trailing behind him on either side, unaware that they were being followed.
"Wait..."
After walking for a while longer, Zhang Xian suddenly held out his hand to stop the young man and Lai Zi.
The forest seemed to come to an end, ahead were more hills, but only scattered with weeds and nothing to conceal his figure.
"Brother Xian, we always stop here. Any further and we’ll expose ourselves." The young man said.
Zhang Xian nodded, "This place is indeed not ideal. However, have you tried another direction? Didn’t you think about bypassing this bare slope to see what’s happening?"
"We...no...we haven’t..." Lai Zi said.
Zhang Xian glanced around and when he noticed that they could go around from both sides, he said, "Let’s go check it out! We won’t see anything staying here."
Lai Zi and the young man nodded, catching up with Zhang Xian’s pace. They hadn’t thought about going around before. If only they had figured it out earlier, they might have discovered the secret.
"Look, there are people on the hill. We were right over there a moment ago, unable to see them." Zhang Xian said.
The young man and Lai Zi also noticed, but they didn’t see the Evil Cultivator. They guessed that he must have seen other people on the hill and didn’t dare to go up.
"Wait..."
Zhang Xian stopped Lai Zi and the young man and said, "There are still people ahead, several parties in fact. Is there something fishy about this mountain? Why are so many people watching it?"
"Where?" Lai Zi didn’t see anything.
Zhang Xian said, "You can’t see them, but I do. Just stand here and don’t move."
Lai Zi and the young man knowing of Zhang Xian’s abilities, didn’t question it. The young man standing before them was not just an ordinary character, he was their boss from the Lingxiao Villa.
Being able to come out with Zhang Xian was exciting for them, and they hoped they could impress him.
"What are they doing?"
Suddenly, Zhang Xian noticed that the fellows were digging the ground with shovels, which he found puzzling.
Lai Zi scratched his head and said, "These guys, are they tomb raiding? Is there a grave under this tiny mound? That’s suspenseful!"
"Tomb raiding?" Zhang Xian was taken aback and then asked, "You know about this?"
Lai Zi laughed awkwardly, "I used to do it for a while, but I stopped before becoming a professional. You might not believe it, but there are some tombs you really can’t touch, people got messed up."
Zhang Xian laughed, "Have you encountered a ghost?"
"Exactly!" Lai Zi bitterly laughed, "I used to think that tomb raiding was pretty exciting, but after that time in Pingjiang, I was too afraid to do it again."
The young man got interested, "Wow, tell the whole story, you never mentioned this before!"
"Who wants to talk about this kind of thing?" Lai Zi said, "Five years ago, my master and I found a tomb in Pingjiang. We thought we could make a big haul. However, after we went in, we dug up a dumpling-like thing and my master was killed on the spot. If the dumpling hadn’t seemed unwilling to come out, I might have been wiped out by it."
"Dumpling..." Zhang Xian sighed upon hearing this.
A dumpling is also known as a zombie, a strange creature that exists somewhere between the living and the dead. But compared with the zombies cultivated by Evil Cultivators, these dumplings are far weaker.
The young man asked in surprise, "You...are you joking with me? Are there really...zombies?"
Lai Zi retorted irritably, "My master is dead, would I lie to you?"
"He’s not lying to you, there really are zombies in this world. Moreover, there are two zombies slowly approaching us." Zhang Xian laughed.
The young man and Lai Zi were thoroughly scared and quickly hid behind a tree. Given Zhang Xian’s status, it was unlikely that he was joking around with them about this. With the ongoing tomb raiding, it was normal for zombies to appear.
"Don’t worry, the zombies won’t attack you."
Zhang Xian smiled, looked over to one side, and said, "Those two zombies, you’ve seen them before, they are part of the trio we’ve been following."
"N-No way?" Lai Zi was nearly frightened out of his wits.
The young man wasn’t much better. Although he didn’t know what Zhang Xian was talking about, it seemed to be something terrifying.
"They are zombies." Zhang Xian said, "Of the three we were following earlier, only the one in front is human. The two behind him are zombies, merely under control."
"This..."
Lai Zi said, "Brother Xian, you know, I’ve always been puzzled about why those three were walking together without saying a word. Now I finally know why they were silent. There really isn’t much to talk about between a man and two zombies. Even if he wanted to talk, he might not be capable."
