Chapter 219: Chapter 219: How did I become a bastard?_1
"Damn, pulling out a gun just like that?" Zhang Xian moved in front of Zhu Yan, cooly staring at the middle-aged man and asked, "Mate, what’s your game?"
Zhu Yan was terrified, her pretty face turned pale as she hid behind Zhang Xian, unable to stop her delicate body from trembling.
She was just an ordinary girl, never exposed to such a scenario. The middle-aged man standing before her was holding a silver handgun, pointing it directly at her head.
"If you’re not afraid of death, you can go ahead." The middle-aged man did not move the gun away but instead pulled the trigger.
Zhang Xian’s eyes narrowed, he spun around, took Zhu Yan in his arms, and charged at the middle-aged man.
"Bang..."
The sound of the gunshot suddenly echoed, but Zhang Xian was no longer where he had been.
"Damn..." Seeing that Zhang Xian had evaded the bullet and was charging at him, the middle-aged man’s face changed and he desperately retreated, firing three more shots.
Zhang Xian twisted around a few times, avoiding the bullets as if he knew the direction they were going to be fired at.
The middle-aged man nearly had a shock, fired a few more shots, forced Zhang Xian to retreat, and then sprinted out of the alley at top speed.
Before coming, his employer had warned him about a skilled bodyguard around Zhu Yan, but he hadn’t paid much attention. With a gun in his hand, he was not afraid of any so-called skilful bodyguard. But when he actually faced it, he was severely frightened.
Damn it, this wasn’t some ordinary skill. It was freakish just how he managed to avoid bullets even from such a short distance.
"Fleeing pretty fast." Zhang Xian frowned.
The middle-aged man, though skilled and fast, could not escape his grasp. But with Zhu Yan here, and the man had a gun, it was impractical to chase after him.
Being forced to retreat by several bullets, he was unable to utilize some techniques to stop the man in time, allowing him to escape from the alley.
"Brother-in-law, who was that guy just now? He... he wanted to kill me, didn’t he?" Zhu Yan stammered.
Facing a few thugs was one thing. They could not harm her with her brother-in-law around. But this time was different. The man had a real gun. Who knew if he would suddenly take a shot from hiding?
"I don’t know ..." Zhang Xian shook his head, somewhat irked.
It seemed that whoever was hiding in the shadows was becoming more desperate. They’d stooped so low as to hire this level of hitman. They were clearly determined to kill Zhu Yan.
"Brother-in-law, I’m scared..." Zhu Yan clung to Zhang Xian’s arm.
Zhang Xian lightly touched Zhu Yan’s head and said with a smile, "Don’t worry, with your brother-in-law here, they won’t find it so easy to kill you."
Zhu Yan asked, "Can... can you really protect me? I’m worried that he’ll take a potshot at me."
Zhang Xian smiled and said, "It’s not about whether I can save you, it’s about how I must save you. If you were to get hurt under my watch, wouldn’t your sister tear me apart?"
Zhu Yan relaxed quite a bit when she heard that. Having witnessed Zhang Xian’s prowess at Camel’s Peak, she had a certain amount of faith in him.
Suddenly, a thought popped into her head. If she didn’t have such a capable brother-in-law, would she have been killed by now?
...
When Zhang Xian and Zhu Yan got home, Liu Xiaowen had already prepared dinner.
Zhu Qing came downstairs and, seeing Zhu Yan’s pale complexion, frowned, "Yan Yan, why are you so pale?"
Liu Xiaowen also noticed that something was wrong with Zhu Yan and asked worriedly, "Are you sick?"
Zhu Yan forced a smile and shook her head, "Mom, sis, I’m fine."
Liu Xiaowen touched Zhu Yan’s forehead, found no fever, nor any other problems, and then let go of her worries. She sat down in a chair and said with a smile, "Well, eat first then!"
Zhu Qing looked at Zhu Yan and then at Zhang Xian. She still felt something was off, even suspecting that Zhang Xian had something to do with Zhu Yan’s current state.
Nonetheless, it was not suitable to bring this up directly. For now, she didn’t pry further, just listlessly picked up her chopsticks and started eating.
Soon, the meal was finished.
Liu Xiaowen cleaned up the tableware and headed to the kitchen.
Zhu Yan wasn’t in the mood to watch TV. As soon as she finished eating, she went upstairs alone.
Zhu Qing, seeing that everyone had dispersed, turned to Zhang Xian and asked, "Zhang Xian, what’s wrong with Yan Yan? Her complexion was so pale, does she have worries she’s not telling us about?"
Zhang Xian rubbed his nose and said, "Well, you should ask Yan Yan about that, why ask me? I wouldn’t know."
"You really don’t know?"
Zhang Xian shook his head, "I don’t."
"Will you tell me or not?" Zhu Qing didn’t believe him, grabbed his ear and shouted furiously, "You have been courting other women anyway, but you couldn’t spare even my sister?"
Zhang Xian complained, "Qingqing, when did I ever make a move on Yan Yan? You’re slandering my character!"
Zhu Qing was furious, "When did you ever have a character to begin with?"
"Er... I..." Zhang Xian gave a bitter smile and said, "What happened to Yan Yan has nothing to do with me. As for what it is, I can’t tell you."
Zhu Qing glared at Zhang Xian furiously, "What do you mean? Why can’t you tell me about it? I am Yan Yan’s sister. Do you think I will believe you like this? There must be something going on between you and Yan Yan."
Zhang Xian struggled, "There’s really nothing between Yan Yan and me. She’s my aunt. How could I harm her?"
Zhu Qing said, "Then tell me what happened."
Zhang Xian, helpless, had to say, "On our way back, Yan Yan and I encountered an assassin. Yan Yan was scared. That guy, he had a gun."
"Ah..." Zhu Qing stood up abruptly, "The... the other side had a gun?"
"Yeah, why else would Yan Yan be frightened?" Zhang Xian originally didn’t want to disclose this. Zhu Yan also didn’t mention it for fear of Zhu Qing and Liu Xiaowen worrying.
Zhu Qing came to her senses, looked at Zhang Xian and said, "Zhang Xian, I only have one sister. You must be able to protect her, no matter how deadly or cruel the enemy, you must be able to handle it, right?"
Zhang Xian nodded and said, "Rest assured, I will definitely do my best to protect Yan Yan. After all, she’s my aunt."
"I trust you," Zhu Qing nodded.
Even though she said this, she still felt uncertain in her heart, "Maybe Yan Yan should not go to school for a while... We can’t give the enemy a chance."
"If Yan Yan doesn’t go to school, then the guy wouldn’t show up. Do you want Yan Yan to hide at home the rest of her life?" Zhang Xian chuckled, grabbed Zhu Qing’s hand and said, "To draw out those guys and get rid of them entirely, we need to use Yan Yan as the bait. Right now, I can’t guarantee if the people who came this time are related to your Zhu Corporation being harmed, we need to be prepared."
Zhu Qing nodded, not saying anything else. Until the hidden mastermind was exposed, they would never feel at ease.
"You go and keep Yan Yan company, I have something to do, I have to go out," said Zhang Xian.
Zhu Qing frowned, "Are you off for a secret rendezvous with Du Xinyan again?"
Zhang Xian smiled bitterly, "What secret rendezvous? What rendezvous are you talking about? Stop making it sound so nasty, okay? I’m just going over there to help her out."
Zhu Qing was angry, "Doesn’t she have people at home? Can’t she live without you? Why do you have to meddle?"
"Eh, you can’t really say that!" Zhang Xian rubbed his nose, "At Du Xinyan’s house it’s just her and her mother, her mom had a car accident last night. Given such a predicament, can I just ignore it? On the surface, she is the school beauty of Tsinghua University and the center of attention, but who knows about the difficulties she faces behind the scenes? After school, she has to help her mother run a market stall. I’m just offering a little bit of help."
"You ... I ..." Zhu Qing was speechless.
"Honey, behave, go chat with Yan Yan." Zhang Xian kissed Zhu Qing on the lips, patted his butt and left.
Zhu Qing stood still for a while before she reluctantly walked upstairs.
...
Yu Wenhui was injured and couldn’t set up a stall any longer.
Du Xinyan had to take care of Yu Wenhui. She didn’t feel like studying and returned home after class.
Looking at the pale and frail Yu Wenhui on the bed, she felt uncomfortable, "Mom, how are you feeling now? Does it still hurt?"
"It doesn’t hurt much anymore." Yu Wenhui shook her head.
Of course, the broken bones still hurt a bit, but she just didn’t want to worry Du Xinyan.
"Damn it, why hasn’t Zhang Xian shown up yet?" Du Xinyan sat on the bed, complaining as she bit her nails.
Yu Wenhui glared at Du Xinyan, "How can you talk like that about Zhang Xian? Hasn’t he helped us a lot? What else do you want from him? We could never repay him for his kindness."
Du Xinyan pouted and stopped talking.
Yu Wenhui held Du Xinyan’s hand and asked, "Xinyan, tell me honestly, what do you think of Zhang Xian?"
Du Xinyan’s face turned red, "Mom, why...why are you asking me this?"
Yu Wenhui smiled, "My biggest wish now is to see you marry a good man. Once this matter is settled, I will be at ease. However, you must not let it interfere with your studies."
"Mom, what do you mean?" Du Xinyan said, "I don’t like that jerk Zhang Xian at all! He’s not a good person."
Yu Wenhui frowned, "Why are you always like this? I think Zhang Xian is quite good, very kind and compassionate. How come, in your eyes, he becomes a jerk?"
Du Xinyan said, "He ... he’s just a jerk ..."
Seeing Du Xinyan’s unnaturally flustered face, Yu Wenhui suddenly laughed. If her daughter reacted like this, it meant she must have some feelings for Zhang Xian. Otherwise, why would she be angry?
Du Xinyan saw Yu Wenhui’s weird smile and pouted, "Mom, what do you mean by that? I certainly don’t like that jerk Zhang Xian!"
Yu Wenhui laughed, "Did I say you like him? That’s what you said."
"Ah..." Du Xinyan screamed, quickly covering her face. "Mom, I... I fell into your trap."
Yu Wenhui smiled and patted Du Xinyan’s hand, "Xinyan! Listen to your mother, Zhang Xian is a reliable man, don’t let him slip away. Happiness has to be fought for."
Du Xinyan, covering her face, said, "Mom, I’ve told you, I don’t like that jerk. Why do you keep pushing me towards him?"
Yu Wenhui knew Du Xinyan was too shy to admit her feelings, even if she liked him, so she just shook her head with a bitter smile. When it came to matters of the heart, one couldn’t be forced, and timing was everything.
"What the hell? Why did I become a jerk?"
Suddenly, Zhang Xian burst into the room, looking depressed and said, "What the hell does that mean? I’m run off my feet here, do I deserve this? Have I become a jerk?"
