Chapter 481: Chapter 491: If you’re a couple, just kiss

John Brown extended his hand to shake with Michael Weber, still maintaining his calm demeanor. He said, "It’s a pleasure to meet a prominent figure like Mr. Williams."

Michael Weber laughed heartily and said, "Mr. Brown, you must be joking. You’re the boyfriend of Miss Johnson. She’s the real big shot here. How could I compare to her? Please don’t make fun of me."

Though he spoke humbly, he implied that John Brown only managed to associate with him because of Lucy Campbell, subtly looking down on John. However, Michael Weber was a man of depth and sophistication and wouldn’t say it so directly.

"Yes, indeed. I’m just an ordinary person. Meeting Lucy feels like a dream to me, and I still think I haven’t woken up."

Lucy Campbell’s cousin, Linda Smith, wearing a long one-piece dress, was a beauty in her own right, perhaps not lacking much compared to Lucy. However, she lacked that special aura Lucy had, and appeared somewhat quaint. She curiously observed John Brown and interjected, "Are you really dating my cousin?"

John Brown looked at Lauren Smith, feeling as if he’d met the sprite-like Sandra again, understanding that the cousin must be skeptical. He replied, "Not quite, right?"

Everyone paused, confused, as they glanced at Mark Smith and John Brown, while Lucy Campbell remained calm and smiling. Linda Smith quickly pursued the matter, "What do you mean ’not quite’? It’s either yes or no."

John Brown glanced at Lucy Campbell, his eyes slightly squinted, a look of happiness and infatuation in his gaze. He said, "Lucy is so beautiful and holds such an esteemed position, while I am just an ordinary man. To be with her now, I can hardly believe it’s real."

Lucy Campbell gently held John Brown’s hand and softly said, "Whether it’s a dream or not, as long as I, Lucy Campbell, say I’ll be with you, then nothing will stop us from being together."

Her words were heartfelt and sincere, even John Brown couldn’t see any deceit in them. He unconsciously embraced the role, clasping Lucy’s hand in return, gazing deeply into her eyes as he said softly, "I believe, no matter how many look down on me, thinking I’m a toad lusting after a swan, I won’t give up."

The two interlocked their fingers and gazed deeply at each other, treating the others as if they were air.

Michael Weber felt quite uncomfortable witnessing this. He’d been introduced to Lucy Campbell with high hopes; if he successfully courted her, the W Family would soar, transcending development in the S Region and prosper across All of A Region.

He had confidence in his abilities and looks and felt assured even facing Lucy Campbell, especially with the support of his relative Lily Fisher, adding to his confidence. Who knew John Brown would appear, and judging by his closeness with Lucy, their relationship seemed genuinely deep, not a temporary arrangement.

Lily Fisher frowned and said, "Hey, hey! Could you two not treat us like we’re not here?"

Only then did John Brown and Lucy Campbell turn their attention back to the group, though their hands remained joined. A hint of blush appeared on Lucy’s face as she said, "Sorry."

Lily Fisher huffed, "Lucy, I still don’t get it. How can you be with him? Not to be rude, but I don’t see anything particularly outstanding about him."

Linda Smith readily nodded, "Yeah, cousin. I feel something’s off too. He’s way too ordinary. Why are you interested in him?"

Lucy Campbell turned to John Brown apologetically, "James, don’t mind them. They’re my dear friends, always playful in their talks, meaning no disrespect to you."

John Brown nodded, "I understand them. If it were me, I would probably think the same."

Lucy then addressed Lily Fisher and the others, "Honestly, I’m not sure either. Perhaps it’s fate. Being with James just feels easy, comfortable, a kind of happiness I’ve never experienced before."

The explanation was too vague for the group, leaving them dissatisfied. Lily intended to probe further when Lyndia Miller, who had been silent, smiled and said, "Alright, since everyone is here, let’s head inside, have some tea, chat more, and we can go easier on Lucy later."

Michael Weber felt a bit awkward. By rights, he should have left, but once he saw Lucy Campbell, he was utterly captivated. Leaving would be a waste, especially with Lily Fisher’s secret reassuring glance, persuading him to follow inside.

During those few steps, Michael made a decision to pursue Lucy Campbell. Despite her having a boyfriend, the current one seemed inadequate. He felt confident in winning her over. If it were a well-connected officer’s child in the Capital of SSUP, it might be challenging, but with someone like John Brown, it seemed infinitely easier. For him, it was a golden opportunity not to be missed.

The courtyard wasn’t just a small building; it resembled a four-sided courtyard, with a lawn in front and a large gate leading to a screen wall, behind which lay the main house and side buildings, intricately decorated with a traditional style.

Michael immediately praised, "The environment here is quite pleasant, reminiscent of Ming and Qing era courtyards. Unlike towering buildings, this place has unique craftsmanship, making it understandable why Miss Johnson and others like it here so much. It truly is an elegant location. Look at this couplet—it complements the courtyard perfectly. Remarkable!"

Listening to this guy speak, John Brown found it a bit awkward, as if he’d become eloquent after entering the courtyard. John wasn’t well-read, excelling only in tasks requiring brawn, but he certainly had no knack for poetic elegance.

Lily Fisher clapped and said, "Michael, you are indeed talented. I’ve been here several times without noticing anything special, but your words make me want to take a good look around."

Michael smiled modestly, "You’re too kind, Lily. I simply found this place novel, having never visited before." Although humble, there was an underlying hint of pride in his tone.

After a pause, Michael turned to John Brown and asked, "Mr. Brown, what do you think?"

The group, along with Lucy Campbell, looked at John expectantly.

John shrugged, "Honestly, to me, a house is just a place to shelter from the elements, no different from towers or cottages." Unable to articulate what made the place special, he simply chose not to.

Lucy’s eyes lit up, "Well said. Simplicity in all things; status and wealth are but floating clouds, chasing too many material things makes one overlook nature. James’s indifferent attitude is something I truly appreciate."

Though that wasn’t his intention, Lucy’s interpretation cast him in a transcendent light, appearing more serene than Michael. Knowing Lucy was deliberately shaping his words, he couldn’t help but smile slightly, pretending it had been his intention, "Lucy truly understands me."

Lucy chuckled sweetly, "To find a lover in life is hard; to find a confidant is even harder. With you, I have both, and I have no other wishes."

Michael internally rolled his eyes, not believing John could be so profound, but Lucy’s adept explanation left no flaws for him to expose.

They entered the living room, furnished with modern couches. Everyone sat down, and qipao-clad maidservants served tea before retreating outside.

John naturally sat beside Lucy, her hand intertwined with his effortlessly, as though they’d held hands countless times.

John felt no discomfort holding Lucy’s hand; in fact, it seemed natural. Led by Lucy, he slipped into the role of her boyfriend, forgetting he was merely playing along.

Linda Smith teasingly said, "Cousin, over the years, our family and friends have introduced countless eligible bachelors, all seemingly better than... him. No offense meant; I’m just stating facts. Yet none caught your eye. Why him?"

Linda’s question echoed the curiosity of the others—what was so special about John Brown that he captured the heart of SSUP Country’s beauty queen?

Lucy turned to John with loving eyes and said, "As I mentioned, it could be fate. I simply adore James, his lack of desire, his masculinity, and how well he treats me."

"How did you two meet then?"

"I have business in YODC City. James works at my company; that’s how we met."

"There must be a reason you two fell for each other."

Linda Smith, Lily Fisher, and Lyndia Miller bombarded the couple with questions, seemingly wanting to uncover every detail of their relationship. Lucy answered with ease, showing no reluctance.

"Alright, your words left no flaws. But if you’re truly a couple, kiss in front of us to prove it," Linda Smith giggled, making a request that stunned John Brown.
