Chapter 467: Chapter 476: Back on Good Terms
John Brown had arranged for Emma Campbell to stay at Lucy Campbell’s former residence. He had the keys, and even if he didn’t, the ordinary door lock wouldn’t pose a challenge to him.
As soon as they stepped in, Emma didn’t bother inspecting the room and said to John, "Big Brother Brown, you should leave now."
John felt even more apologetic toward Emma, holding her hand as he said, "Emma..."
"Big Brother Brown, there’s no need to say more. I understand. Don’t worry, I’m not upset. I’m actually very happy with how you’ve treated me." Saying this, Emma stood on tiptoe and kissed him gently on the cheek. She then hurriedly reached out, flustered, to wipe his face, exclaiming, "Oh no, if it leaves a mark, that’ll be awful."
John embraced Emma tightly and said, "You didn’t wear lipstick; there won’t be a mark. But you’ve left an indelible imprint on my heart."
Emma’s body softened, and after hugging him briefly, she mustered strength and pushed him out. The door slammed shut with a thud.
John shook his head, his feelings for Emma growing deeper. He was certain that there wasn’t another girl in the world better than her, at least for him.
Returning home, Sarah Grandy pouted, grabbing hold of John’s arm: "Uncle, why is your wife here? Is she trying to take you home?"
John smiled faintly and said, "No, she just came to see you."
"I don’t need her watching me, nor do I need her pity," Sarah replied stubbornly, raising her chin, her small face exhibiting defiance.
John ruffled her hair affectionately and said, "She’s not here out of pity. She’s my wife, and since I care about you, naturally she wants to care for you too."
"Hmph, I don’t need her caring for me. But Uncle, you can’t leave."
"I won’t leave."
At that moment, there was a knock on the door. John went to open it, and Gina Lopez and Sandra stepped into view. Remarkably, they were dressed alike, had the same hairstyle, and even their excited expressions were identical. This left John momentarily unable to distinguish between his wife and his sister-in-law.
Sarah peeked out from behind John to observe the two. Initially hostile toward Gina’s arrival, her curiosity quickly overtook her due to their identical appearance. Twins looking alike as children was common, but to remain so similar in adulthood was exceedingly rare.
"Wife, Sandra, are you testing me?" John laughed while scanning their faces, still unable to discern which one was his wife.
"Honey!" With one exclamation, Gina’s lips quivered slightly before throwing herself into John’s embrace.
"Brother-in-law!" Sandra also called out as she grabbed hold of John’s arm.
Finally recognizing the two, John hugged Gina apologetically, saying, "Gina, I’m so sorry."
Gina quickly responded, "It’s me who owes you an apology; I shouldn’t have been so willful."
With just those words, the two resolved their prior misunderstandings. John put his arms around Gina and led Sandra into the living room, while Sarah, her pout still prominent, turned and went to her bedroom, slamming the door loudly behind her.
The sound brought Gina and John back to their senses. Gina looked a little uneasy and said, "Sarah’s upset."
In the past, John wouldn’t have cared about Sarah’s mood, but now he couldn’t ignore it. He quickly said, "I’ll go talk to her."
"Go ahead," Gina urged, giving John a light push. Her face glowed with newfound warmth; the reunion with John had made her more forgiving than ever.
John walked straight into the bedroom and found Sarah sitting on the bed, sulking. When she saw him, her eyes flashed with a hint of joy but quickly turned sorrowful as she said, "Why are you in here? Why don’t you go hang out with your dear wife?"
John sat next to Sarah, wrapping an arm around her shoulder while smiling. "Foolish girl, it’s been ages since I last saw my wife. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, you know. It’s only natural to be a little affectionate when we reunite. Why are you upset about that?"
"Of course I’m upset! To you, it’s like I don’t exist. Ever since they came, you haven’t even glanced at me," Sarah retorted.
Indeed, this sensitive girl caught onto everything. John could only admit his mistake, saying, "You’re right, I overlooked you. That’s why I came to apologize. Don’t be mad anymore. In a few days, after Sister Emma’s vacation starts, I’ll take you all on a trip."
"Your wife is here, and you’re still going to take us out?"
"Of course, I keep my word. So, cheer up. If you want to talk to them, head out. If not, stay here."
"Why should I hide from them? I’m not timid like Sister Emma. I’ll go out and face them head-on," Sarah announced, standing up defiantly.
John stood up as well, and the two walked out of the bedroom together. Sarah clung tightly to John’s arm, making a show of it as they approached Gina.
Gina and Sandra were understanding, knowing that Sarah’s parents had recently passed away. They didn’t hold anything against her; after all, they were eight years older and saw her as a mere child.
Gina smiled gently and said, "Sarah, we’ve met before. Surely you haven’t forgotten me?"
"You’re a liar! Last time, you said you weren’t Uncle’s wife," Sarah confronted her bluntly.
Gina, seasoned by life’s challenges, easily brushed off Sarah’s accusation with a smile. "True, I didn’t say back then; my mistake."
Sarah had hoped Gina would be displeased or argue back so she could start a quarrel. But Gina’s smile paired with her straightforward acknowledgment of fault diffused the tension, leaving Sarah momentarily at a loss for words.
Gina continued, "Sarah, I’m here to see John today. We’ll head home later, so Uncle will still be yours. No problem with that, right?"
Sarah was taken aback, suspiciously staring at Gina. "You don’t plan to take Uncle away?"
Still smiling, Gina replied, "Why would I? He’s my husband. If he wants to take care of you, I’ll support him."
"But... but I like Uncle. I want to be his woman," Sarah declared, her face flushing crimson. Bold as she was, standing up to Gina, John’s rightful wife, and her graceful demeanor put her under significant pressure, forcing her to muster courage and openly state her desires.
Gina chuckled. "My husband has always attracted girls’ affection; nothing I can do about that. All I can do is be a good wife to him and remind him where his home is. Beyond that, I won’t interfere."
John felt a twinge of embarrassment; Gina’s attitude was unexpectedly generous, almost unbelievably so.
"You really don’t care?" Sarah still doubted her.
Gina nodded resolutely. "Of course not. Even though John and I are married, couples should have their own privacy. I respect him."
John was deeply moved, Gina’s stance crystal clear. She didn’t begrudge the past or future; she simply gave him enough space to breathe. As a husband, John felt immensely lucky to have her.
Sarah’s lips twitched twice before pouting and muttering, "No matter what you think, I insist on becoming Uncle’s woman."
Gina burst into laughter and teased, "If you’re fine with losing, then I have no objections. My husband would gain a young lady like you, which is quite a bargain for him. And if he profits, wouldn’t that mean I do too?"
Rolling her eyes, Sarah grumbled, "You’re unbelievably laid-back." But Gina’s kindness disarmed her, leaving Sarah no choice but to release John’s arm and quietly sit aside.
John sat between Gina and Sarah. Gina glanced at John, no longer showing the composure she had with Sarah; she seemed unsure of what to say for once.
"Brother-in-law, you haven’t even talked to me," Sandra complained from Gina’s other side, pouting forlornly.
"It’s my fault. You must’ve been worried these days."
"Of course! You’re so terrible, disappearing for so long without contacting us. My sister and I worried about you every single day, and when you returned, you didn’t even reach out. That’s even worse!"
"You’re right, I messed up. I apologize."
"An apology isn’t enough. You have to promise to report wherever you go from now on."
"I’ll definitely report to you. Once I’m back, I’ll cook, clean, and do all the chores for you both every day."
Sandra finally smiled. "You said it! From now on, you’re responsible for washing all my clothes too."
"No problem," John readily agreed. Sandra, as his sister-in-law, treated him very well after all. Washing some clothes for her wouldn’t bother him... though he wondered—would this girl make him wash her lingerie too?
This thought crossed his mind as he glanced at Sandra again. Somehow, he felt certain she would. Sandra had always been bold, often teasing him with little provocations. This method of teasing might just be added to the list.
