Chapter 424: Chapter 431 This Joke Isn’t Funny
James Brown laughed heartily and said, "Your joke is really hilarious. If you really had eyes for me, I’d just walk away with you right now."
"Alright! Then I do have eyes for you, so come with me." Lucy Campbell looked at James Brown with a teasing smile.
James Brown laughed even happier and said, "I have to say, Lucy, who would believe you could joke around with a man like this? If other men saw this, they’d be so jealous."
Lucy Campbell gave a mischievous smile and said, "How do you know I’m joking?"
James Brown rolled his eyes at Lucy Campbell and said, "I’m not stupid. You’re you, I’m me. How could you have eyes for me? Plus, I’m already a married man, so it’s even more impossible."
"A man who has experienced marriage can have a deeper understanding of it. That’s a real man, unlike those young guys who make people uneasy after getting married."
"No way? Do you actually want someone who’s been married before?" James Brown’s eyes widened.
Lucy Campbell chuckled and said, "Why not? Think about it, you divorce Gina Lopez, and I’ll go with you."
"Alright, alright, that’s worth considering. Marrying you would save me a lifetime of struggle. I’d have endless money and a status that many admire. Just thinking about it is exciting."
"You’re so annoying. When did you become so materialistic?"
"I’m just a little materialistic now."
The two chatted and laughed for a while. Lucy Campbell was half-serious, but James Brown didn’t take her words seriously at all.
A knock on the door interrupted them, and Lucy Campbell went to open the door. Smiling at Gina Lopez who entered, she said, "Gina, you aren’t worried I’ll steal your husband, are you?"
Gina Lopez blushed and quickly said, "Not at all. With anyone else, I might worry, but Lucy, how could you have eyes for this guy?"
"It seems that James is still a very excellent husband in your eyes, Gina. You better keep an eye on him and not let him run off with someone else."
Gina Lopez pretended to glare at James Brown and said, "If anyone likes him, they can take him, so I won’t be annoyed at home."
James Brown immediately protested, "Honey, I haven’t annoyed you."
"If I say you did, then you did. Can’t argue with that."
"Alright, alright, I did annoy you." James Brown quickly placated her, and Gina Lopez burst out laughing. She was more and more satisfied with her husband now.
It was the weekend, and though Gina Lopez wanted to squeeze in some work, the others had nothing to do. Lucy Campbell said to Gina Lopez, "Gina, can I borrow your husband today? I want to go shopping."
Gina Lopez readily agreed, "No problem. Husband, today you accompany Lucy."
After a little tidying up, James Brown drove Lucy Campbell and Emily Jenkins to the airport. Emily had a flight assignment today, otherwise she would have joined them shopping.
"When will I stop flying around like this? I really want to go shopping with you guys." Emily Jenkins said wistfully from the car.
Lucy Campbell chuckled softly, "If you don’t want to fly, then don’t."
"But I’m not good at anything else and can’t find a job. I’d starve to death."
"Aren’t you always having meals at James’s place? You definitely won’t starve."
Emily’s eyes lit up, "Yeah, I surely won’t starve." But she quickly shook her head and said, "I have a place to eat, but James can’t support me forever. Oh man, Big Brother Brown, you should earn more money. If you had Twenty Million Dollars, I’d let you support me. Wouldn’t that be great?"
James Brown almost choked on his own saliva and said, "When did you start thinking like that?"
"Hehe, it’s just that men nowadays are so unreliable. It’s hard to find a good husband. Good men are either married or too old. I can’t find a decent one."
James Brown huffed, "You can’t just let someone support you, right? If you really have that thought, go find someone to support you. I can’t be bothered with you."
Seeing James seemed a bit upset, Emily laughed cheekily and said, "Big Brother Brown, don’t be mad. I wouldn’t actually do it. I just feel Big Brother Brown treats me well, so having you support me would be nice. I wouldn’t consider anyone else."
James Brown felt a bit awkward from Emily’s words, while Lucy Campbell burst out laughing and said, "Emily, if Gina hears this, you might not have a place to crash for meals anymore."
Emily was startled and said, "Thanks for reminding me. I guess I shouldn’t say things like this anymore. Big Brother Brown, I don’t want you to support me. Besides, you don’t have that much money to do it, hehe..."
James Brown found himself helpless against Emily Jenkins. This girl had a big heart and was totally unguarded, speaking whatever was on her mind. The car arrived at the airport, and he glared at Emily, "Get off the car already."
Emily giggled, hopped out of the car, and dragged her suitcase towards the airport. At the entrance, she waved back at James, her flight attendant uniform attracting the eyes of countless passing men.
James Brown had just started the car when Lucy Campbell chuckled softly, "See? There are quite a few people who have their eyes on you."
James Brown laughed, "You take Emily’s words seriously? She’s just a simple girl who loves having meals at my place."
"Not necessarily. Simple-minded girls, when they set their eyes on someone, it’s hard to make them change their minds. Maybe Emily just wants to stick with you for life."
"Come on, don’t scare me. I’m already in enough chaos. If you keep talking like that, I won’t dare let her come over for meals anymore."
Lucy Campbell suppressed her laughter and said, "Okay, consider I didn’t say anything. Otherwise, if Emily has no place to eat, she’ll blame me."
James Brown thought Lucy Campbell had something important today, but it turned out she just went shopping and bought quite a lot. What she bought wasn’t any big brand, and many were cheap street vendor stuff.
"Oh, these clothes are so cheap." Lucy was buying enthusiastically, tireless in her shopping.
James Brown couldn’t help but smile and said, "Aren’t you afraid of wearing them out and being laughed at?"
"Laugh at what? These clothes have good styles, and the material is okay too. Actually, branded clothes mostly sell the brand itself. In terms of quality and craftsmanship, they aren’t necessarily better than these clothes."
James Brown laughed, "It also depends on who wears them. On you, even ordinary clothes look top tier. If you wore these to some event, you might start a trend."
"Kekeke, that’s a benefit. Absolutely no worries about clashing with someone else."
As they continued shopping and chatting, James Brown appeared casual, but his eyes constantly watched the people around them. Lucy Campbell wasn’t ordinary, and danger could come unannounced. He had to regain his alertness like when he was the second in command of the Hawk Squad.
Lucy Campbell seemed completely at ease, not worried about anything, even holding James Brown’s arm. James didn’t mind this, actually finding it easier to protect Lucy this way, as the closer she was, the easier it was to safeguard her.
"Ah!" A startled cry accompanied by a figure rushing towards James Brown. James nearly kicked the person on reflex but stopped just in time because it was Trevor Adams from the company’s HR department.
"Manager Clark, you..." David Clark rushed in front of the two, wide-eyed, and then turned to James Brown, rolling his eyes. "I finally get it. You’ve made Lucy Campbell your secretary to secure your advantage."
James Brown rolled his eyes at the chubby guy and said, "Stop talking nonsense."
Lucy Campbell had a kind smile and said, "Robert, such a coincidence running into you here."
David Clark’s face turned a bit red, and in a huff, he said, "Lucy Campbell, as your colleague, I must remind you that our Manager Johnson already has a girlfriend. You can’t bow to such evil forces."
Lucy Campbell giggled and looked at James Brown, smiling as she said, "What can I do? He’s the manager, I’m his secretary. What can I do?"
David Clark was just trying to joke around since James never put on airs, so when talking to him, David never felt any restrictions. But Lucy’s words seemed to imply something about her and James. David’s eyes widened and said, "No way? Lucy Campbell, how can you succumb to his tyranny? If you just say the word, all the male colleagues in the company will back you up to overthrow Manager Johnson!"
Lucy Campbell’s smile became even more brilliant, "Thank you, but I find Manager Johnson pretty good. He’s been really considerate, so being around him makes me happy."
"Ah ah..." David Clark held his forehead, looking up at the sky for a good ten seconds before turning to Lucy with a face of anguish. "You’re the goddess in the hearts of our company’s male employees. Goddesses are pure and should not be defiled. This is too heartbreaking."
James Brown rolled his eyes at Lucy Campbell and said, "Robert, don’t listen to Lucy’s nonsense. I’m just here to shop with her."
