Chapter 414: Chapter 421: Take a Day Off
Emma Campbell looked at the numbers on the screen, instantly stunned and stammered, "Big Brother Brown, this... this..."
James Brown had already hit "Enter" and smiled faintly, saying, "I’m giving you control of this money. You can use it however you like."
"But... this is just too much." Emma shook her head forcefully. Such a large amount utterly frightened her.
James chuckled softly, wrapped his arm around Emma’s shoulders, and said gently, "Emma, even though I can’t give you the title of being my wife, in my heart, you are my wife. Wives manage money—it’s completely normal. Besides, I didn’t give you all of it, so don’t feel any burdens."
"Big Brother Brown!" James’s words moved Emma so much that tears rolled down her cheeks, and she leaned softly on his shoulder.
"I want it too, I want it too! Uncle, I’m your wife too, and I don’t need a title either." Sarah Grandy knelt on the bed, grabbed James’s arm, and shook it hard.
James slapped Sarah’s backside playfully and said, "Quit messing! If you want to spend money, just ask Emma."
Sarah’s eyes lit up with delight, and she exclaimed, "So what you mean is, this money is for me and Sister Emma?"
"No!" James said irritably. "You’re here, and I can’t always look after you. Of course, Emma will take care of you. If you don’t behave, your Sister Emma won’t give you a dime."
Sarah’s big, round eyes darted mischievously, and then she giggled. "Sister Emma doesn’t know how to spend money—I’ll help her spend it. One million dollars, Uncle, I’m rich now! I’ve become the ultimate rich beauty. Uncle, I adore you!" As she spoke, Sarah hugged James’s neck and planted a heavy kiss on his cheek.
James was speechless and tried to push Sarah away, but the girl clung to him tightly. He had no choice but to say, "You’re so money-driven; I don’t like that."
"I’m not greedy! Even if others offered me more, I wouldn’t care. But since you’re giving it to me—no, to me and Sister Emma—I don’t feel any pressure at all. We’re both your women, so it’s only natural to spend your money. Hehe, don’t worry! I won’t use your money to keep some pretty boy."
James didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. This little girl always had the most surprising words, but he knew Sarah was a genuinely good-hearted girl underneath the chatter. Who doesn’t act out when they’re young? And what girl doesn’t have a bit of vanity? With the right guidance, it’s not an issue at all.
"Sarah." James turned to look at her, his expression serious.
Sarah had been grinning while hugging James’s neck, but when she saw his face, her own expression gradually faded. She spoke timidly, "Uncle, don’t chase me away. I’ll be good."
James patted her waist gently and said softly, "Sarah, I’m not chasing you away. I just have some things I want to say, and I hope you’ll listen seriously."
"Alright, alright. I’m listening." Sarah released James and sat down obediently, her legs tucked under her hips—a picture of pure sweetness.
James was pleased with her obedience and said, "I know you like being with me, but you’re still too young to understand what love really is. This might just be a kind of admiration for me that you’re mistaking for affection."
Sarah thought carefully for a moment, then looked directly at James and said, "Uncle, you might be right. But right now, I really love being around you. I love being close to you. Honestly, even if you wanted me to sleep with you, I’d be happy. But Uncle, you have to believe me—I’m not just some random girl. At school, plenty of boys chase after me, and I ignore them completely. Some guys try to take advantage of me, and I never let them. I only want Uncle to take advantage of me—that’s the truth."
James felt awkward hearing her words and quickly replied, "It could be because I’m older, and at home, your father hasn’t properly guided you. So maybe I seem like a father figure to you, and that’s why you enjoy being close."
"Really? Then I don’t know..."
"Hmm. So right now, you’re still unclear about it. Uncle has to be responsible for you. You’re welcome to stay here as long as you want, and I’ll frequently visit you and Emma. But you can’t act impulsively. Some things in life only happen once—once they’re gone, you can never get them back." As James spoke, his tone grew somber, bringing up memories of his parents. Now that he wanted to be filial, it was too late.
Sarah sensed James’s melancholy and grew anxious. She said softly, "Uncle, I promise I’ll behave."
"Hmm." James quickly shook off his momentary gloom, smiling as he said, "I know Sarah is a good girl—that’s why I spoil you. Otherwise, you’d have been kicked out long ago."
Sarah playfully stuck out her tongue and said, "Uncle is the best."
"And about the money: you have to listen to Emma. If Emma doesn’t agree, you can’t force her to buy things for you."
"I will! I’ll definitely listen to Sister Emma. Even though we’re both your lovers, she has seniority."
James tapped Sarah lightly on the head and teased, "You sly little girl."
Sarah giggled and rubbed her head. James’s words, although stern, made her even happier. Like Emma, she knew James’s secret—it was unlikely even his wife knew about all the money he had.
"Alright, I’m leaving now. Emma, the money is for you to spend, so don’t just save it, okay?"
Emma, who had been quiet all along, gave a bitter smile and said, "Big Brother Brown, it’s just too much—I’m scared."
"What’s there to be scared of? Just withdraw some cash for daily expenses and exchange it into Dragon Coins."
"Alright, I got it. Big Brother Brown, let me help you pack your clothes."
James got ready and headed to the door. Sarah was holding his hand and pouting, "Uncle, will you come tomorrow?"
"I can’t say for sure—it depends when I have time. But I’ll try to come frequently. In the meantime, go hang out with friends since your college entrance exams are over. Just don’t come back too late or drink too much alcohol—it’s dangerous for a girl to get drunk."
Sarah nodded vigorously, then broke into a grin. "Don’t worry, Uncle—I’d never cheat on you."
James was used to Sarah’s wild remarks and hugged Emma, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead before turning to leave.
"Me! Me! What about me?" Sarah cried out anxiously on the side.
James gave in, hugging the cheeky girl as well, though he skipped the kiss. Even though Sarah pouted, she accepted it, feeling that Uncle was no longer pushing her away like before—there was now hope.
Just as James reached for the door, his phone rang. It was Gina Lopez. Emma noticed the name instantly and said, "You should go."
James stepped out of the room before answering the call.
"Honey, I have a gathering tonight, so I probably won’t be coming home. I’ll bring Sandra along with me."
"Oh, do you need me as a bodyguard?"
"No, go do your own thing."
James had already told Gina he’d be meeting Emma earlier, but hearing Gina’s casual tone now surprised him. Was she really tolerating his relationship with Emma?
"Honey, drink less. Call me if anything happens, and I’ll come over immediately."
"Hmm, I know. But it should be fine—this gathering’s organized by the city and includes businesspeople and government officials. Nothing will happen."
"Haha, my wife is so beautiful—I truly worry." James joked.
"You better watch yourself. Don’t end up bringing home a child—I won’t let you off the hook then."
James broke into a cold sweat. "Honey... about that..."
"Alright, no need to explain. Take today as your day off—I’m hanging up."
Gina ended the call, leaving James staring at the phone, feeling dumbfounded. Gina’s intention seemed to be giving him her blessing to reconnect with his old flame—but what was her logic?
However, one thing was clear to James: Gina genuinely wanted to build a life with him. Perhaps because their marriage was rushed, Gina knew forcing him to cut ties with his past relationships might lead to bigger conflicts. Instead, allowing him time to resolve things on his own could strengthen their bond.
James thought Gina was incredibly wise and generous. It required tremendous intelligence and a vast heart to do what she did—something most women simply couldn’t achieve.
His feelings for Gina had deepened. She was treating him so well; how could he not appreciate her?
He knocked on the door. It opened immediately. Emma and Sarah were standing there, clearly eavesdropping on his phone call.
"Looks like I’m homeless tonight. I wonder if two beautiful ladies would be kind enough to take me in?" James joked with a grin, waving his phone.
