Chapter 344: Chapter 351: Red

"What do you think?" James Brown asked very calmly in return.

"If we think normally, you and Emily Jenkins are close, so close that you can casually stay at her place, and she eats at your place every day. You should have had that kind of thing happen between you, but, Emily Jenkins is a girl with no schemes, and you, even though a bit of a flirt, have strong principles on certain matters, so you probably wouldn’t have anything happen with her," said Gina Lopez as she spoke and looked at James Brown’s face. However, she couldn’t see any change in his expression, and after pausing, she added, "I asked you that because I felt like something accidental must have happened last night. Otherwise, Emily Jenkins wouldn’t have given you that kind of unusual look."

James Brown couldn’t help but admire Gina Lopez’s sharp observation, saying, "There was a little accident, but it was nothing much."

Seeing that James didn’t want to talk about it, Gina didn’t press further. She just wanted to confirm whether or not something had happened between him and Emily Jenkins. Now that she had her answer, the rest didn’t matter.

Although they had planned to return home for the weekend, an important matter came up at work, so James Brown and Gina Lopez didn’t go back to ASCS City. After handling everything, it was already Tuesday afternoon when they arrived home. As soon as they walked in, they felt that something was off about the atmosphere.

Their mother had been seriously ill, so the mood at home had been quite heavy, but today, when they came in, the house was filled with a joyful atmosphere.

"Sis, it’s great news, great news," Emily Lopez came over and warmly linked arms with Gina Lopez.

Gina was inwardly annoyed with her sister’s insensitivity. What could be so good now to make her this happy? Had she forgotten about their mother’s illness? But she didn’t want to seem overly somber, since that would only add to their mother’s mental burden. She laughed and asked, "What’s the good news?"

"Haha... Today I took mom for a check-up again. Guess what the doctor said?" Emily Lopez winked at Gina.

Gina’s heart immediately began to beat wildly with excitement as she rushed to her mother’s side, grasping her smiling mother’s hand, asking urgently, "Was there a misdiagnosis last time?"

Mrs. Lopez said cheerfully, "Yes, it turned out to be pneumonia brought on by a cold. The cold has cleared up in the last couple of days, and the shadow is gone. These hospitals nowadays really do make careless diagnoses."

"Good! Good! This is just fantastic!" Gina said, her tears flowing uncontrollably as she spoke.

Jonathan Lopez watched his daughter getting so upset and immediately gave his wife a disapproving look. This scheme concocted by the two of them had made him feel uncomfortable all these days, and it had also upset his daughter.

Mrs. Lopez secretly glared back at her husband and then patted Gina’s shoulder, saying, "Alright, it’s good news. Why the tears?"

"Yes!" Gina wiped her eyes vigorously and started chattering with her mother, holding her hand.

Gina had always been a woman of few words since she started working, but today her genuine display of emotion was something James had never seen before. Now his thoughts were not focused on this, but rather on his relationship with Gina. Now that Mrs. Lopez’s health had improved, he wondered if his marriage with Gina could also be dissolved?

The thought alone made him feel a weight lifted off his shoulders, and a radiant smile appeared on his face.

At this moment, Grace Lopez said, "I’m so happy today. Dad, Mom, Brother-in-law, let’s play a few more rounds."

At that, James’s heart wavered instantly. Playing mahjong with Grace was always a bit risqué, but Jonathan interjected, "It’s a happy day, so we should drink a few glasses. James, we didn’t have a proper drink last time you were here. Today, we father and son should drink to our hearts’ content."

Grace immediately pouted and said, "What’s the fun in drinking? Mahjong is better."

At that moment, Gina gave her sister a reproachful look, saying, "All you think about is playing. I want to have a good chat with mom."

Although playing mahjong with Grace would be risqué, James was honestly a bit afraid of that excitement. He said, "Yeah, yeah, let’s just have a good drink tonight to celebrate. I’ll do the cooking and make a few special dishes for mom."

Grace’s eyes twirled as she said, "Okay, then let’s have a good drink tonight, no more mahjong."

James was in a good mood today, cooking a full table of dishes, and then he opened a bottle of good white liquor with Jonathan, while Gina and her daughters opened a bottle of red wine.

Jonathan and his wife didn’t have to keep up appearances anymore, so they were relaxed. Gina was truly happy from the bottom of her heart because her mother wasn’t ill, and James was at ease because he could now sort things out with Gina, with only Grace occasionally glancing around, seemingly up to something.

"Brother-in-law, come, let me pour you a drink. Sister, you have some more too. Forget about work today, just enjoy some family happiness." Emily Lopez was really indefatigable in pouring drinks for James Brown and Gina Lopez today.

After drinking most of a bottle of white liquor, normally James could hold his drink, but today he felt dizzy as if he were already drunk.

Gina had long since returned to her room, drunk and asleep, and Jonathan Lopez and his wife were also quite tipsy. Only Emily was still lively and alert.

After another drink with Jonathan, James also became blackout drunk. Jonathan and Emily helped James to Gina’s room, and then Jonathan and his wife retired to their own room as well.

Emily went back to her room too, but after more than half an hour, she sneaked out again. Cautiously, she opened Gina’s room, stepped inside for over ten minutes, and then slipped out, a rather self-satisfied smile on her face. But then a blush of embarrassment flooded her cheeks; it was unclear what she’d seen or done in the room.

The next morning, James woke up with a headache, unusual after drinking. He rubbed his temples which were still sore.

But he stopped rubbing when he realised someone was lying next to him. Staying with Gina at her house was one thing, but what was abnormal was... that he and Gina were both stark naked, not wearing a single piece of clothing.

James was shocked and tried to recall the events of last night, but besides what he remembered before getting drunk, the rest was a blank.

Carefully lifting the blanket and glancing at the bed sheet beneath them, James almost lost his mind. On Gina’s side, there was a stark red stain on the sheet, clear evidence of what had occurred between them.

Right now, James truly didn’t know what to think. He had thought his relationship with Gina was over, but now things had turned out like this. He had actually slept with Gina, and she was still a virgin.

Though the idea of taking responsibility after having sex might seem clichéd, Gina was already twenty-six and still a virgin. This showed what kind of pure and self-respecting girl she was and that her first time mattered a lot to her. Now that he took that from her, it wouldn’t be right to abandon responsibility.

"Mm..." Gina made a sound and then opened her eyes, followed by a frown.

This reaction was clearly normal after experiencing forbidden pleasure for the first time.

"Ah! You..." Gina too noticed that neither she nor James were dressed, and she sat up abruptly, also glancing at the sheet before her complexion turned very ugly.

James gave a dry laugh and said, "Sorry, I drank too much last night and somehow..."

Gina did not scream or cry but just stared blankly at the bedsheet and let out a sigh, saying, "It doesn’t matter, just a drunken mistake."

This made James feel even more awkward as he said, "I really drank too much last night and don’t remember anything."

"I don’t know either." Gina gave a self-deprecating smile and continued, "A few days ago, I was still thinking about how to sleep with you to have a child, and now it’s happened without any rush. It’s quite funny."

James twitched the corner of his mouth, found his clothes on the floor, lit a cigarette, and took several puffs. "Gina, although this was an accident, I will take responsibility."

A man must stand up and face his actions, even if they’re accidental — he cannot shirk responsibility, so James still said those words.

At that moment, Gina lay back down, looked at James sidelong, and said, "Do you think I’m someone who would make you take responsibility for me because of this relationshhip?"

James took a drag of his cigarette, of course hoping that Gina wouldn’t insist he take responsibility, but he couldn’t evade the matter either. "I know you’re not like that, but you’ve still been hurt. In this respect, women definitely suffer losses."

"Humph, what kind of society are we living in now? You can’t be that old-fashioned. Come on, get up, I need to clean up too," Gina pushed James.

Gina appeared relaxed, but James clearly knew she was hiding her true feelings, not wanting to show weakness in front of him. Gina was a strong-willed woman; she wouldn’t accept being tied down by a relationship because of this incident.

Logically, James should feel relieved, but he felt nothing of the sort. Being with a conservative woman, feeling pressured, was far different from sleeping with a hundred casual women.
