Chapter 335: Chapter 341: Sarah Grandy’s Parents Come Knocking
Before knocking off in the evening, James Brown already wanted to leave the company early, as he was genuinely afraid that Gina Lopez would ask him to stay at her place. Even though they had lived together countless times before, now James simply couldn’t face Gina alone, especially in the confines of a home.
However, before he could leave, his phone rang—it was Gina Lopez calling.
James wanted to ignore the call, but thinking that avoiding it wasn’t a solution, he answered and said, "Mr. Lopez, what’s the matter?"
Gina’s response was brief, "Wait for me after work."
"I have plans tonight, I’m going out to dinner with some friends."
"Then I’ll join you."
"That wouldn’t be appropriate; there will be colleagues from our company, don’t you prefer not to let others know?"
"Anyone going out to dine with you must be in a good relationship with you, and wouldn’t gossip about it."
James rolled his eyes and reluctantly said, "Suit yourself then."
Gina slowed her tone, saying, "James, don’t avoid me. I won’t pressure you, but you have to give us some time to get along."
"Are you really not pressuring me?"
"Mmm, I’ve thought it over, I can’t always be selfish, indeed I need to consider your feelings too. I understand we need time to adjust to each other."
"Since you put it that way, then I’m relieved," James breathed a sigh of relief.
"Mmm, so tell me, your place or mine?"
"This... Let’s go to my place." James felt more comfortable returning to his own home.
Gina quickly agreed.
Since Gina still had some work left, when they left the company building, it was virtually empty. Inside, they didn’t speak to each other, and even after getting into the car, there was no conversation. At that moment, they had to interact as a married couple, which was exceedingly awkward for both.
Driving the car in silence, James reached the residential area and said, "I’ll go buy some groceries."
Gina hurriedly responded, "I’ll come with you."
This was the first time Gina accompanied James to buy groceries; previously at Gina’s place, either James shopped alone or was accompanied by Sandra, while Gina never wasted her time shopping for groceries.
Even though Gina still had a lot of work today, she had decided while at the office that she wanted to accompany James to buy groceries. She wanted James to know that she was trying to be a good wife, easing his emotional burden and nurturing a future together.
The two entered the supermarket, James pushing a cart while Gina walked beside him. After a few steps, Gina took his arm.
This had happened many times before, but this time when Gina held his arm, James’s body stiffened momentarily. Even without turning his head to look, he could sense Gina’s unease from the corner of his eye, even more awkward than when they first pretended to be a couple.
Only the two of them could understand this feeling. To outsiders, they appeared like a loving couple, eliciting envious glances from some men towards James, making him shake his head inwardly. Only he understood how uncomfortable it was being with Gina.
As for grocery shopping, Gina truly had no clue and just watched as James picked a few items, ready to leave quickly.
Gina suddenly said, "Wait, I need to buy something else."
"Okay," James nodded and followed her, but stopped in his tracks when he saw where Gina was headed—it was the women’s lingerie section.
"Come on," Gina pulled on James’s arm.
"Isn’t it unnecessary?"
"What do you mean unnecessary? I used to buy your underwear, can’t you shop with me for a bit now? I’m your... wife now," Gina said, her face blushing as she uttered "wife." Previously, she never minded such words, but now the word "wife" carried more significance.
"Wife..." James muttered to himself inwardly, finding the word strangely frightening.
Gina picked out two sets of lingerie and another nightgown, too embarrassed to have James help choose them. Picking these items in front of James gave her an indescribable feeling.
Finally settling accounts with Gina Lopez, James Brown was about to leave when Gina suddenly stopped and said, "You go back first, I still need to buy some more things."
James didn’t ask further, nodded, and left first. When he got to the elevator in the community, a couple in their forties joined him, both looking anxious as if they were dealing with an urgent matter.
After James entered, he pressed the floor button on the elevator, and upon seeing this, the couple didn’t press any other floor, which surprised James. Maybe they were going to his floor too, which besides him, would only be Linda Campbell and Emily Jenkins. It was certain they were not there for Linda, and most definitely not for him since he didn’t recognize them, so they must be looking for Emily.
He wanted to greet them, but seeing they were not in the mood to talk, James simply nodded his head.
However, looking at the woman, James felt she looked somewhat familiar, as if he had seen her somewhere before, usually those he had relationships with before, but this woman was older and he didn’t remember being with someone her age.
The elevator stopped, and James walked out. The couple followed out but, after checking the door numbers, they surprisingly stopped in front of James’ door.
Now more puzzled, James asked, "Are you looking for me?"
"Do you live here?" both asked puzzledly as the man questioned.
James nodded and said, "Yes, this is my home."
The couple exchanged glances, their expressions shifted, and the man said, "Do you live here alone?"
"Yes," James nodded again.
"How long have you been living here?"
James guessed they were looking for someone who previously lived here and chuckled lightly, "I’ve been here for over half a year."
Expecting disappointment, James was surprised when both faces turned angry. The man grabbed James by the collar while the woman screamed, "Give me back my daughter, give me back my daughter."
Confused by their reaction, James took another look at them and suddenly exclaimed, "Are you relatives of Charlotte Grandy?"
"It is you! Give us back our daughter!" the woman screamed even more agitatedly as she lunged to hit James.
The man roared, his eyes blazing as he swung his hand toward James’ face.
Speechless, James saw their tenacity. It seemed Charlotte had some trouble, but he had nothing to do with it, yet they were demanding him to return her. Now, obviously, he couldn’t just let them beat him without reason. James stepped aside to dodge the man’s fist and subtly shifted to position the man between himself and the woman, preventing her from hitting him.
"Please, calm down. Charlotte Grandy hasn’t been here for a long time, and I haven’t been in contact with her for a while."
The man swung into empty air, and furiously said, "You’re still lying, you said my daughter stayed here for some days, if not for you abducting her, she wouldn’t have disappeared."
Compelled now, James grabbed his wrist sternly, saying, "Although Charlotte stayed here, I didn’t do anything to her, and she isn’t here now."
But the couple was not listening to James’ explanation, insisting tumultuously that he hand over Charlotte, leaving James quite helpless. It would be easy if it were an enemy, but these were Charlotte’s parents. James always considered Charlotte as an immature child and had no ill intentions, not wanting things to get out of hand with her parents.
Just then, the elevator door opened, and Gina Lopez stepped out. Seeing the couple tussling with James, she quickly intervened shouting, "Stop, what are you doing?"
Turning their heads, the couple noticed Gina in professional attire and her imposing demeanor, which made them instinctively stop. The woman seemed to find a sympathetic ear and cried, "This man took our daughter, our daughter is only eighteen, still in high school."
James immediately said, "They are Charlotte Grandy’s parents."
Gina frowned and said, "I think you’ve got it wrong, James has been with me the whole time and wouldn’t kidnap your daughter."
"Who are you to him?" the man immediately asked.
"I...I am his wife." Gina walked over to James and took his arm.
Stunned, the couple could see James with a beautiful and respectable wife like Gina and it seemed unlikely he kidnapped their daughter. Plus, with a couple living there, it seemed less likely anything could happen to their daughter.
"No, he just said he lives alone, you’re lying," Charlotte’s mother suddenly exclaimed.
The man stared at Gina angrily, clearly still disbelieving, and said gruffly, "I don’t care what your relationship is, my daughter is missing, and you both are under suspicion."
