Chapter 311: Chapter 319 Dinner

Lucy Campbell didn’t notice at the time; she was simply focused on how much oil to pour into the pot. When James Brown stopped and put the oil bottle to the side, she didn’t realize just how intimate their moment together had been.

As the oil in the pot started to smoke, Lucy Campbell gripped the cooking spoon tightly in her right hand and asked, "Can I add the celery into the pot now?"

James Brown replied, "Wait a moment, put it in when the oil really heats up."

"Okay, but when is it ’really heated up’? You’ll remind me, right?" Lucy Campbell also picked up the dish containing the celery with her left hand, quite nervously at that.

Seeing how she was holding the dish up high, James Brown eventually stood behind Lucy Campbell and said, "Don’t hold the dish so high; otherwise, when you pour it into the pot, the oil may splash out, and if it splashes onto your face, it could easily cause burns."

"Ah!" Lucy Campbell quickly lowered the dish and asked cautiously, "Is this okay now?"

"Nevermind, let me help you. If you really get burnt and scarred, then the number one beauty of SSUP Country would be ruined by me, and I don’t know how many men would want to kill me for that." Saying so, James Brown had already taken hold of both of Lucy Campbell’s hands from behind.

Lucy Campbell immediately felt more at ease. With a gentle push from James Brown’s left hand, she followed his lead and added the pile of celery into the pot.

"Sizzle..." Although the washed celery had been left aside for a while and didn’t contain much water, it still made a sharp hissing noise when introduced to the hot oil, along with a few specks of oil splashing.

Lucy Campbell was startled and instinctively dodged backward, but she ended up bumping into James Brown’s chest. James Brown, still holding her right hand, said, "Don’t be scared, the more frightened you are, the more likely you’ll get burnt. Now, just stir with a spoon and the oil won’t splash."

Lucy Campbell quickly stirred the celery in the pot with the spoon, and as expected, no oil splashed out. This delighted her, and she swung the spoon back and forth as if a child had received a beloved toy.

After stirring for a while, James Brown instructed, "Now add in the shrimp."

Lucy Campbell promptly added the shrimp to the pot. Soon after stirring, James Brown instructed her to add salt and seasonings. Lucy Campbell, unsure of the amount, needed James Brown’s hands-on guidance for the correct measure of spices.

After Lucy Campbell added the cashews to the pot, James Brown told her to turn off the heat and plate the dish, but fearing that Lucy Campbell might not handle the wok properly and tip it over, he still held onto her hand.

Finally, a dish was completed with Lucy Campbell’s hands. Looking at the tender green celery, pinkish shrimp, and yellow cashews together, she couldn’t help but swallow her saliva, saying, "It looks like it’s definitely delicious."

"Of course, the first dish one makes themselves always feels like a great achievement. Let me have a taste first." James Brown reached out, grabbed a shrimp, and popped it into his mouth. Lucy Campbell immediately turned her head toward him, only to realize that she was leaning into his embrace. As she turned, her face almost touched his.

Lurching her head back instinctively, Lucy Campbell didn’t move away but instead looked at James Brown with a smile and asked, "How is it? Is it edible?"

James Brown smacked his lips a couple of times and shook his head.

"What? Does it not taste good?" Lucy Campbell suddenly became anxious.

Only then did James Brown say, "It’s not that it’s inedible, the taste is also okay, but it’s still not as good as the one I make."

Lucy Campbell’s eyes lit up as she pinched a small piece of celery with her scallion-white fingers, chewed it twice, and nodded with satisfaction, "For a first attempt, it’s not like I have as much experience as you, hehe. But it’s almost as good as yours. I believe that next time, I will definitely get close to this taste."

James Brown laughed heartily and said, "I really look forward to that. Does this mean in the future, I don’t always have to prepare food for you, and I can come to mooch off of you instead?"

Lucy Campbell’s eyes narrowed and she said, "I believe that day won’t be far away."

Just thinking about preparing a table-full of dishes and having James Brown come over to eat after work filled Lucy Campbell with immense happiness.

"Alright, go rest. I’ll handle the rest, or your dish will get cold by the time I finish cooking," James Brown suddenly realized their current pose was too intimate and promptly took a step back.

Lucy Campbell felt a twinge of disappointment but didn’t show it, giving James Brown a radiant smile. She took the plate to the dining table, and as she looked at her first dish, her mind was filled with scenes of cooking together with James Brown.

Being with the person she liked, even just cooking a dish together, was a joy that captivated and enthralled her. If she could spend every day so joyfully cooking with James Brown in the future, she could hardly imagine how blissful that would be.

At this moment, Lucy Campbell’s mind was devoid of country or career concerns; she was simply an ordinary young woman immersed in the joy of love.

After spacing out for a while, Lucy Campbell walked back to the kitchen, stood beside an occupied James Brown with a beaming smile, and said, "This time I won’t help, I’ll just watch you cook."

James Brown had no reason to reject her, and honestly, he didn’t want to. Having a beauty like Lucy Campbell, the number one beauty of SSUP Country, accompany him while cooking was something that would make any man envious.

Watching James Brown cook proficiently, the knife and spoon seemed to come to life in his hands, which enchanted Lucy Campbell even more.

This is a common affliction of a girl in love; in her eyes, everything her lover does is so cool, even the most ordinary things seem so great to her. They have no flaws, everything about them can make her heart flutter, and a woman’s intelligence seems to dip in love. Even Lucy Campbell, SSUP Country’s most intelligent and beautiful woman, becomes a bit foolish at such times.

Finally, the table was set with dishes, and James Brown also opened a bottle of red wine, poured a glass for Lucy Campbell, and one for himself, then raised his glass, saying, "I owe you a lot for this matter, this glass is for you."

Lucy Campbell closed her lips into a smile and said, "Didn’t you say we’re friends? Saying thank you for helping a friend doesn’t quite fit, does it?"

James Brown laughed heartily and said, "You’re right, but having a friend like you, I, James Brown, have indeed struck a great bargain."

Gently swirling her glass, Lucy Campbell said: "Actually, I think I’ve made quite a gain too. With you as a friend, I’ve started living a happy life I had never even thought of before. Let’s toast to that."

The two clinked glasses and then drained their wine in one go. Lucy Campbell picked up her chopsticks and said, "I’ll enjoy this meal even more, as I contributed to it."

James Brown took a bite of the dish Lucy Campbell made and commented, "You really do have a knack for cooking. With some more practice, you could become a good chef too."

Lucy Campbell smiled proudly and said, "Of course, anything I want to do, I’ll do well."

As they ate and drank red wine, the atmosphere was quite romantic. However, after a while, Lucy Campbell suddenly said with a smile, "Don’t you think we’re missing something here?"

"Missing something?" James Brown looked at Lucy Campbell, puzzled.

Swirling her glass of wine leisurely, Lucy Campbell said, "Fine wine, good food, and if we had some candlelight, it would make for a very romantic candlelit dinner."

James Brown laughed and said, "We’re not a couple, why the need for romance?"

Lucy Campbell pouted her lips playfully, transforming her beauty into a different style, yet still too mesmerizing to look at directly, and said, "Who says only couples can have candlelit dinners? Can’t we have one if we’re not a couple?"

"Well... I guess there really isn’t a rule like that."

Lucy Campbell grew more excited and said, "Right? We don’t have anything else going on tonight, so how about we have a candlelit dinner?"

"I don’t have any candles at home. Do you?"

"I don’t have any either, but we can go buy some."

"Go buy now..." James Brown was somewhat speechless, the girl’s thoughts were always so special, "By the time we buy the candles and come back, the food will be cold."

"If it’s cold, we can heat it up, or it wouldn’t be bad to eat them as a late-night snack," insisted Lucy Campbell.

With no other choice, James Brown nodded and said, "Alright, you wait here. I’ll go buy some candles now."

"I’ll go with you, that’s more fun."

They left the house, and after they took the elevator down, two people followed them. Lucy Campbell shook her head, and those two immediately backed away.

James Brown saw those two people too, he knew they were Lucy Campbell’s bodyguards. Knowing she wanted to enjoy freedom and with his presence for protection, the bodyguards were naturally not needed.

After leaving the residence, they went straight to the supermarket and bought candles. However, on their way out, Lucy Campbell pointed to a place not far away excitedly, and said, "Look, they are setting off fireworks over there. Let’s go see."

There were firework displays, likely due to some celebration. YODC City has this tradition; on the night before a wedding, the groom’s family sets off fireworks. The amount signifies the family’s status. Births are also celebrated, notably the child’s first moon, with fireworks. Therefore, there are firework displays in YODC City throughout the year, almost every day. It just depends on if they’re nearby and if you can see them.

Lucy Campbell usually had plenty of opportunities to watch fireworks, but today she seemed extremely thrilled, possibly because people’s reactions differ with their state of mind.

Seeing Lucy Campbell so excited, James Brown didn’t want to disappoint her, and together they went to where the fireworks were set off—it was at the entrance of the neighboring community, with numerous boxes of fireworks displayed. Apart from the massive kinds of fireworks, there were also various types of smaller ones, not as eye-catching but colorfully magnificent.

Lucy Campbell was immediately captivated by these fireworks, pulling James Brown to the front, with the fireworks reflecting a myriad of colors on her face, indescribably enchanting.

Only when the fireworks were over did Lucy Campbell reluctantly pull away, looking back longingly. James Brown also felt that Lucy Campbell, usually so wise, showed a charming childishness at that moment.

But at that moment, James Brown suddenly felt a murderous aura, making his nerves instantly tense. This killing intent was very strong, not something an ordinary thug could emit, definitely from a master, and moreover, one who had taken many lives.
