The Supreme Soldier in the City
Chapter 309 - 317: Achieving Merit

Chapter 309: Chapter 317: Achieving Merit

Lucy Campbell was calm until the next morning before she called Christopher Brown, the Mayor. She wasn’t worried at all that James Brown would run into any trouble overnight; if he couldn’t even handle such a minor scene, he wasn’t the man Lucy Campbell had chosen.

Christopher Brown was quite flattered and even a bit terrified when Lucy Campbell personally visited his office. It was the first time Lucy Campbell had come to his office, and she even mentioned she had something to show him, instructing him to summon Mayor Michael Johnson and Police Chief John Harris.

The three of them waited in the office for Lucy Campbell, all clueless about what she intended to do. But one thing was clear to them: Lucy Campbell was seeking them out for a very important matter, otherwise, she would not have chosen such an occasion.

Upon Lucy’s arrival, the three heavyweights from the city welcomed her in. Lucy smiled faintly and said, "YODC City really does have talents."

Mayor Christopher Brown was startled and hurriedly said, "Miss Johnson, I don’t know who has offended you, but we will definitely handle it seriously."

"Secretary Johnson, you misunderstand me. I’m talking about a policewoman from YODC named Helen Wilson. She went alone to investigate a smuggling syndicate and has gathered plenty of evidence. Here is the evidence; take a look."

Christopher Brown was shocked. He was well aware of the smuggling syndicate in YODC City. Although he wasn’t involved, the syndicate’s protective umbrella was too extensive, affecting many departments in YODC, making him, the Mayor, hesitant to act against it.

Now that Lucy Campbell knew about it and had evidence, he was clear that no matter how powerful the protection racket was, he had to take action.

At that moment, Chief John Harris started sweating profusely. This matter was within his jurisdiction. Although he hadn’t directly taken benefits from William Armstrong, he hadn’t refused the advantages offered by the people related to William Armstrong.

Lucy Campbell knew all too well the machinations of the bureaucracy. She had already read much from the expressions of the three men, but she didn’t expose it. Disrupting the entire YODC wasn’t her intention; her message was clear enough. It was up to them to conduct the investigation and find scapegoats, and she would stay out of it.

Mayor Michael Johnson was particularly frustrated at this time. He was due to retire after this term and didn’t want trouble. He sternly said to John Harris, "Chief N, you must handle this matter immediately. No matter who is involved, we must investigate thoroughly and show no leniency."

John Harris immediately exclaimed, "I will bring all the involved parties to justice, leaving no stone unturned."

Lucy Campbell was involved and he dared not be neglectful.

Lucy Campbell smiled faintly, "In addition to these matters, the Public Security is currently pursuing Helen Wilson and my cousin James Brown. They are both on the run. Perhaps you should also take care of this matter promptly."

Mayor Christopher Brown, Mayor Michael Johnson, and Police Chief John Harris all had extremely unpleasant expressions. Only now did they understand why Lucy Campbell had been particularly interested in this matter. It turned out James Brown was involved, and the most embarrassed was John Harris—the order to capture James Brown had come from the Public Security Bureau, for which he was the Director.

"I know this was reckless behavior from lower ranks. A simple handling from you should suffice. You also know my cousin’s character, his reluctance to use his status. He shares some of the blame for this incident."

After speaking, Lucy Campbell stood up, saying, "Alright, I have other matters to attend to and won’t interrupt your work any longer."

The three men hastily escorted Lucy Campbell out. Once back, they immediately set about arranging various tasks—apprehending William Armstrong, canceling the orders to capture Helen Wilson and James Brown, and directly arresting the deputy captain of the criminal police squad who had issued the order. They then took control of all the involved officers.

Keen to clear their own involvement, John Harris was ruthless this time. He had not let slip any information before the operation. Only when his men arrived at William Armstrong’s house did everyone realize they had come to arrest him.

Helen Wilson had endured a harrowing night, barely closing her eyes. As a police officer whose duty was to arrest criminals, she found it heartbreaking to be running away from the police herself. Where was fairness? Where was justice?

She pondered a lot and came to several realizations. She knew that with her passion and her status as a police officer alone, she couldn’t do everything. She needed power, the capability to mobilize people, and support from higher-up leaders.

The trio woke up early, washed their faces, and left the place, not knowing if someone would come knocking early in the morning. Being trapped at home would not be ideal.

"What do we do now?" Emily Jenkins followed James Brown, gripping his arm and looking around cautiously with her head bowed.

James Brown knocked on Emily’s head, saying, "Could you stop acting like a thief?"

Emily looked at James puzzled, "But we’re wanted now. What if someone recognizes us?"

James laughed, "You still shouldn’t act like a thief. Wouldn’t that make it even more obvious that there’s something wrong with you?"

Emily tilted her head, thought for a moment, then suddenly grinned and proudly said, "I get it now. We need to act like nothing’s wrong. That way, we’ll just be three ordinary people in the eyes of others, and most won’t pay any attention to us."

"At least you’ve got some brains."

"Hee hee, I’m not dumb, you know. I just don’t like to overthink things. Life is too tiring when you think too much about everything."

James actually agreed with what Emily said. He had returned to the city wanting to live a carefree and happy life, but lately, burdened by relationships, he felt genuinely tired. Emily, free of desires and concerns, only thought about how to have fun, which made her happier and more joyful than anyone else.

The three of them found a steamed bun shop, ordered some steamed buns, a bowl of porridge each, along with some pickles. James and Emily enjoyed their meal, though Emily still remarked that it wasn’t as delicious as the food James cooked at home.

But Joan was somewhat distracted, eating only half a bun. The incident had hit her hard.

James didn’t try to console her. A girl like Joan could sometimes be too stubborn, and she had to come to terms with these things by herself. Persuading wouldn’t help if she couldn’t see through it on her own.

After dinner, James Brown turned on his phone, and soon Lucy Campbell’s call came through.

"It’s all been taken care of."

"I’ve troubled you again."

"Heh, you know I was troubled, so you should cook something delicious for me as a reward."

"No problem."

After hanging up the phone, James Brown stretched lazily and said, "It’s all good now, Helen Wilson. Looks like you’re going to be commended for your great achievement again this time."

Helen Wilson had been out of sorts and hadn’t noticed James making the call. Suddenly she looked up and asked, "What did you say?"

James Brown smiled slightly and said, "I said you’re going to be commended again. Turn on your phone."

Helen Wilson was stunned at first, then her face broke into ecstatic joy and she exclaimed, "You mean the issue has been resolved?"

James Brown nodded, and Helen Wilson quickly turned on her phone. A flurry of missed call alerts appeared, the last few all from John Harris, the Chief of T District Police Station.

Helen Wilson hurriedly called back, and the connection was made quickly. Chief Harris asked anxiously, "Little Lin, are you alright now?"

"I’m fine, Chief N, I..."

"I know you have been wronged, and the warrant for your arrest has now been withdrawn. Come straight to T District Police Station. In addition, we’ve already apprehended William Armstrong."

"That’s wonderful," Helen Wilson said, with tears that she could no longer hold back streaming down her face.

"Little Lin, I’m sorry for your hardship. It was my fault, a mistake of our entire police station. Don’t worry, with your great achievement, including the Public Security Bureau leaders, the Mayor, and the City’s Mayor, they all want to meet with you."

Helen Wilson repeatedly said yes and then finally hung up the phone.

James Brown chuckled and said, "Alright, go to the police station. I need to go home and get some good sleep. Sleeping on the floor all night is just too uncomfortable."

At this point, Emily Jenkins suddenly gasped, "Oh no, I thought we might still have to be on the run, and I didn’t even think to deal with my flying schedule. I have a flight today, ah, I’m almost running late."

Helen Wilson quickly said, "Well then, you guys go ahead, I’ll head to the police station." Her demeanor finally relaxed.

James Brown and Emily Jenkins hastily hailed a cab back home, and Emily dragged James to her room while she freshened up and put on make-up, instructing James to help pack her suitcase.

While helping Emily, James didn’t complain, but Emily, that girl, actually had him pack things like bras, underwear, and stockings into the suitcase, which left James somewhat bemused.

This girl really trusts him too much; she doesn’t even care about such private items. However, remembering the day he and Emma Campbell cleaned out many similar items from her room, the girl just giggled, plus the fact that he had already seen her sleeping naked twice, James felt that these sorts of things were no longer a big deal.

Having finally sent Emily off, James then went back home and had a good rest.

Upon arriving at the police station, Helen Wilson was first comforted by Chief Harris, followed by heaps of praise.

"Little Lin, the evidence you’ve gathered is outstanding. We have been wanting to get William Armstrong for a long time, but we lacked solid evidence. Now with this evidence, we can definitely convict him. For the Public Security System of YODC City, you have made a significant contribution."

Helen Wilson then became somewhat shy, saying, "Chief N, I acted too impulsively this time. I should have communicated with T District earlier, and then I wouldn’t have gotten myself into this situation."

"Little Lin, our system lacks someone as courageous and daring as you. The T District’s administration will consider this further. You should be prepared to take on a heavier responsibility," Chief N replied.

Helen Wilson hesitated and then quickly said, "Chief N, this... I don’t think it’s appropriate."

"What’s inappropriate about it?" Chief N smiled warmly at Helen Wilson. Now he didn’t see her as just an ordinary officer, but as someone who was with James Brown and was one of Linda Campbell’s people. Linda Campbell had specifically spoken up for Helen about her situation. All of this implied that Helen’s relationship with James was more than ordinary.

With such an opportunity, how could he not promote Helen? By forming good relations now, he can expect care from both James and Linda in the future.

Of course, Helen didn’t know Chief Harris had such an idea in mind and hesitantly said, "I’ve only been working for a year, and I’m already a station chief. If I get promoted again, wouldn’t it cause a negative impact?"

"If it were a regular promotion, it might not look good, but you’re different. In one year of service, you’ve caught two important fugitives on the national wanted list and cracked a major smuggling case. With these merits alone, no one would object to promoting you further. Moreover, this could serve as an example: those with strong work capabilities will have opportunities for advancement and not just depend on seniority. We need young officers like you right now."

This time, Helen didn’t refuse the offer any longer. She stood up and gave a standard salute, filled with a surge of emotions. Now she could better carry out her revenge.
