Chapter 284: Chapter 291 Coming to Watch the Show
Qian Liben’s brows furrowed immediately. He had already given Helen Wilson enough respect by not pursuing the matter of her hitting James Robinson, but Helen Wilson still seemed oblivious to what was appropriate. His face darkened abruptly and he said, "Helen Wilson, you need to know when to advance and when to retreat. This is our QP Substation, it’s not your turn to be directing things here at our station."
Helen Wilson knew that Qian Liben was angry. She calmed herself down a bit and said, "Deputy Bureau Chief Smith, I may not have the authority to direct things here, but as a police officer, I cannot stand by and watch my colleague engage in torture during interrogation. That’s a violation of the law. For the reputation of our police force, and how the police are seen by the people, I had to step in."
Qian Liben said gravely, "This matter will be handled by the leadership of our Substation."
Helen Wilson still didn’t want to leave, but there was a commotion at the door, and then two people came in. One was a man in his twenties, looking very pleased with himself, and the other was a man in his fifties. Helen Wilson had seen the older man before; he was the Chief of the Substation, Robert Johnson.
The young man was naturally Christopher Taylor. Just yesterday, his boat had been tampered with by James Brown, resulting in a leaky oil tank that left them stranded at sea. It was only after the boat driver called for help that a few other speedboats came to rescue them. Christopher Taylor even had to compensate two speedboats or else they would not have let them leave.
Even if Christopher Taylor was brash, defaulting on a payment was still something he wouldn’t do. After all, he wasn’t some street ruffian. He naturally blamed James Brown for the loss and, upon his return, immediately found Qian Liben and had him arrest James Brown.
Qian Liben had served as the Deputy Director for quite some time and had recently had a chance to advance further, but he needed connections at a higher level. Now that he had linked up with Christopher Taylor, he saw it as the perfect opportunity to climb higher. Therefore, upon Christopher Taylor’s request, he did not hesitate to lead a team to arrest James Brown today.
Christopher Taylor was here specifically to see James Brown. Having been humiliated by James Brown twice, today was finally his chance to get his revenge. How could he miss the opportunity to watch James Brown being taken down a notch and to mock him in person, to vent the anger in his heart?
Due to his status and background, even the Chief of the county station dared not disrespect him. Knowing that he was coming, the Chief had come with him. Even though the case had issues, due to Christopher Taylor’s status, the Chief could only follow Christopher Taylor’s wishes. If Christopher Taylor took offense, he could make life difficult for him—it might not be a demotion, but it would certainly complicate any further advancement.
Christopher Taylor entered the interrogation room with great interest, eager to see James Brown’s pitiful state, but was surprised to find so many people present. Especially seeing James Brown, although handcuffed, nonchalantly smoking a cigarette, made Christopher Taylor’s blood boil.
"Director Smith, why has your interrogation room turned into a marketplace?" Christopher Taylor asked Robert Johnson with a tone laced with sarcasm.
Robert Johnson frowned, just as bewildered as to why there were two Deputy Directors, six or seven officers, and Helen Wilson—a station head being groomed by the city—in the interrogation room. Looking at Qian Liben and Chief W, he asked, "What’s going on here?"
Qian Liben quickly explained, "Mayor Johnson, Director S, here’s what happened. James Robinson and Alan Johnson were interrogating a suspect, then Helen Wilson barged in and even knocked James Robinson unconscious. We came to find out what was going on."
Robert Johnson’s face darkened; he was the Chief of the Substation, after all. Even if Helen Wilson was being groomed by the city, she had no right to cause a ruckus in his Substation. With a stern face, he asked Helen Wilson, "Little Lin, what do you mean by this?"
Standing firm under Robert Johnson’s gaze, Helen Wilson replied with neither arrogance nor timidity, "Director Smith, it was wrong of me to hit someone, but your colleague here was torturing someone during interrogation and also using offensive language, which led to my impulsive action."
Christopher Taylor squinted at Helen Wilson. She looked impressive in her police uniform, catching his eye. He had been with plenty of women, but he had never been with a policewoman before. He said, "This Officer Lin seems quite formidable, actually managed to knock down a man."
James Robinson’s face turned black with embarrassment. Being knocked out by Helen Wilson was a humiliating affair, especially since the remark came from Deputy County Chief Christopher Taylor. Even if he wanted to get angry, there was nowhere to direct it.
Helen Wilson ignored Christopher Taylor’s gaze, which she found repulsive, and focused on James Smith, "Director Smith, I trust you will handle this matter justly. James Brown is my friend. I can remove myself from the situation. As for hitting someone, I am willing to accept punishment."
Now that the situation had escalated, Helen Wilson realized that staying wouldn’t help. She believed that Robert Johnson would not allow James Robinson and the others to act recklessly; otherwise, it would be a blow to his own standing as Chief.
Robert Johnson nodded and responded, "I will communicate with your leadership about this matter. You should go back for now."
Helen Wilson nodded, gave James Brown one last look with a complicated gaze, and finally walked out of the interrogation room.
With Christopher Taylor’s status, he obviously couldn’t pursue Helen Wilson here, but she had certainly made an impression on him. He thought he would have another chance to interact with her in the future; after all, to him, a mere policewoman would be easy to win over.
Looking back at James Brown, Christopher Taylor’s expression darkened again, saying, "It seems the treatment for those arrested by you isn’t bad at all, they can even enjoy a smoke."
Alan Johnson was startled, sensing Christopher Taylor’s dissatisfaction. He quickly stepped forward, reached out to snatch the cigarette from James Brown’s mouth, and barked, "Who allowed you to smoke? Huh?"
Accompanied by a scream, Alan Johnson quickly withdrew his hand and shook it briskly, flicking a cigarette butt away.
Just now, he snatched the cigarette butt from James Brown’s mouth. He didn’t initially grab the lit end, but James Brown turned his head slightly, and the cigarette butt landed in his palm, especially since James Brown took a strong inhale right before blowing, which made the ember flare up even more.
Even if the ember flared up, if Alan Johnson had grabbed it with his fingers, the skin on his fingers is thicker, so it wouldn’t have been a big deal, but it was the palm of his hand, where the skin is not that thick. A spark was enough to cause considerable pain.
Others might not know James Brown, but Christopher Taylor had been bested by him twice, so of course, he knew this was intentional. This made him extremely angry, flashing a dark smile, he said, "Kid, you are still so rampant here. It seems you really don’t know whether you’re alive or dead. Deputy Director Smith, I’ll leave this matter to you."
Qian Liben immediately replied, "Mayor Johnson, rest assured, I’ll handle this thoroughly."
Christopher Taylor chuckled and said, "That’s good then. Go ahead with the interrogation, I’ll be watching here."
Knowing what Christopher Taylor meant, Qian Liben immediately told the remaining officers, "Alright, go back to your duties."
The officers quickly cleared out, leaving only James Robinson and Alan Johnson behind. James Smith hesitated for a moment, then said to Mayor Johnson, "Mayor, I have some matters to attend to, so I won’t accompany you here."
Mayor Johnson knew that James Smith didn’t want to get involved in this messy situation, but he didn’t mind. Qian Liben was easy to use—whatever he said, Qian Liben would do. Besides, James Smith, after all, was a bureau director, not as easy to manipulate. His departure was preferred, and he said smilingly, "Director S, go ahead with your work, I don’t need your attention here."
Robert Johnson left the room, and Chief W also excused himself and left. He disapproved of Mayor Johnson’s approach, but felt powerless and preferred to turn a blind eye.
"Mayor Johnson, what... what are you going to do? You’re the Mayor, you can’t abuse your power like this, you can’t just arrest people at will." James Brown suddenly cried out in fear, a stark contrast to his earlier composure.
Mayor Johnson burst into uproarious laughter. After a few laughs, he scolded, "James Brown, you feel fear now? I’m telling you, I intend to abuse my power, I intend to arrest people at will, because I have the power to do so. Kid, you think you can fight with me? You are really overestimating yourself, ha ha."
"You cannot do this, you are supposed to be the people’s guardian, officials are here to serve the people, I am a taxpayer, you should protect me, not target me."
Mayor Johnson found this even more amusing and said, "Kid, are you an idiot or a fool? Weren’t you all tough before? How come you now remember that I am an official? Also, who told you that being an official is about serving the people? So many people are trying to become officials, spending money, using connections—do you think it’s all for serving the people? Are they fools? And you, a taxpayer who needs my protection—how hilarious. In my eyes, you’re no more than a mere nobody. I decide whether you live or die; if I want you dead, there’s no way for you to live."
The yes-man Qian Liben, along with James Robinson and Alan Johnson, all burst into laughter as well. Qian Liben, eager to show his worth, immediately said, "Kid, do you think you can afford to offend Mayor Johnson?"
James Robinson, who hadn’t managed to teach James Brown a lesson earlier and was even hit by Helen Wilson, was full of fury. Rolling up his sleeves, he declared, "Mayor Johnson, let me take this chance to vent on your behalf today."
Mayor Johnson crossed his legs leisurely and replied, "Go ahead, don’t hold back. If anything happens, I’ll have your back."
Hearing this, James Robinson felt even more confident. He smirked and said, "Mayor Johnson, then I’ll show you something I’ve developed over the years. Let’s start with a ’Turtle Shell’."
"Turtle Shell? What’s that?" Mayor Johnson grew interested.
"Mayor Johnson, let me keep you in suspense for a moment. You’ll see it shortly." As he spoke, James Robinson approached James Brown, his face aglow with excitement. Tormenting a person like this was what he loved most.
The so-called Turtle Shell was to handcuff a person’s hands and feet together, but with the left hand to the right foot, and the right hand to the left foot, so the person could only lie prone, curled up, resembling a turtle. For a short time, it might be bearable, but in just a few minutes, the bound person would be in excruciating pain.
James Brown immediately yelled, "You can’t do this, you’re policemen, you must follow the law."
Mayor Johnson replied with a smug smile, "The law? Let me enlighten you—this law is for nobodies like you, and for us to use. Hurry up and give me a turtle shell to see. Ha ha, you can start by turning this kid into a turtle, and after I’m done with his woman, he’ll really be a cuckold."
"Ha ha..." Qian Liben, James Robinson, and Alan Johnson all laughed loudly. In their eyes, James Brown was just a plaything, and today they were going to have a great time with him.
And just as James Robinson was about to reach James Brown, the interrogation room door was suddenly knocked open again, completely ruining Mayor Johnson’s mood. He turned around to curse, but the words choked in his throat, and his complexion turned extremely ugly.
