Chapter 280: Chapter 287: Home Has Become a Canteen
James Brown was really tired today, he wanted to go to bed early, but Gina Lopez and Emily Lopez showed no signs of leaving. James knew that Lucy Campbell had not woken up and Gina was worried, while Emily seemed to be afraid of Lucy staying here.
Fortunately, Lucy finally woke up, rubbed her eyes and came out. Although she still looked a bit disheveled, she was in good spirits, walked over barefooted and smiled, saying, "Gina... Huh, why are there two of you?"
Gina Lopez quickly explained, "Mr. Smith, I’m Gina, this is my little sister Sandra, she’s my twin."
Lucy responded with an "Oh," and said, "You two really look alike, if I saw Sandra on the street, I would definitely mistake her for you."
Sandra, in front of Lucy, did not dare to be naughty. Gina had told her about some things related to the CEO, which made her involuntarily admire Lucy. Just a while ago, when Lucy was asleep, Sandra could casually chat and joke with James, but now facing Lucy directly, she spoke honestly and said, "Hello Mr. Smith."
Lucy waved her hand and smiled, "Don’t call me that, Sandra. First of all, you are not an employee of my company, and secondly, we are at James’ home. We’re all friends of James, so we are all friends."
Lucy’s approachability immediately made Sandra relax, and she giggled, "Then I’ll call you Sister Lucy."
"Sure, by the way, were you the ones who picked us up? I’m really sorry, I slept the whole way and didn’t even know when you came to pick us up."
Sandra sat next to Lucy, curiously asking, "Sister Lucy, how did you get to know my brother-in-law?"
"Brother-in-law?" Lucy turned to glance at James Brown and Gina Lopez.
Gina hurriedly explained, "Mr. Smith, don’t get the wrong idea, I once asked James to pretend to be my boyfriend to deceive my parents, and this girl just got used to calling him that and hasn’t changed it."
Lucy laughed lightly, "Then it seems there is a chance that the fake act could become real."
Gina blushed deeply and looked at James, but she didn’t refute.
James, now too lazy to explain his relationship with Gina, yawned and said, "Thank you all for today, but I’m really sleepy now. Can I go sleep for a while?"
Lucy stood up and said, "Then you get some rest. Gina, Sandra, if you guys don’t have anything else to do, why don’t you come over to my place to chat? There’s enough room in my home, you’re welcome to stay over."
James’ entire floor, alongside Emily Jenkins’ place, were small, the only larger one belonged to Lucy.
Gina hesitated for a moment, and Sandra immediately excitedly said, "Yes, yes! Getting to chat with a legendary woman like Sister Lucy is something I’ve been longing for."
Gina rushed to say, "Mr. Smith, you’ve had such a hard day, we shouldn’t disturb you."
Lucy laughed again, "It’s fine, I’m not really tired. I was carried by James in the sea, and on the way back, I just slept on his back, so I’m quite spirited now."
Gina and Sandra then followed Lucy out of James’ place, but before leaving, Sandra pouted at James and whispered softly, "Naughty brother-in-law, taking advantage of Sister Lucy."
James rolled his eyes and did not bother to explain. As soon as the three left, he quickly took a quick shower to wash off the seawater, then collapsed onto the bed and fell into a deep sleep.
In the morning, James exercised, took another shower, and was just about to prepare breakfast when a knock sounded on the door. He went straight to open it, expecting Lucy to come over for breakfast.
But when he opened the door, he saw a bunch of people. Not only was Lucy there, but also the Lopez twins Gina and Emily, and even Emily Jenkins was present.
James was stunned for a moment, then Sandra said with a grin, "Brother-in-law, we heard that Sister Lucy always mooches breakfast off of you, so we decided to come mooch too."
Emily Jenkins playfully stuck out her tongue, "Big Brother Brown, you’re really popular, having so many beautiful women wanting to share breakfast with you."
James didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, his house had turned into a canteen now, but he couldn’t send them away. He smiled and said, "Alright, come on in. Though, I will need to go out and buy some stuff, otherwise there won’t be enough for all of you."
James Brown prepared a very lavish breakfast, not because there were four beautiful women present, but because he had exhausted a lot of energy yesterday. After a full night’s sleep, although he had recovered somewhat, without the supply of food, he couldn’t fully recuperate. Thus, the main reason was to prepare for himself.
"So tasty, the food is always the best when Big Brother Brown makes it." Emily Jenkins stuffed an entire soup dumpling into her mouth. Even though the dumplings were store-bought by James Brown, he still got all the credit.
Although Emily Jenkins was beautiful herself and very familiar with James Brown, Grace Lopez and Emily Lopez somehow held no animosity towards her. They didn’t feel even a hint of affection for James Brown from her, just pure friendship.
"Sis, you eat too. If you don’t eat now, there’ll be none left later." Emily Jenkins, while eating, noticed that Gina Lopez wasn’t eating much and immediately enthusiastically offered her a soup dumpling. Ever since she heard Emily Lopez call James Brown brother-in-law, Emily Jenkins started calling Gina Lopez sister as well, trying to ingratiate herself with Gina so she could continue to freeload off of James.
Especially when Emily Jenkins called Gina "sister," she would occasionally give James a mischievous wink as if suggesting she was keeping his relationship with Emma Campbell a secret. This rendered James somewhat speechless, but he thought explanations might not clear things up, so he couldn’t be bothered to explain and let them call her whatever they wished, as it didn’t cost him anything.
Gina Lopez felt a bit awkward, but also a bit proud. She glanced at James Brown and saw his frustrated expression as he kept his head down and focused on eating, which brought her an indescribable joy. "I usually eat very little in the morning. You eat more."
After breakfast, James Brown and Gina Lopez went straight to the office. Lucy Campbell didn’t follow them to the office today but stayed home to rest, while Emily Jenkins went out to have fun.
Upon arriving at the office, James Brown felt everyone’s gaze directed at him. When they realized he had walked in with Gina Lopez, everyone seemed a tad disappointed.
Sensing everyone’s glances, Gina Lopez said somewhat dejectedly, "It seems I’m almost as unpopular as Mr. Smith, seeing their disappointed looks."
James laughed, "Because in everyone’s minds, you are esteemed and high above, while Lucy is seen as an ordinary employee. They probably feel they have more of a chance to get close to her, so they look forward to it so much."
Gina Lopez gave James a sideways glance, asking, "Are you trying to comfort me? But don’t worry, I am quite self-aware. I know I still have some ways to go compared to Mr. Smith." Then she added meaningfully, "And your gap with her is even wider."
James smiled lightly, his words also laced with double meaning, "I’m aware. I never hold unrealistic expectations. The gap in status is too large; even if we could be together, it wouldn’t last."
Glancing around to see no one nearby, Gina suddenly stretched out her foot and gave James a kick, her eyes glaring as she said, "Stop pretending to be of low status here. You’re the president of this company, a level above me. Even if you weren’t the president, you’re still the manager of HR, not much less than me."
James rubbed his nose and said, "It looks like later on, I might as well become a junior staff member."
"You... later on I’ll make you a security guard, let you guard the gate."
James said with a grin, "That wouldn’t be too bad, right. I could see all the beautiful women of our company every day. That’s much better than staying in HR where no beauties come to my office."
Gina was not irked this time and said leisurely, "Your idea is not bad. I’ll think about it."
Just as she finished speaking, someone else walked over. Gina Lopez didn’t say anything more to James and headed straight upstairs, while James turned toward his own office on the fourth floor.
He had barely sat down in his office for a moment when a commotion came from the hallway, followed by the door being burst open, and four police officers rushed in.
"James Brown, you are now suspected of an intentional assault crime. This is our arrest warrant." One police officer swiftly unfurled an arrest warrant while the other three crowded around and cuffed James.
James didn’t resist, knowing full well that it must be Christopher Taylor’s doing, and this fellow wasn’t just some ordinary thug. Resorting to openly using police to make the arrest meant that official procedures would be followed, and if James were to resist the police now, it would only give the appearance of attacking an officer. He didn’t want to make a scene, so he obediently let the officers handcuff him.
"What’s going on? Comrade Officer, you must be mistaken."
As James was being led out of the office, Sarah Utah had already rushed over, blocking the police officers and loudly protesting. This girl, usually gentle, was remarkably courageous when it came to serious matters, as evidenced by her being the first to stand up in support of James during China Yiyuan Company’s previous incident.
"Please step aside, do not obstruct us carrying out our duties," the police officer said sternly, all business.
"You must be wrong; Big Brother Brown couldn’t be a criminal," Sarah insisted, standing firmly in their way.
Other employees of the company also began to murmur in support. To them, as an amiable HR manager, James Brown was well-liked. Speaking up for him now was not a big deal, and it was a chance for them to do him a favor.
