Chapter 268: Chapter 275: Sandra’s Interrogation

James Brown and Helen Wilson were sitting in a big truck, with a driver at the wheel, while the two of them squeezed into the adjacent seat. The truck was already on the highway by now, speeding smoothly.

At this moment, Helen Wilson could hardly believe that they had managed to transport the goods out so safely and smoothly. She had expected the other side to have many people and a very strict inspection.

In fact, this was Helen Wilson’s first real encounter with smuggling. Although smuggling involved extensive connections, when it comes down to it, it’s still a business. Those engaged in business can’t be as extremely cautious as those trafficking drugs or arms; after all, getting caught for those could lead to execution, while being caught for smuggling would at most result in a few years behind bars.

Moreover, what matters most to smuggling rings is the initial vetting. James Brown and Helen Wilson’s thorough preparation in the early stages had lessened their vigilance, allowing this deal to go through.

But Helen Wilson wasn’t particularly thrilled. Although they now had some evidence of smuggling, these pieces of evidence couldn’t really do much— at most, they could arrest Uncle James Collins, but capturing only him would be akin to startling the snake in the grass, and they would never get an opportunity like this to arrest the others involved.

The driver responsible for transporting the goods was clearly one of the group themselves, so at this moment, Helen Wilson still had to continue the act with James Brown, coquettishly discussing what she wanted him to buy for her with the money they earned, and where they would go for fun.

The driver was an experienced hand, likely used to driving through the night. After several hours, he only stopped to eat a little with James Brown and her, then continued driving. By this point, Helen Wilson was feeling tired, plus it would seem unnatural for her not to sleep, so she dozed off resting on James Brown’s lap.

James Brown chatted casually with the driver, attempting to pry some information out of him, but the driver was very sly and tight-lipped. Insisting he was just a driver, he professed ignorance about anything else, and eventually, James Brown had to give up. Asking too much would give himself away, so he decided to shut his eyes and get some sleep as well.

At dawn the next day, the truck finally reached its destination. James Brown arranged to offload the goods into a small warehouse, and then the big truck left.

"Is this place yours?" Helen Wilson asked, looking at James Brown with confusion.

James Brown laughed: "I don’t have any storage space; this was lent to me by a friend."

"What friend?"

"A friend is just a friend. You don’t need to worry about it. Leave the rest to me."

A twitch appeared at the corner of Helen Wilson’s mouth; she didn’t want to deal with the goods herself, but urgently needed the funds to lure the big fish above, so she kept silent.

At this point, James Brown wrapped his arms around Helen Wilson from behind, saying with a grin, "Shouldn’t you be fulfilling your promise to me now?"

Helen Wilson suddenly jerked James Brown’s hand off, turning around and staring at him, asking, "What promise did I make to you?"

Steadily meeting Helen Wilson’s gaze, James Brown said, "Didn’t you promise to compensate me after the job today?"

"Ah!" Helen Wilson gasped, her cheeks flushing, and she retorted: "Nothing dangerous happened today; why should I compensate you?"

"You..." James Brown suddenly bulged his eyes, staring frustratedly at Helen Wilson.

With a sly giggle, Helen Wilson added, "When we face danger next time, I will definitely compensate you. Alright, the next bit is up to you. I need to rush back to work."

After saying that, she pushed open the door and strode out. By the time James Brown followed her out, he saw Helen Wilson running off full tilt, practically fleeing, which made James Brown laugh heartily. This female cop, she’s really something else.

After two days of hassle, by the time James Brown returned to YODC City, it was Monday. He had not found the time to discuss things properly with Emma Campbell over the weekend. Or perhaps, James Brown now felt somewhat apprehensive about facing Emma Campbell, deliberately letting the weekend slip by before returning to YODC City.

Helen Wilson had not forgotten to call him these past two days, making sure she was well-informed about the situation and knowing that James Brown had managed to offload the goods smoothly, having about Seventy Thousand Dollars in his possession now.

Earning so much from just one job made Helen Wilson’s jaw drop, and she understood that this was the profit James Brown made after selling the goods directly to a middleman. If the goods were sold slowly, the profit would undoubtedly be much larger.

Before returning, James Brown had contacted Uncle to tell him he had completely sold off the goods and wished to acquire another batch. But James Collins told James Brown that there were no goods available at the moment and that he would contact him when the next shipment arrived.

This was exactly what Helen Wilson had hoped for. To crack this case, she needed to know everything about the other side, including their smuggling routes, distribution channels, key personnel, etc. Such details couldn’t be uncovered from just one or two deals. She needed several transactions to earn their trust and prove herself as a strong business partner so they would open up access to higher-ups.

Helen Wilson had put aside her police work these days, taking a break to resume her regular duties.

James Brown went to Gina Lopez’s house on Monday evening. Gina and Emily had been on the phone constantly over the past couple of days, showing great concern for him. It was fine for Gina, but Emily had been waiting for James to talk about the matter, and if James didn’t show up, she would have come to drag him over herself.

"Brother-in-law, you’re finally here, I missed you so much." As soon as James arrived, Emily rushed over and excitedly grabbed his arm.

Gina had come back with James, and with groceries in hand, she passed them to Emily, saying, "Take the groceries to the kitchen."

Emily didn’t take them, still holding onto James’s arm, she said, "Hey, I’m talking to my brother-in-law, can’t you carry them yourself?"

Gina glared at her and said, "I haven’t changed my shoes yet, hurry up."

Reluctantly, Emily let go of James’s arm and took the groceries, but immediately said with a giggling smile, "Brother-in-law, you have to tell me everything properly today, just stay over tonight."

As James changed his shoes, he laughed and said, "I can tell you, but I’d rather not stay over."

"Giggle, you’ve stayed over with my sister so many times, one more night won’t hurt."

Gina’s face instantly blushed, reminding her of the night she spent with James. Before, they could cohabitate without issues, but now she wasn’t sure if James could remain as honest as he had been in the past.

At the very least, Gina knew that if she were to be alone with James, as long as he didn’t actually do ’that,’ she didn’t mind other intimate gestures. In fact, she seemed to enjoy the feeling, and these past few nights she went to bed reminiscing about their closeness, feeling quite restless.

Emily sneakily watched Gina’s reaction, seeing her older sister’s shy face, she couldn’t help but chuckle secretly. Her proud big sister was becoming less and less immune to James Brown. Just a little more effort, and how could there be any difficulty in making good things happen?

Entering the living room, Gina faced James and felt inexplicably awkward, saying, "You sit for a while, I’ll go change my clothes," before running into the bedroom and loudly closing the door.

In the meantime, Emily walked out of the kitchen, sat next to James, and once again grabbed his arm, urging him, "Brother-in-law, quickly tell me what happened these past few days. My older sis came back and didn’t talk about the thrilling experience with you, it was so dull."

James knew that Gina was private and wouldn’t disclose that to avoid suspicions; they had to pretend to be intimate, not to mention that their performance turned out quite passionate.

"Hehe..." Emily winked at James and teasingly said, "Tell me, brother-in-law, did you manage to win over my sister?"

James suddenly appeared perplexed and said, "Nothing happened."

"Giggle, don’t lie to me. The next day my sister came back, she was absolutely smitten. If it wasn’t with you..." Emily gestured her thumbs and winked with an even more ambiguous expression.

James laughed awkwardly and said, "It was nothing, your sister and I are innocent." But deep down he felt rather guilty. After what had happened, claiming innocence was a bit far-fetched; still, since they had not fully consummated their relationship, he felt the need to clarify somewhat.

Gina hastily changed her clothes and came out hurriedly, well-aware of how mischievous her little sister could be. Leaving her alone with James might lead to who knows what.

Indeed, just as she got to the door, she heard James trying to explain himself, so she quickly came out, her face stern, saying, "Emily Lopez, what nonsense are you spouting now?"

Emily blinked innocently and said, "I’m not talking nonsense. I’m just asking how far things have gone between you and brother-in-law. If there’s no progress yet, then I might take matters into my own hands. Don’t blame your little sister for not caring about sibling affection. I can’t let such a good brother-in-law slip away."

Gina, initially worried that James would spill about that day, suddenly changed her mind. She sat down next to James, grabbing his arm, and even purposefully rubbed his arm against her chest. She lifted her chin proudly at Emily and said, "You want to know, do you? Well, let me tell you, that night, your brother-in-law and I did sleep together. We did everything we were supposed to do and not supposed to do."

"Really?" Emily’s eyes widened.

"Of course, it’s true. There were even cameras monitoring us. We had to make it look real to avoid suspicion."

Just as James was about to object, Gina discreetly pinched the soft flesh inside his arm, as if to say that if he dared to speak out of turn, she would pinch even harder.

"No way, big sis, you are too fierce. To do such things with brother-in-law under someone else’s watch, oh my God, I can’t even imagine."

Emily’s exclamation turned Gina’s face beet red. She wished she could find a hole to crawl into.
