Chapter 265: Chapter 271 Different

"Emma, I’m currently involved in something very important, and I’m with Officer Emily Wilson today."

James Brown held Emma Campbell softly as they walked toward the school, explaining to her what had happened during the day.

Emma nestled close to James, having long since stopped worrying about John Smith, and now, hearing James explain, her small grievances disappeared like smoke in thin air. In a voice filled with guilt, she said, "Big Brother Brown, it’s my fault, I shouldn’t have doubted you. When I saw you dressed like that, I should have realized you were busy working, and I even bothered you. Did I cause any trouble for you all?"

James suddenly felt an immense guilt rise within him and involuntarily sighed.

Emma was startled and said anxiously, "Big Brother Brown, did I actually mess things up for you?"

Then, James realized that he had led Emma to misunderstand. He quickly smiled and said, "No, you covered it up well, and I showed up just in time to save you. That guy shouldn’t suspect that we’re the same person."

"Then why did you sigh?" Emma was still not quite convinced.

James gently tightened his embrace and said softly, "Emma, I should have come to see you sooner so you wouldn’t have been frightened. It’s my fault for being late."

Emma immediately showed a comforting smile, saying, "It’s okay, he just grabbed my arm."

"Hmm, that’s good then. Emma, I’m going to be quite busy these next few days, and I’m afraid I won’t have much time to spend with you."

Emma smiled sweetly, saying, "You’re doing important work. We’ll have plenty of time later, focus on your tasks first."

"Yeah, once I finish up this matter, I’ll spend a few good days with you."

"Alright, I’ll head back to school now." At this point, they had reached the school’s entrance. Emma was reluctant to leave James, but considerately prepared to depart.

James caught her hand, saying, "Just like that, you’re leaving?"

Meeting James’s gaze, Emma instantly understood what he meant. Her cheeks flushed, and she looked stealthily around. Seeing a few students, none of whom she recognized, she impulsively stood on tiptoe and kissed James on the cheek. Then, she looked at him with a mix of shyness and joy, clearly waiting for his response.

Of course, James wouldn’t let Emma be disappointed. He bowed his head and gently kissed her delicate lips, whispering, "If it weren’t for the pressing matters today, I really wouldn’t want you going back to school."

Emma blushed profoundly, but her eyes carried a deep excitement, looking forward to the day she could truly be with James. She gently bit her lip and said, "Just make sure, when you finish your task, it doesn’t coincidentally happen when I’m... you know."

James burst into laughter. The normally shy Emma had made such a playful remark. He kissed her cheek again and whispered in her ear, "Don’t worry, I’ll definitely pick the right day this time."

Emma’s legs felt weak, her whole body drained of strength as thoughts of that time filled her with warmth. Blushing, she pushed James away, saying, "Then you better calculate it right," before briskly running into the school.

James didn’t chase after her but stood at the entrance watching Emma. After running about twenty meters, she turned around to look at him, then waved, turned the corner, and disappeared from his sight.

Today, having seen Emma, James realized that John Smith had feelings for her. Thus, after leaving with Officer Monaghan, he secretly followed Emma. He knew when she came to his place but didn’t approach her until he saw her entering the public bus to school, and only then did he feel reassured.

But suddenly seeing John Smith hail a taxi to chase after the bus, James could hardly feel at ease and intended to chase after them too. Yet, just at that moment, there were no taxis available, so he was left waiting.

Emily Wilson was still at the hotel waiting for James, as they were scheduled to ship goods tomorrow. To be safe, neither of them went home.

Seeing James Brown come back, Joan Wilson immediately asked, "Was there any problem?"

James Brown retold the incident and concluded, "I think this way, John Smith won’t associate Emma Campbell with me. Plus, that guy is just a middleman. Now that I’ve taken all his commission, he dares not talk nonsense. If the deal goes south, and they demand money from him, he won’t be able to pay."

"You really are vicious," Joan chuckled lightly, quite satisfied with what James had done, then apologized to him, "I’m truly sorry, almost caused a misunderstanding between you and your girlfriend."

"It’s okay, we’ve talked it out. Besides, Emma isn’t the type to hold grudges. It was just that she saw it suddenly and couldn’t accept it at the time, which is normal. Didn’t you see how cooperative she was then?"

Joan nodded and said, "Emma is really a nice girl, you better treat her well. If you wrong her, I won’t let you off."

James Brown looked humorously at Joan and said, "You’re not even Emma’s relative, why are you meddling?"

Joan glared and said, "Indeed, I’m not anyone to Emma, but we are both women. Emma is such a fragile and gentle girl. If you don’t cherish her, you’re no better than an animal. How can I not call you out?"

"Okay, okay, you have the right to critique me, but there’s no need to curse at me like that. Besides, I haven’t wronged Emma yet." As he said this, James Brown suddenly felt somewhat guilty. Physically, he was still involved with Sunny Nguyen and Melody Yoody, and emotionally, his relationship with Melody Yoody was ambiguous. If this wasn’t wrongdoing, what was?

"Look at you, even saying these words makes you feel guilty. Do I need to say more?" Joan would have rolled her eyes to the back of her head if not for her ears blocking the way, then she glanced again at James and softened her tone, "James Brown, after all we are friends. I’m giving you a piece of advice. I don’t care what you were like before, but now you’ve admitted Emma is your girlfriend, you should cut ties with those ambiguous past relationships. Don’t think that it’s not a sin for a man to be flirtatious. It not only harms those women but ultimately, you will suffer too."

James Brown knew Joan was right, but hearing this from her still surprised him, and he said, "You speak clearly, could it be that you have a rich experience in relationships?"

Joan rolled her eyes at James and said, "Don’t you know whether I’ve been in a relationship before?"

"How would I know whether you have been in a relationship or not, I didn’t know you before."

Joan glared and said, "You... when you kissed me, didn’t you feel it? When we slept together, didn’t you feel it either?"

James Brown quickly responded, "Big sister, we need to clarify this. When we slept together, we just shared a bed, it doesn’t imply anything else."

"Humph, you are scared I might cling to you? You think too highly of yourself. Just relax, I’m not interested in you. Now clarify the earlier matter, did you actually feel it or not?"

James Brown hurriedly said, "I felt it, I was just joking with you."

"Humph!" Joan grumpily hummed, "Alright, enough talking. I’m going to take a shower."

James Brown playfully said, "So, should we shower together?"

"Wash your own head!" Joan cursed and quickly entered the bathroom, then with a thud, she closed the sliding door.

After both had freshened up, they ended up lying on the same bed again. Today, there were no cameras watching them, so they didn’t need to act like last time to be watched by others. However, because they were excessively affectionate that day.

Neither of them spoke. James Brown could fall asleep at the drop of a hat, a habit he’d developed over many years. Maintaining sufficient energy and strength during missions was crucial, and sleep was indispensable. So, he fell asleep after a short while.

However, Joan couldn’t sleep at all. Firstly, they were going to truly pick up the shipment tomorrow, allowing her to better understand the operations of this smuggling group. Secondly, lying next to a big man like James Brown left her unsure what to think about—she even thought about the events of the other night.

Since Joan had also fully matured into a woman and though she hadn’t dated, it didn’t mean she wasn’t longing for such intimacy. Pretending to be affectionate like with James Brown still stirred her suppressed desires. Listening to James Brown’s breathing, she felt a burning desire inside, daydreaming far more than intended.
