Chapter 220 - 221: Beating Someone in the Police Station
Chapter 220: Chapter 221: Beating Someone in the Police Station
"All right, you guys can leave; I won’t pursue this matter any further." Director John found an excuse to back down at this moment. Even if he didn’t know James Brown’s identity, the wisest choice was still to avoid provoking trouble.
When Emily Jenkins saw James Brown’s words subdue Director John, her courage swelled, and she stood up straight, loudly saying, "We can leave, but they’ve beaten someone up. Are you saying that won’t be dealt with?"
James Brown’s impression of Emily Jenkins improved. This flight attendant truly didn’t fear authority; under such circumstances, she was still insistent on holding the other party accountable. If it were anyone else, they’d probably have just turned and left by now.
Director John’s brow instantly furrowed deeply. Wasn’t this making things difficult for him? James Brown’s background was a mystery, and he didn’t dare act rashly. Meanwhile, Joseph Smith was the son of T District Public Security Bureau’s Deputy Director John Smith. Offending him would mean trouble down the line.
However, Joseph Smith clearly lacked Director John’s vision and was still not taking James Brown seriously. Laughing, he said, "Little sister sure is brave. I’m not afraid to tell you, my dad is the Deputy Director of the Public Security Bureau. The bureau is practically run like our family’s business. Do you think if I beat someone up, it’d be handled?"
Emily Jenkins grew even angrier and retorted, "So what if he’s the Deputy Director of the Public Security Bureau? Even if he’s the Director’s son, if he beats someone, he still has to take responsibility. The kind of person I despise most is someone like you, relying on your dad’s bit of clout, acting as though you’re so remarkable. What skills do you possess? Can you do business, or can you work to earn money? Social parasites, trash!"
Joseph Smith’s face turned red from Emily Jenkins’s words. Normally very arrogant, but in reality devoid of any real talents – especially in the face of a beautiful woman looking down on him – it drove him even madder, and with a livid face, he said, "So I beat someone up; what can you do about it? Now I’ll give you a chance. Hurry up and apologize to me, then come give me a kiss, otherwise I’ll have you all detained."
Joseph Smith actually uttered such words inside the police station. Not only was Emily Jenkins furious, Emma Campbell was also shaking with rage.
"Haha, now you two have two choices. One, this beauty, no wait, both these beauties have to give me a kiss, and I’ll let you go. The second option, wait for detention."
"Slap, slap!" Suddenly, two crisp slaps rang out, and Joseph Smith’s body spun around twice before he steadied himself. Stars swirled in his eyes, he couldn’t see clearly where he was, and his face hadn’t yet registered the pain, for it had already turned numb from the blows.
The movements happened so quickly that no one expected James Brown to make a move. The entire corridor fell silent, staring blankly at James Brown and Joseph Smith. Emma Campbell and Emily Jenkins both had their eyes wide open, feeling vindicated but also worried. To hit someone in the police station, and to top it off, the son of the T District Public Security Bureau’s Deputy Director – it looked like this was a big mess.
"You... you..." As the numbness on Joseph Smith’s face subsided and the pain set in, he finally realized he had been hit. He had always been the one delivering blows, never on the receiving end. A mix of grievance and pain surged through him, and with watery eyes, tears began to flow as he pointed at James Brown, stammering without getting words out.
At this moment, Director John’s heart sank. James Brown didn’t seem like an impulsive person, and now knowing full well Joseph Smith’s identity, he still dared to strike. Clearly, he didn’t regard the latter’s status highly, and such a person was even more trouble to provoke. He was just a spectator caught in the crossfire between greater powers.
"Motherfucker! You dare to hit me; I’m not letting this go!" Finally regaining his senses, this being his first time slapped, Joseph Smith swore loudly, lunging towards James Brown. The two others with him, familiar with Joseph’s behavior, joined in the fray without considering that they were in a police station.
This left Director John utterly frustrated. To dare to fight in the police station, not just James Brown but Joseph Smith as well – they both utterly disregarded him. And because they disregarded him, he was helpless.
Emily Jenkins and Emma Campbell screamed in fright, but James Brown remained standing there, calmly and quickly kicked out his right foot. The three assailants approached quickly but left just as fast, and as they rolled away, they looked as clumsy as tumbling gourds.
Though James Brown didn’t use much force, it was enough to deal with these three lads. After they stopped, they were whining and took quite a while to get up.
Several police officers looked at each other, dumbfounded. Fighting in the police station was a complete disregard for their presence. Normally, they would’ve been up in arms, but today, with even the precinct chief not saying much, they could only stand to the side, motionless.
"Chris Smith, do you no longer care about your job? I’ve been hit, and you still haven’t arrested this punk!" Joseph Smith hadn’t seen Director John step in yet and was livid, his face turning green. He had always treated the police station as his own home, and now he’d been hit in his own ’house’ while his ’family’ hadn’t stood up for him. How could he not be furious? Now, in his anger, he directly called out Director John’s name.
Director Chris Smith knew that regardless of the situation, he had to step in. Even if James Brown had a strong background, aside from anything else, hitting someone in the police station was a definitive breach of the law. If he intervened to stop it, he would undoubtedly stand on solid ground. So he immediately addressed James Brown, saying, "Do you realize that hitting someone here is completely illegal?"
James Brown smiled faintly and replied, "Of course I know that. But it seems like you haven’t been enforcing the law properly either, so why should I be afraid of you?"
Chris Smith was immediately choked up, but Joseph Smith was the child of a supervising leader. If Chris Smith didn’t stand up for him, and John Smith, the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau, bore a grudge against him, it wouldn’t just be a question of promotion—he might be fully ousted from his position. So, he had no choice but to steel himself and say, "You keep talking about the law to me, but you actually hit someone inside the police station—that’s a blatant disdain for the law, and I have the right to stop you."
"Didn’t you see that he wanted to hit me too?" James Brown pointed at Joseph Smith, who was trying to get up.
"You’re both responsible. Now, go inside and make a statement," Chris Smith said, still somewhat calculating. He didn’t dare to be too harsh, but taking a statement left him an out.
James Brown replied carefreely, "Sure, as long as you’re fair, I’ll definitely cooperate with you."
"Cut the crap and get inside!" Chris Smith had long been angered by James Brown’s verbal jabs and couldn’t help but speak sharply.
The two policemen hadn’t figured out the situation yet. Seeing that Director John wanted James Brown to make a statement, which meant arresting him first, and knowing Joseph Smith’s identity, they wanted to ingratiate themselves with Joseph Smith. They rushed to James Brown and pushed him aggressively, saying fiercely, "Behave yourself, or don’t blame me for not being polite."
James Brown sidestepped, and the two policemen pushed at thin air, nearly losing their balance and falling, which was an embarrassment. One of them raised his hand to slap James Brown across the face, cursing, "Behave yourself, did you hear?"
James Brown grabbed the policeman’s wrist and said to Chris Smith, "Director John, if I defend myself now, will you accuse me of assaulting an officer? If I don’t defend myself, are you going to let them beat me up?"
Chris Smith’s mouth twitched, and he shouted, "What are you doing? I told you to make a statement, why are you throwing punches? Do you want trouble?"
The two policemen were stunned, completely confused about what was going on today. It wasn’t typical behavior for their Director John to show such concern, especially when this guy had hit the son of the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau. Nevertheless, since Director John had spoken, they reluctantly withdrew their hands.
As the policemen backed off, James Brown also let go, but the policeman immediately felt a burning pain in his wrist. Looking down, he saw a circle of bruising and tightened up, realizing that such a simple grip could cause this much pain meant tremendous strength. It dawned on him that James Brown was undoubtedly a dangerous man. As a lowly officer, he really couldn’t afford to provoke him.
James Brown was holding Emma Campbell in one hand and Emily Jenkins in the other as they headed to the room they had come out of. At the doorway, James Brown turned to Chris Smith and asked, "You’re not going to let them leave while we’re making a statement, are you?"
Chris Smith snorted and said, "I will enforce the law impartially. Take care of yourself."
James Brown ignored Director John and led the two women inside.
In the corridor, Joseph Smith was bellowing loudly, "Director John, you better take good care of him. Damn it, he dared to hit me, he really doesn’t know whether he’s alive or dead."
Chris Smith frowned and said, "Joseph, you should be careful with this. This guy, I feel he’s not simple."
"Not simple? Are you joking? In YODC City, I don’t believe there’s anyone I need to be afraid of!" Joseph Smith didn’t take Chris Smith’s words seriously at all. He was only fixated on the fact that he had been hit.
"Joseph, right now, I don’t know his background. If we blindly deal with him and it causes trouble later, even Mr. Shaw won’t be pleased."
Joseph Smith glared and said, "On your turf, I got hit. Will my dad be pleased? Hmph, this is going to be the talk of the town—a deputy director’s son was hit in a police station and then nothing could be done to the perpetrator. It seems, Director John, you really don’t want to help. Fine, then I’ll call my mom first."
Joseph Smith was taken aback. John Smith’s wife was known throughout the whole Public Security System in YODC City as a tough woman. Relying on her husband’s power, she was always commanding and condescending within the Public Security System, bossing around the staff at lower-level branches. Although everyone resented this woman internally, out of respect for John Smith, no one dared to not give her face.
If this woman came here to make a scene, Chris Smith would indeed have a headache.
