Chapter 203 Joy
Chapter 203: Chapter 203 Joy
With Sarah Grandy there, James Brown and Emma Campbell didn’t get the chance to be intimate that night, having slept on the sofa. The next morning, James had to visit Helen Wilson after breakfast. He then said to Emma, "Emma, I’ll be busy during the day and won’t be able to spend time with you."
Emma smiled sweetly and responded, "That’s okay, you go ahead with your stuff. I have things to do at school in the afternoon, so I’ll head back early too."
"Do you need me to take you there now?"
"No need, I’ll clean up at home in the morning and will leave after cooking lunch for Charlotte."
James nodded and said, "Alright then, oh, by the way, do you have enough money?"
Emma suddenly looked a bit embarrassed, and James immediately said, "Silly girl, if you’re running short, just let me know. You’re my girlfriend, not some stranger."
Holding the hem of her clothes, Emma said with a sense of guilt, "Big Brother Brown, I’m really sorry. I went home a few days ago and gave most of the money you gave me to my dad."
James patted Emma on the shoulder and said, "What’s there to be sorry about? But did your dad gamble again?"
"I’m not too sure. It seems like he’s been quite honest recently. He didn’t ask me for money this time, but our house was out of rice and flour, so I just..."
James chuckled and said, "You’re so filial. I should praise you. After all, he’s your father, the man who gave you life. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have met such a great girlfriend. It’s only right to give him some money."
Charlotte, with her hands on her cheeks, glanced at James, then at Emma, and with a moved expression offered, "Uncle, you’re really too kind, so gentle with your girlfriend."
Although Emma was feeling quite guilty initially, Charlotte’s words made her a bit embarrassed.
James wrapped his arm around Emma’s shoulder, gave her a peck on the face, and then let her go. He took out One Thousand Bucks from his wallet and handed it to Emma, saying, "Don’t ever let yourself suffer. Though Big Brother Brown isn’t a millionaire, supporting the two of us is not a problem."
Emma bit her lip and took the money, her eyes reddening a bit as she said, "Big Brother Brown, I will definitely work hard to earn money too."
"Silly girl, we’re family, there’s no ’you’ and ’me.’ Anyway, I should get going."
Charlotte ran up to James and said with a giggly tone, "Uncle, I’m also out of money."
"What’s your lack of money got to do with me?" James replied with a glare.
Charlotte instantly pouted and said, "Am I not your mistress? Aren’t you even going to give me some spending money?"
James rolled his eyes and pulled out Fourteen dollars to Charlotte, glaring as he said, "Spend it wisely."
Charlotte said discontentedly, "Your main wife gets One Thousand Bucks, and the mistress only gets Fourteen dollars, and I have to spend it wisely at that, how unfair."
"Do you want it or not? If not, give it back to me," James retorted with another glare.
"Of course, I do! Why wouldn’t I?" Charlotte quickly stashed the money in her pocket and bolted, afraid James might take it back.
James left the house and headed to Helen Wilson’s place, who was already neatly prepared and waiting for him at her house. They discussed some more, and then left together in James’ car. First, they stopped at the supermarket to buy loads of gifts before finally arriving at Helen’s parents’ house.
Helen’s parents didn’t live in YODC City but in P City, which was over two hundred kilometers away. Driving there took James a little over two hours.
The closer they got to the house, the more nervous Helen became. With a troubled expression, she asked James, "Can we really pull this off?"
James replied helplessly, "If you think we can’t, then we should head back early, rather than losing face in front of your parents."
"How can we go back?" exclaimed Helen, then violently shook her head, asserting, "We have to make it happen no matter what."
"Then just be natural."
"I feel that even if we were truly in such a relationship, suddenly going back to tell my parents we’re getting married would still make me nervous, right?"
James looked at Helen and smiled, "Looks like you’re getting smarter now."
"Am I usually dumb?" Helen retorted, not in the best of moods, but inside she was truly anxious. If they couldn’t make it happen, they wouldn’t be able to continue investigating the case.
Helen Wilson’s home was in an older neighborhood, but the environment was not bad. James Brown parked the car, and, carrying big and small bags with Helen Wilson, finally arrived at her home’s doorstep.
At the doorstep, Helen Wilson took a deep breath and exchanged a glance with James Brown before knocking on the door.
Seeing her like this, James Brown couldn’t help but think of Gina Lopez. It seemed that when he first went home with Gina Lopez, her expression and actions were almost the same.
Just after a couple of knocks, the door flung open, and a couple around fifty years old stood at the door. After taking a glance at Helen Wilson, they turned their gaze uniformly toward James Brown.
Helen Wilson immediately said with a blushing face: "Mom and Dad, we’re back."
James Brown also promptly and politely said: "Hello, Uncle and Auntie."
Helen Wilson’s father grunted and turned back inside while her mother sized up James Brown and then smiled, saying, "Good, good, come in quickly, come in."
Last night, Helen Wilson had called her parents to tell them about her and James Brown, which greatly surprised them. They hadn’t even heard about their daughter dating someone, and now all of a sudden, it was time to talk about marriage. This was something they found hard to accept.
However, after seeing James Brown, Helen Wilson’s mother thought the young man looked tall and robust, with a good-looking face, and she was quite impressed with the first impression, so her displeasure had already dissipated by a large extent.
Once inside, Helen Wilson’s mother invited James Brown to sit down. James Brown hurriedly said politely: "Uncle and Auntie, I’m really sorry for not telling you about the things between Joanne and me until now. It is entirely my fault. I’m here specifically to apologize. If you have any displeasure, feel free to scold or berate me. I just hope you won’t blame Joanne."
James Brown’s opening remarks had a good effect. Helen Wilson’s father looked at him and showed a hint of approval in his eyes. He was a police officer, and although he was just an ordinary officer over the years, he was straightforward in character. James Brown’s willingness to take responsibility was quite to his liking.
James Brown had learned this from Helen Wilson, so he catered to his preference, and indeed, this move significantly improved the impression.
Helen Wilson’s mother immediately said: "What’s this about beating and scolding? That’s too severe. But Auntie still has to say a few words. Since Little Rachel and you are in a relationship, you should have come to see us earlier. Now, you are about to get a marriage certificate and only then do you visit us. This really makes us a bit unhappy."
James Brown nodded repeatedly, looking more guilty as he said: "Joanne and I also wanted to visit you sooner, but the company where I work has just started, and the work is indeed very busy. Of course, being busy with work is not an excuse. The main issue is that we haven’t spent much time together, and we weren’t in a hurry, which is our primary mistake."
Helen Wilson’s mother laughed and said: "It’s fine, it’s fine. Now that you are here, it’s good. Little Lee, this is a lifetime matter. Auntie has some questions to ask you. You don’t mind, do you?"
James Brown hurriedly replied: "Not at all, Auntie. Please feel free to ask."
"Who is in your family?"
"It’s just me. My parents passed away years ago."
"Oh, so you’re on your own?"
"Yes!"
"Where do you work?"
"I work at a company founded by Jessica Smith. The company has just started, but the investment is substantial – five hundred million. It will definitely become one of the most significant companies in YODC City in the future. I’m the head of the HR department. In this period, we have recruited over three hundred people; I’m in charge of that, so work has been busy."
Helen Wilson’s mother nodded, quite satisfied with the job. She then asked: "Do you have a house now?"
James Brown replied, somewhat embarrassed: "Uncle and Auntie, my current income is not very high, just over ten thousand a month. I can’t afford a house yet, but I’m planning to make a down payment on a bigger house by the end of the year. This should not be a big problem."
At this point, Helen Wilson’s father snorted and said: "Talking about marriage now seems a bit early to me. Young people should spend more time dating to avoid problems later on."
Seeing her father’s objections, Helen Wilson hurriedly said: "Dad, James and I have been together for a long time. We both feel we are a good match."
Helen Wilson’s father glared and retorted: "What do you understand? When young people are in love, they only see each other’s strengths. Over time, weaknesses will come to the surface, so it’s better to spend more time together before deciding."
Helen Wilson was really getting anxious at this point; she knew her father had absolute authority at home, and if he didn’t approve, the matter would surely fall through. She steeled herself and said: "Dad, Mom, the reason James and I are in such a hurry to get married is... because I... I’m pregnant."
"What? Pregnant?" Helen Wilson’s parents suddenly widened their eyes and yelled at her in shock.
James Brown almost collapsed. This matter had not been discussed beforehand. Helen Wilson was really making things up. Feeling Helen Wilson’s parents’ eyes turning towards him, James Brown had no choice but to stiffly chuckle and say: "Yes... we were too careless."
This time, Helen Wilson seemed a bit shy yet also somewhat happy, caressing her belly, and said: "Mom and Dad, James and I have decided to keep the baby. We can’t let this child be born without a normal family, so... we’re getting married now."
