Chapter 153: Chapter 153 Perplexed
Sunny Nguyen quickly arrived at the six-story office building of J Corporation. Although the company’s building wasn’t as imposing as those high-rise office buildings, having such an independent office building was proof of strength.
Upon reaching the general manager’s office and seeing Gina Lopez sitting there, with James Brown also sitting leisurely on the sofa, she knew Gina had truly signed with the company.
Gina said with a grin, "Sister Sunny, please have a seat."
Sunny immediately asked, "Why are there only the two of you? Where are the other people in the company?"
Gina shrugged her shoulders and said, "Aside from a few security guards downstairs, there are just the three of us employees in the entire company."
Sunny was stunned for a moment, then her eyes lit up, and she excitedly said, "Does that mean, this company is to be established by just the three of us?"
Gina nodded and said equally excited, "Exactly, that’s what I mean."
James looked at the expressions of the two women and was somewhat speechless. It was hard work, yet these two were so excited. Women can really be troublesome when they get competitive.
"But... with just the three of us, is the funding in place?" As the financial director, this was her primary concern.
Gina handed a bag of items to Sunny and said, "Here are the company’s bank accounts and other documents. Right now, we should have a little over four hundred and fifty million." Linda Campbell had invested five hundred million, and the company’s building cost about fifty million, so there was just over four hundred and fifty million in the account.
Sunny’s eyes widened and she exclaimed, "Four hundred and fifty million... and it was invested all at once..." As a financial director, Sunny was naturally aware of how investments usually operate—they’re typically incremental. This kind of one-time investment was usually smaller. To have five hundred million invested all at once was not unheard of, but aside from state-owned enterprises, it was extremely rare.
"Yes, Miss Johnson trusts us a lot. We have full control over the finances. We only need to report if it exceeds fourteen dollars; besides that, there’s no need to ask for permission. We can just decide directly."
Sunny’s face became even more colorful. Having to report only for amounts exceeding fourteen dollars essentially meant they hardly ever had to do so. They could split expenditures over fourteen dollars into two parts to avoid reporting, which made things very easy for her. It meant they could spend the four hundred and fifty million however they wanted.
"Miss Johnson really trusts us, isn’t afraid we’ll embezzle this money," Sunny suddenly shook her head.
Gina smiled slightly, "So that’s why I need your help, Sister Sunny. If it were someone else, I wouldn’t be able to trust them."
Sunny grinned bitterly and said, "Four hundred and fifty million... even in the original head company, the biggest investment was just over a hundred million. Now you’re letting me manage this much money directly; I’m really scared I won’t be able to control myself and will embezzle. No, no, I need to go wash my face immediately to clear my head."
Gina burst into laughter at that. She hit it off with Sunny at first sight and trusted her work ethic and character very much. That was mainly because Sunny, like her, worked hard to prove her ideas when it came to work.
And now, the company’s generous offer meant they didn’t need to steal money anymore.
"Sister Sunny, I’ll make you another contract later. Right now, I have something to tell you," Gina said, pausing deliberately and glancing over at James.
Sunny, following Gina’s gaze toward James, asked curiously, "What is it?"
"What do you guess is James’s position in this company?" Gina asked, feeling a touch of frustration inside, but her mood improved when she asked Sunny.
"Which position?" Sunny was puzzled, not understanding why Gina was asking her this.
"Take a guess. If you get it right, I will be really impressed," Gina’s smile grew wider.
Now genuinely intrigued, Sunny looked at James’s frustrated face and said with a chuckle, "You’re not making him the doorman, are you?"
A vein popped on James’s forehead, and Gina couldn’t help but laugh, saying, "No, that’s not it."
"Then he must be cleaning the bathrooms."
James felt black lines fall all over his head as Gina laughed gleefully, then looked at James mischievously. The guy didn’t want to be the CEO, so if he were made to clean the bathrooms, she wondered what kind of face he would pull.
"No way, what else could make him this frustrated?" Sunny couldn’t guess. In a company, these seemed like the least prestigious jobs.
Seeing Sunny at a loss, Gina said beamingly, "James Brown is now... the CEO... of our company."
"CEO?" Sunny Nguyen said in confusion, "What exactly does a CEO do?"
Grace Lopez was stunned, her mouth twitching as she said, "Sister Sunny, you can’t not know what a CEO is, can you? It’s a level above general manager, like my position."
"What?" Sunny Nguyen suddenly stood up, then burst into laughter, falling onto the sofa and doubling over with mirth. "Gina... you’ve got to be kidding me. Him, a CEO... haha... then I must be the chairman."
"Sister Sunny, I’m serious," Grace Lopez shrugged and said, "This guy was personally appointed CEO by Miss Johnson."
Seeing that Grace Lopez wasn’t joking, Sunny Nguyen’s laughter stopped, and she stared at them, stammering, "What do you mean by that?"
"What I mean, I’m not even sure anymore. You should interrogate this guy thoroughly when you have the chance," Grace Lopez shrugged helplessly again.
Sunny Nguyen turned her gaze to James Brown and asked, "Are you really a CEO?"
James Brown gave a wry smile and said, "I guess so."
Sunny Nguyen slapped her forehead and said, "You’re not some super-rich playboy coming here to toy with life, are you?"
James Brown gave Sunny Nguyen a look and said, "Can you not fantasize like that?"
"Then how did you become a CEO? Could it be that Miss Johnson has taken a liking to you?"
"Can’t you women think normally for once? Linda Campbell is a big deal. That just can’t be. Let’s drop the subject, thinking about it depresses me. I’m going out for a smoke."
As James Brown stepped outside, Sunny Nguyen couldn’t wait to hear the story. Grace Lopez recounted the event, leaving Sunny Nguyen dumbstruck and speechless for a long while.
"Sister Sunny, I feel there’s something odd about this. Someone like Lucy Campbell wouldn’t need to come to a small city like YODC City to open a branch. And even if she came here, she wouldn’t need to personally invest so much and even start a company called J Corporation. I get the feeling Lucy Campbell came here just for James Brown."
"Then James Brown must really be quite charming."
Worriedly, Grace Lopez said, "Sister Sunny, aren’t you concerned? If Lucy Campbell does have designs on him, then James Brown will definitely accept. What will you do?"
Sunny Nguyen revealed a radiant smile and said, "That’s nothing to me. I never had serious plans with James Brown; it’s just you who keeps thinking it’s going that way. If he really gets together with Lucy Campbell, I’d actually be happy for him."
Seeing how nonchalant Sunny Nguyen was, Grace Lopez felt relieved and said, "Well, that’s good then. I won’t worry for you."
"You never needed to worry about me in the first place. But why do I get the sense that you’re a bit concerned now?" Sunny Nguyen winked at Grace Lopez.
"Concerned about what? My sister had figured it out already. I’ve talked it over with her, and she agreed to deal with our parents together. That matter is already settled."
"Oh, I’m aware of that, but what I meant was... you seem quite attentive to James Brown lately. You haven’t developed feelings for him over time, have you?"
Grace Lopez’s face darkened as she said, "How could that be possible?"
"Why not? Even Lucy Campbell might be interested in him. If you were, it wouldn’t be something to be ashamed of, right?"
"I..." Grace Lopez found herself at a loss for words. Whether in appearance, talent, or background, she just couldn’t compare to Lucy Campbell. If Lucy Campbell really was interested in James Brown, and she wasn’t, it would seem like a lack of discernment.
Confused, Grace Lopez looked at Sunny Nguyen and said, "Do you think James Brown is that outstanding? I haven’t noticed."
Sunny Nguyen chuckled and said, "Whether he’s outstanding or not, I really couldn’t say. Normally he just seems carefree. The only thing between him and me is our bedroom encounters. You’re with James Brown all the time. You should understand him better than I do."
Grace Lopez blushed at Sunny Nguyen’s words but still instinctively reflected on it. She realized that James Brown was indeed quite remarkable; even her sister Grace Lopez didn’t think much of most men, yet she still spoke highly of James Brown, even knowing that he was a fake brother-in-law.
But then Grace Lopez shook her head. Regardless of how outstanding James Brown was, it had nothing to do with her. Her main focus was on her career; she wouldn’t even consider a relationship. However, she thought she should warn her sister Emily Lopez. By the look of it, Emily was quite interested in this fake brother-in-law. If that girl really fell for James Brown, she’d definitely go after him without second thoughts.
The very thought of Emily Lopez bringing James Brown home to meet their parents made Grace Lopez’s scalp tingle...
