Chapter 135: Chapter 135 This Bastard Did It on Purpose

"Alright, I’m leaving," James Brown patted Sarah Grandy’s hand after resolving the issue, wanting to leave with Emily Lopez as soon as possible.

"Mr. Brown, take care," Brother Bob immediately stepped aside, showing utmost respect to James Brown.

"Uncle, I’m coming with you," Sarah Grandy said, no longer just gripping James’s arm but now hugging it tightly.

James frowned slightly and said, "Aren’t you going to play with your classmates?"

"I’m not playing. I’m coming home with you to be your mistress," Sarah Grandy declared with pride, even shooting a challenging glance at her classmates as though being James’s mistress was an incredibly honorable thing.

James also glanced at those classmates; the male classmates did not look pleased, but the female classmates, to his disbelief, all showed looks of envy. James thought to himself, not knowing whether to be speechless or amused by how crazy the world had gotten and wondering if all young girls were like this nowadays.

James glared and said, "What nonsense—are you trying to get me killed? Can’t you see I’ve brought my girlfriend?"

"No worries, she can be your wife, and I’ll just be the mistress," Sarah Grandy quickly retorted, then, eager to appease Emily Lopez, said, "Sis, I won’t get in your way. I’ll just be the mistress. Men are all fickle anyway. Even if there’s a beautiful wife at home, they still think about picking wildflowers. So, think of me as helping you out. You can’t manage alone. When the time comes, I’ll lend you a hand."

At this moment, everyone in the bar felt as though thunder was rolling above their heads, and even Brother Bob had a look of disbelief; this young girl’s brazen desire to openly request to be someone’s mistress was too much for even this hardened underworld player.

James had no choice but to admit defeat. Just as he was about to distance himself from Sarah Grandy and escape, several police officers suddenly burst in through the door, and one of them was Helen Wilson, which made James’s forehead crease with black lines. Seeing this scene, Helen was probably going to look down on him again.

"What’s going on here?" As soon as Helen Wilson entered, she could tell there had been a fight and sternly began to inquire. Her gaze quickly landed on Brother Bob, which caused her frown to deepen. As the newly appointed Deputy Director, she knew that Brother Bob was the biggest gang leader in the area and nothing but a constant thorn in her side that she couldn’t get rid of.

But Brother Bob, usually so full of bluster, now appeared rather cautious, unconcerned by the police presence but visually checking out another person. Helen too was curious and looked at the same person, wondering who could be so significant that even Brother Bob treated with such deference.

To her surprise, she could hardly believe her eyes when she saw it was that scoundrel, James Brown.

How could this guy be here and command such respect from Brother Bob?

She first thought she must have mistaken him for someone else, but almost immediately realized that couldn’t be right. Brother Bob was not someone who would act so cautiously around strangers. Could it be that James Brown was a true mafia boss, someone even more terrifying than Brother Bob?

The moment she entertained that thought, Helen Wilson’s heart skipped a beat, thinking James had hidden his true identity very well.

Helen had encountered James twice in recent days, once thinking of him as a conman who preyed on women’s wealth, and another time as a deep cover gang leader. In the meantime, there had been an occasion when she treated him like he was entirely inconsequential. In her mind, James was no good guy; even if he did some good deeds, it was surely just to cover his true nature.

Helen Wilson didn’t realize why she had such a strong prejudice against James. As a police officer, she was supposed to prioritize evidence, but whenever James Brown was involved, she invariably approached the situation with preconceived notions and only considered evidence after the fact.

"Officer Wilson, what brings you here?" James greeted her with a beaming smile.

Helen Wilson wore a stern expression and asked, "What exactly happened here?"

The bar owner quickly approached and said, "Nothing, nothing, there was just a little scuffle earlier, but it’s all settled now."

"And who called the police?" Helen Wilson looked around at the crowd.

Emily Lopez stepped forward and said, "Officer Wilson, we meet again. You’re a good cop, arriving so quickly. I was the one who called the police. I thought there might be a conflict, but it ended up just being a kids’ scuffle."

"A kids’ scuffle?" Helen Wilson looked around at the scene again. Several teenagers dressed untidily, two with bruised faces, and about seven or eight gangsters who looked like they had been in a fight. She roughly guessed what had transpired.

Such conflicts didn’t cause any trouble, and the police couldn’t be bothered to intervene. Still, seeing Brother Bob and James Brown both present made Helen Wilson feel puzzled. What were these two doing here?

"Director Lewis, we have nothing to do with this matter, we’ll be leaving now," Brother Bob said. Although he didn’t take a newly appointed junior director like Helen Wilson seriously, he had to maintain appearances, so his demeanor was very polite.

Helen Wilson really wanted to keep Brother Bob there, but she had no reason to do so. She also didn’t want to startle the snake out of the grass. If she were to deal with Brother Bob, she would need to gather enough evidence to strike a lethal blow and not give him any chance to counterattack.

So at this moment, she just nodded at Brother Bob, letting him and his two bodyguards leave.

James Brown also smiled at Helen Wilson and said, "Officer Monaghan, we will be going now."

Helen Wilson frowned. She wanted to keep James Brown there and have a serious chat, but she ultimately held back. With a heavy heart, she watched James Brown walk past her, Emily Lopez arm in arm with James, said with a grin to Helen Wilson as they passed by, "Officer Lopez, let’s chat another time when we’re free."

Sarah Grandy also wanted to leave with James Brown, but suddenly, James turned to Helen Wilson and said, "Officer Monaghan, this young lady was involved in the incident just now, you can’t let her go."

Helen Wilson rolled her eyes. James was clearly using her as a shield again. However, she couldn’t just ignore the situation and sternly told Sarah Grandy, "You’re not going anywhere."

Sarah Grandy quickly became frantic and shouted, "Uncle, you can’t just abandon me, I’m your mistress."

But James had already walked out with Emily, disappearing from sight in an instant, which infuriated Sarah to the point of stamping her feet.

Helen Wilson was sweating bullets. James was truly a scoundrel, not sparing even such a young girl, and the girl was even sillier, admitting she was James’s mistress. It was just shameful.

"Be quiet and tell me what happened just now," Helen Wilson commanded Sarah Grandy, and began to inquire about the recent events.

Sarah was a quick-witted girl, and she recounted the incident without omitting any details. Helen Wilson didn’t care much about the minutiae, knowing it was just a small incident. The most important thing was that the students were unharmed. If their parents didn’t press charges, the matter would end there.

But when Helen Wilson heard that the thugs not only beat people up but also attempted to take Sarah Grandy with them, she frowned deeply. This was a serious issue, and she asked, "And then?"

"Hehe, I knew my uncle was here, so what was there to be afraid of? I just called for him, and then he came over and knocked those thugs down. Uncle is so cool, he floored them all with just a couple of punches and kicks."

Hearing Sarah speak like this, Helen Wilson was surprised. She had sparred with James before. That time, when she had mistaken him for a thief and they’d struggled for a while, neither had managed to subdue the other. She knew her own strength well; handling one thug would be fine, dealing with two would be challenging, and facing seven or eight – and moreover, knocking them down – would be simply impossible.

"Are you sure James Brown knocked them all down by himself?" Helen Wilson pressed on.

"Of course, so many people saw it, ask them if you don’t believe me."

Helen Wilson immediately asked a few other people, including two of the thugs. Everyone’s responses were strikingly consistent: James Brown had indeed knocked them all down by himself, and decisively so.

"Is this guy really that formidable?" Helen Wilson thought to herself, sensing that James had kept many things from her. At the very least, he had deceived her with his martial arts skills. Especially recalling when she tried to arrest him, how he resisted and embraced her, taking advantage of her, which she hadn’t minded at the time believing she had the wrong person. But considering now that he was so capable, he could have easily overpowered her without all the trouble.

It seemed there were only two reasons for James to act that way. First, he didn’t want to reveal his abilities, which meant he might have a deeper background, possibly even more dangerous than Brother Bob, some sort of a boss in the underworld. Second, he pretended to be weak on purpose, just to take advantage of her.

Thinking of the second reason made Helen Wilson’s skin crawl as if ants were marching over her. She felt a disgust she couldn’t articulate.

"That bastard, daring to deceive me, I’ll see how I deal with him," Helen Wilson swore in her heart. Regardless of which speculation was true, it was clear that James Brown was no good, and her impression of him worsened considerably. She resolved that sooner or later she would expose his true face and ultimately bring him to justice.
