Chapter 147: The Inescapable Call of Death
Chapter 147: Chapter 147: The Inescapable Call of Death
"Your Highness, you mustn’t!"
The Roaring Sky Dog hastily cried out, recognizing the Soul-Calling Bell as an ominous object capable of summoning ghosts for assistance, but it could also devour the reason in one’s heart, ultimately transforming them into ghostly beings.
Qin Jun, however, would not heed its warning and directly rang the Soul-Calling Bell. The bewitching sound of the bell left the people behind the high walls of the night market in a daze, standing transfixed in their places.
Right after, two figures rose from the ground in front of Qin Jun, one black and one white, brimming with a ghastly aura—it was none other than the Black and White Impermanence.
"Your Highness, move back!"
The Roaring Sky Dog hurriedly stood in front of Qin Jun, feeling the oppressive aura emanating from the Black and White Impermanence that made its scalp tingle.
It cursed inwardly at the damned good luck of His Highness, whose single invocation had summoned a Ghost King—an entity not even a cultivator of the Golden Elixir Realm like Qin Jun could control.
"Greetings, Your Highness!"
The Black and White Impermanence bowed with a sinister smile—not that they were scheming against Qin Jun, but simply that was their appearance.
The Roaring Sky Dog was stunned, as the ghosts summoned by the Soul-Calling Bell were usually disrespectful to their summoner and even brazen, especially the Ghost Kings. Yet, it had not expected that the two Ghost Kings before them, which made even its own fur stand on end, would actually submit to Qin Jun.
"Someone just tried to assassinate me and left me injured. Relying on a special method, they’ve escaped ten miles away. Track them down for me and, while you’re at it, wipe out the forces behind them!"
Qin Jun spoke with a heavy voice, his near-death experience leaving him both furious and ashamed, determined to teach his assailant a painful lesson.
"No problem!"
Black Impermanence coldly chuckled and, along with White Impermanence, they submerged into the ground once more. They did not even inquire about the appearance of the assailant, clearly possessing a special method to track them, being the notorious soul-fetching envoys of the mortal world.
After their departure, the Roaring Sky Dog couldn’t help but ask, "Your Highness, how did you acquire the Soul-Calling Bell?"
"Naturally, they gave it to me. They are called Black and White Impermanence and serve as the Ghost Gods of the netherworld." Qin Jun said with a smile, causing the Roaring Sky Dog’s eyes to widen in shock.
The Roaring Sky Dog was so stunned that it didn’t know what to say for a long while.
The Ghost Gods of the netherworld had been subdued by Qin Jun?
It couldn’t help but feel like it was in the midst of an implausible tale. Was this all just a dream?
...
In another region of Luoyan City, a man in black struggled to reach a mansion, on whose plaque the words "Divine Sword Hall" were boldly inscribed.
Divine Sword Hall had branches in every city of the Nanzhuo Dynasty, intended to convey the Emperor’s will and handle affairs promptly.
The Hidden Dragon Martial Arts Competition was also held jointly by each city’s Divine Sword Hall.
The man in black knocked on the gate, which was quickly opened for him. He pulled down his black hood, revealing a pale, bloodless face of an ordinary-looking man in his thirties.
"Senior Brother Nie, what happened to you?" The disciple who opened the door cried out in alarm.
The man known as Senior Brother Nie smiled bitterly, "Keep your voice down, and take me to the Third Elder quickly!"
"Alright..."
The disciple hastily helped Senior Brother Nie inside, glancing left and right outside before closing the gate.
About three minutes later, the two arrived in the main hall of the branch, where an elderly man was sitting cross-legged, suspended in the air practicing his cultivation. Spiritual energy swirled around him like a tornado, unseen yet potent, with an oppressive aura.
"Third Elder, I have failed my mission!"
Senior Brother Nie half-knelt on the ground and cupped his fists, spitting out a mouthful of blood in the process. His whole body collapsed to the floor, his bones shattered, and it was a wonder that he had managed to hold on for this long.
Upon completing his report, he could no longer bear the pain.
The man known as the Third Elder opened his eyes. His hair was sparse and white, his gray robe fluttered in the air, and upon seeing Senior Brother Nie’s pitiful state, he narrowed his eyes.
"You may leave now!" The Third Elder instructed the disciple who had opened the door for Senior Brother Nie, who quickly departed nervously.
Only after the disciple had left the hall did the Third Elder ask, "What happened, how did you get so badly injured? Weren’t you sent to kill Qin Jun?"
Senior Brother Nie possessed the cultivation of a ninth-level Ascending Mortal Realm, making it a simple task to kill a cultivator of the Golden Elixir Realm.
"Qin Jun has a black dog under his command. It’s a demonic king that broke all my bones with a single slam. Had it not been for my body cultivation, I would be a dead man by now." Senior Brother Nie grimaced from the ground, maintaining his frame with a force of spiritual energy, but now that the energy had dissipated, he lay paralyzed, unable to even stand up.
"A demonic king..." The Third Elder muttered to himself.
"Hehehe—"
Suddenly, a chilling laugh echoed through the hall, startling the Third Elder, who quickly scanned the surroundings. Aside from themselves, there was no third person in the hall.
"Who dares intrude into the Divine Sword Hall!" the Third Elder bellowed with authority, his aura of a ninth-level Transforming Void Realm exploding forth, rousing all the disciples in the mansion from their meditations or sleep, who then converged towards the main hall.
"Ahh—"
Suddenly, Senior Brother Nie screamed as a pallid, skeletal hand emerged from the ground, clamping down on his throat with a deathly grip. The scene was morbid and fearsome. With a snap, the Third Elder could not react in time before Senior Brother Nie’s throat was crushed, a sight that raised goosebumps on the Third Elder.
He had never witnessed such a bizarre scene, and worst of all, he was unable to sense the presence of the enemy.
The Black and White Impermanence were Ghost Gods; how could they possibly be detected by a cultivator of lesser cultivation?
Clank, clank, clank—
A chain suddenly emerged from the darkness behind the Third Elder. Just as he prepared to turn around, the chain wrapped around his neck. He instinctively tried to break free but couldn’t budge the chain.
The Soul-locking Chain was a treasure of the artifact realm; how could he possibly break it?
An unprecedented terror burgeoned within the Third Elder’s heart. He suddenly felt a chill at his ear, and upon glancing, he was almost terrified to death. Black Impermanence was lurking behind him, its blood-red tongue licking his ear, those eyes, like those of a fiend, staring him down as if blood would flow from the sockets at any moment.
Qin Jun, who had seen countless horror movies, was himself frightened for a good while before calming down, let alone the Third Elder.
"Who... in the end...?"
The Third Elder asked with difficulty, his right hand flipping over to reveal a green dagger that appeared out of thin air.
Pffch!
Before the Third Elder could make a move, he felt his abdomen being pierced, the excruciating pain distorting his face. However, restrained by the Soul-locking Chain, he could only utter a muffled squeak.
Without notice, White Impermanence had appeared before him, its right hand already piercing his gut, blood inexorably pouring out. As he looked into White Impermanence’s malicious smile, the Third Elder’s eyes were filled with despair and pain.
"You’ve offended someone you should have never crossed, and even if you fall into hell, you will never achieve detachment!"
Black Impermanence whispered into the Third Elder’s ear, his voice as cold as ice. He then proceeded to lick the Third Elder’s face with his long tongue.
A commotion of messy footsteps approached rapidly. A group of Divine Sword Hall disciples burst into the room, stunned and horrified by the sight of the Black and White Impermanence subduing the Third Elder.
