Chapter 995: Chapter 56 The Greeks’ Gift_3

The two Italians who had just taken their seats looked up at Arthur. The stout one instinctively put his hand into his pocket, while the fair-skinned one raised his hand to restrain his companion.

The two exchanged a glance but ultimately remained silent, casting their eyes towards Adolphe Nourri, who was sitting opposite.

Nourri stared at this unexpected visitor, unable to determine his identity for a moment.

At the Waai’er Restaurant, unfamiliar faces were not only foreign tourists; many were foreign spies.

However, the reason Nourri dared to meet his two sensitive friends here was because it was located in the city center of Paris. He did not believe that spies from Austria would dare to make a move in such a bustling area.

Nourri restrained his smile and tried to dismiss the unwelcome intruder: "Sorry, you might have mistaken me for someone else."

Arthur had already guessed that Nourri would probably say this. He pretended to be disappointed and turned to Dumas, saying, "Alexander, you’ve got the wrong person; this is not Mr. Nuli."

"Alexander?"

Nourri looked up at the dining table not far ahead and immediately spotted Great Dumas, who was chatting with Heine. He paused in surprise, "Mr. Zhongma?"

Seeing that he couldn’t hide any longer, Great Dumas had no choice but to walk over, take off his hat, and greet, "Good afternoon, Mr. Nuli."

The originally silent two Italians saw Great Dumas and enthusiastically stood up to greet him: "Mr. Zhongma, good afternoon."

Before Great Dumas could speak, Arthur had already taken the lead, testing the waters. He shook hands with the Italians and whispered, "May I ask if you are Mazzini and Garibaldi? I heard Alexander mention you before. Paris is not safe now, please take care."

Great Dumas did not expect Arthur to play this card. The tactics of an old Scotland Yard spy were far more cunning than he had imagined.

Arthur first tricked him into coming to weaken Mazzini and the others’ psychological defenses, then didn’t wait for him to speak, but instead rushed forward into the city with dynamite.

The Frenchman was anxious to explain, but the unsuspecting Mazzini and Garibaldi had already acknowledged their identities.

"Thank you for your concern, but our situation hasn’t reached a dead end yet. The French Government no longer offers the semi-public protection to ’Young Italy’ as before, but it hasn’t directly apprehended us as Austria and the Kingdom of Sardinia demanded."

As these words were spoken, Great Dumas had his words forcibly stuck in his throat.

If at this point, Great Dumas clarified Arthur’s identity to Mazzini and Garibaldi, it would only make them suspect he was in cahoots with this British spy. Besides, even if one were to reason with them, it had to wait until Arthur had left. After all, probably no one in this world understood better than Great Dumas how many ulterior motives this retired Scotland Yard officer had.

Arthur’s lips curled slightly upward as he first patted Great Dumas on the shoulder, speaking somewhat reproachfully, "Alexander, you should have introduced them to me earlier."

Great Dumas, upon hearing this, looked as if he had swallowed a fly. He pulled out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat off his cheeks, silently praying: "Trojans, do not accept gifts from the Greeks."

Arthur saw Great Dumas’s expression and knew what was going on in the fat man’s mind.

Yet he surprised Great Dumas by being open and sincere, introducing himself to each of them and handing out his business card: "Let me reintroduce myself: Arthur Hastings, Second-class Secretary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Embassy to the Kingdom of Hanover, also involved in publishing."
