The Shadow of Great Britain -
Chapter 134 - 134 93 The King of Tower Hamlets
134: Chapter 93 The King of Tower Hamlets 134: Chapter 93 The King of Tower Hamlets London, Westminster.
The sun rose slowly over Trafalgar Square.
At number 4 Whitehall, in the interrogation room of the Greater London Police Department headquarters.
Mr.
Disraeli looked up at the light streaming through the iron bars and leaned back in his chair, exhausted, as he spoke.
“Officer, you’ve been questioning me all night, when will this end?
How many times must I say it?
I was making an election speech at Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park yesterday afternoon, but I left in the evening, and I really didn’t see anyone hanged in the Maple Forest behind!”
Sitting across from Disraeli was the equally weary Charles Field.
He dozed with his hand propping up his face and his eyes half-open.
In a daze, he began to speak, “Mr.
Disraeli, we believe in your personal honor.
You had no social connection to the deceased, so we believe you are certainly innocent.
But it was necessary to bring you in for questioning.
You were unlucky, because it was Wednesday, and there were very few people speaking in Hyde Park.
Yesterday afternoon, you were the only one speaking.
Had it been Sunday afternoon, we would have found more witnesses.
But now, I’m sorry, we can only turn to you.
Please think carefully, did you notice any details while you were speaking yesterday afternoon?”
Disraeli became indignant at Field’s words, retorting, “Haven’t I told you already?
I noticed nothing.
And why am I the only eyewitness?
I clearly told you that when I left Hyde Park yesterday, I saw a gentleman moving with his three servants.
The gentleman last seen at 36 Lancaster Gate even went missing, he had the perfect opportunity to commit the crime.
If you suspect anyone, it should be him!
Why drag me into this?”
Upon hearing this, Officer Field simply smirked and shook his head, “Mr.
Disraeli, I advise you to be cautious in matters like this.
And it’s not that we haven’t sought him; he should be on his way to the Greater London Police Department right now.”
“You found him?” Upon hearing this, Disraeli’s spirit perked up, “Can I see him when he arrives?”
Field responded as he poured himself half a cup of tea from the pot on the table, “You want to see him?
No, that’s not possible.”
Disraeli furrowed his brow, “What’s the matter?
Are you worried that I’ll coordinate our stories?”
Field blew on his steaming cup of tea, “No, I’m not worried about that.”
“Then what are you worried about?”
After taking a sip of his tea and spitting out a discolored tea leaf with a frown, Field said, “My concern is that I don’t have the authority to command him.
I can only pass on your request to see him, and whether that will be acted upon depends on his mood today.”
Disraeli pondered over these words but still couldn’t comprehend the reason for Field’s cryptic statement.
Leaning forward, he asked, “Do you know what his mood is today then?”
Considering the scene with Arthur from the previous night, Field set down his cup and said, “I can’t be certain.
He might be very happy or quite calm.
Of course, if I were him, I’d be furious for being woken up in the middle of the night to examine a corpse.
But that gentleman…
he is one of the few good-tempered men at Scotland Yard.
Perhaps he’ll consider it an honor to have been of service to the public.”
Disraeli was baffled by Field’s words.
He scratched his head in irritation and drummed his knuckles on the desktop, “Never mind, I’ll ask one last question.
When exactly do you plan to let me go?
If you don’t release me by noon today, I will write to the Magistrates’ Court requesting a personal protection order for myself!
Although I’m not practicing now, I must tell you, I trained in law!”
Field nodded, “Don’t worry, sir.
There will be a routine Senior Police Meeting for the London region at the Greater London Police Department this morning.
As soon as that meeting is over, we’ll surely let you go.”
No sooner had Field finished speaking than the iron door of the interrogation room was slowly pushed open.
He turned his head to look and jumped in alarm, quickly standing up to salute, “Superintendent Hasting!”
The older policeman who opened the door frowned solemnly at these words and corrected him, “Field, after working all night, is your head not clear?
Can you really not recognize the police ranks of the Greater London Police Department now?”
Standing behind the older police officer, Arthur placed a hand, clad in a white glove, on his shoulder and spoke with a smile, “Let it be, Cleverly.
Young people do need to learn.
Besides, after working all night, it’s reasonable for him to be a little dazed.”
Upon hearing this, Field was momentarily stunned.
When he refocused, he noticed the anomaly on Arthur’s epaulettes.
The three glistening Bath stars had vanished, replaced by a Crown insignia adorned with jeweled stars.
“Hastings…
Chief Superintendent, good…
good morning!” Field’s pupils dilated as he stood at attention and saluted again in a fluster.
Arthur smoothed his crumpled white glove, then returned the salute with a smile.
“Good morning, Officer Field.
Oh, I almost forgot to ask you, would you be interested in transferring to my district?
I am very satisfied with your intelligence, so I intend to send you an invitation to transfer.”
