The Secret Obsession of the CEO
Chapter 98: What She Wants

Chapter 98: What She Wants

A boy...

Rory wondered if Uncle Lenny wants a boy. But she didn’t understand what made Sidney so scared about it. Knowing her, she might be worrying if she would lose her figure if she has another baby.

But thinking about having another kid, she got scared too. But she cleared her throat.

"Liam says he wants a boy too! What’s with the Roberts? Grandma Roberts could not stop talking about her desire of having more girls in the family, but the men... They want boys!" Rory laughed mostly to veil her fright. "I guess, everyone wants what they don’t have."

Only after saying what she did, did Rory realize that she brought up grandma Roberts to Sidney. Grandma Roberts is not at all fond of Lennon’s family as it reminds her of grandpa Roberts’ unfaithfulness. Bringing her up might have hurt Sidney.

"That is true...we always want what we don’t have like~" Sidney stopped mid-sentence as if she woke up from a trance. She stood up and played with the wedding ring, she walked to the window.

"I am hearing Liam’s company is doing very well. Lennon was bragging how soon Liam’s company might be the biggest of LR Holdings," Sidney said with her usual plastic smile.

"Did he?" Rory was happy. If uncle Lennon said that, then that should be true. He is not someone who minces his words.

So... Fizzy is doing well!

"Yes," Sidney nodded. "You..." she looked at Rory from top to bottom, "should prepare yourself for the lifestyle of a CEO’s wife... You’re..." she stared at her in deep thoughts. "It’s going to be hard..."

"But you’ll have to if you want him to stay with you on paper. Or who knows? He might find a young new thing to f*ck, you see, the ones with perky boobs, who know how to blow really good...the young bright-eyed ones who call themselves "sugar babies"..." She let out a sigh. "At least twenty years... then you can get half with a neat all..." she mumbled under her breath.

Rory’s heart skipped a beat.

Surely, I did not hear about Sidney’s plans for divorcing uncle Lenny, right?

Or... maybe she was generalizing? There is not a single rich man who stays in a long marriage, right? Well...

"Uncle Lenny was very worried for you," Rory said, not wanting to think depressing thoughts about rich men and their infidelity.

There are men like Uncle Lenny, right? Men, who truly care for their wives?

"He was?" Sidney stopped fiddling with her ring and looked at Rory.

"Yes! He forgot that we were getting divorced and asked me to be here for Derick’s wedding for your sake!" Rory did admire that and she told Sidney in an admiring tone.

But Sidney didn’t seem much impressed and she looked through the window. "If he wanted to do something for MY sake, he wouldn’t have brought me here..." She mumbled. "Damn! I miss drinking wine..."

Rory gulped as she didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know if Sidney and uncle Lenny are fighting or if it is one of those "pregnancy mood swings". Sidney seemed bitter. That was new for Rory to watch. Sidney never was the sharpest tool in the shed, but she never showed her bitterness so blatantly.

Am I overthinking?

She must just be tired that the Roberts family treats her as a pariah. I wasn’t home for a few days and it must have gotten on her nerves.

Yeah, that should be it!

Ugh! Families! Can’t live with them, can’t ignore them either!

As she was contemplating how to turn this negative mood around, there was a knock on the door. Rory stood up to open the door and she thought she saw Sidney wiping her eyes.

Okay...I’ll pretend I didn’t see that... Or should I ask? What should I do?

She ran to the door and opened the door. She was stunned and stood frozen for a moment before she gathered herself.

"Grandma, Mrs. Delport... Come in..." she smiled.

Mrs. Delport pushed the wheelchair and brought Agnes Roberts in. Sidney smiled at them politely. Rory asked her to take a seat but Sidney insisted on leaving. Rory knew no one would dare to sit and talk with her dear grandmother and she didn’t force her to stay.

"Is uncle coming to get you?" Rory asked.

"Oh, no... he’s busy taking care of... He said that some employee of his company died and he... He’s busy," Sidney said walking out. "I’ll find a way. You stay here, Aurora. Look after your grandmother," Sidney was focused on leaving, she almost ran away.

Ah...dear grandmother could scare everyone away even when she is in a wheelchair! What a powerful woman!

Rory left the door open, hoping that her grandmother would keep her simple. She didn’t want to hear another nickname for her like "sociopath". After telling them she saw a creature that seemed to be jumped out of a fantasy world, she haven’t talked to her grandmother yet.

Maybe this time she will call me schizophrenic? Or bipolar? Ugh!

She walked back in and carefully sat at an optimum distance from her grandmother. She waited for any of them to speak, but they didn’t.

She talked to Mrs. Delport who was staring at her, to break the awkward silence. "You didn’t have to visit me. My fever has gone down. I am just~"

"Your grandmother had an appointment with the doctor and that’s why we came here. And on the way home, we decided to visit you."Mrs. Delport replied.

"Oh," Rory nodded awkwardly. She didn’t know why she thought her grandmother came here for the sole purpose of visiting her. "What did the doctor say? How is grandma doing?" she asked.

"The prognosis is not that..." Mrs. Delport cleared her throat. "We can only make her comfortable as her body..."

"Oh..." Rory gulped and bowed her head. She fiddled with her fingers.

Her grandmother is said to be the most powerful woman who has great connections. She must have a lot of wealth too. And in the end, she has to suffer from a disease with no cure.

In the end, what is the meaning of life? What is the use in trying to do anything? What is anything worth?

"It’s not hereditary. So you don’t have to worry about getting faulty genes," Agnes said and Rory looked up.

"Grandma, that’s not what I was thinking about," Rory spoke softly as her a lump formed in her throat. Her grandmother always finds words to hurt her.

Her eyes reddened and for a second, she thought her grandmother was feeling sorry.

"What did she want?" Mrs. Delport asked and Rory turned at Mrs. Delport. "That sorry excuse of a woman..."

Rory was surprised to see Mrs. Delport pitying someone. "Sorry excuse?" She asked.

"Yeah," Mrs. Delport smiled cheekily. "She’s from a farming town and had she stayed there, she would have married a farmer or a rancher and will have half a dozen kids by now. But she had high aspirations and look where it brought her!"

"But she became Miss~"

"Pft!" Mrs. Delport snorted. "She won a pageant and what? She didn’t even stay in the limelight for long. She couldn’t even monetize such a great opportunity. She could have become a great movie star. But... She married the first rich man who sent her flowers and... Look what she has done to her face now..."

"Well, she has a family now and a husband who treasures her. She has servants to her beck and call and parties to attend. She wears high fashion and the latest jewelry... What more could a woman want?" Rory said.

"Yeah, all that, and... Getting drunk on wine at 9 AM, not having family dinners in ages, wondering if her husband is banging the secretary secretly or openly...She does not have a family. She has an ATM." Mrs. Delport said.

"Oooh, Mrs. Delport, did Mr. Delport hurt you? Rory said.

And she immediately regretted saying that. "I am sorry, Mrs. Delport," she said. Mrs. Delport was still staring at her with her eyes wide as if she didn’t expect Rory would speak this way to her.

"I didn’t mean it... By the way, you never talked about Mr. Delport..." She smiled awkwardly to change the subject.

She didn’t think that Sidney is someone pitiful. But she knew her grandmother who made it her life to advance her career would not appreciate that sort of lifestyle where the husband earns and the wife stays home.

She regretted speaking up for Sidney. She now knew that she must have angered her grandmother by saying that all women want to be "useless soccer moms". Not to mention, she has insulted Mrs. Delport.

"And what do you want?" Agnes asked.

Rory bowed her head.

I’m dead!

Oh, Rory! You and your f*cking mouth! See, now you entrapped yourself.

"I am aspiring to be a lawyer. It is something I always wanted," she said with a polite smile. But she knew what her grandmother would say next.

"If you aspire to be a lawyer as you say, you would be in school right now," Agnes said. "Pregnancy and childbirth are not excuses."

"Yes, Ma’am!" Rory said.

She was hurt, but she agreed with her grandmother. If it was her passion, it would have burned in her bones not letting her sleep. She won’t be dreaming of the house she wants to build with Liam.
