Chapter 86: Lawyer Calls
"Do you think there is a weird "creature" living in these parts of the woods, Sammy?" Ranger Morgan asked fixing his belt.
They’ve never been to this part of the woods, but they were asked by their superiors to conduct a cursory search in a large part of the woods because they received an incredibly credible complaint.
Sam Jenkins shrugged as he walked dragging his boots on the ground. He did not want to be here. "Those Roberts kids are very petty... Because we refused to join their little search party, they created this monster and we now have to find it! Smart pricks! Even the eldest grandson joined in this time!"
"Kids? They have kids of their own...I knew those rugrats will grow up to be trouble. I thought with one becoming a fed, they’d turn a new leaf, but..." Morgan scoffed. He squinted his eyes seeing a set of fresh boot prints on the ground, but he shrugged it off.
It could be that Goldilocks’ boot print!
"Eldest, youngest... what does it matter? They are all Roberts. They have the same trickster blood and they all think that the redhead is the one ring of power!"
Sam laughed. "Some people never grow up. Monster? It was grey and it has her ring! Pah! The only monster around here would be the spirit of "Mad Roberts"." Sam grunted. "Heh! If not for the Chief Justice, would anyone even care about them?
"Wait..." Ranger Morgan stopped Sam. "Do you smell it? Like something burning...?"
Sam looked keenly and sniffed.
"Pah!" he spat. "No. Do you?" he looked at Morgan.
"Me neither." Morgan shrugged.
He knitted his brows. He did smell something in the air but he didn’t want to check it.
He is not paid enough as it is, alright?
Both of them passed the rocky crevice.
"See that... that should be Frank’s truck!" Morgan gritted his teeth seeing the truck in the distance.
"Did those kids lie? They wanted us to find the truck and made up a story about monsters! Urgh!" Sam grunted. "Those kids!" He kicked the ground. "I’m so..."
"Hey, Sammy. Do you see anything here? For me, this place looks...undisturbed." Ranger Morgan lit up a cigarette.
"Oh, I too see nothing here..." Sam Jenkins went along with Morgan’s plan. "It looks like it is going to rain, doesn’t it?" He pointed at the clouds in the distance.
"Yeah, we should leave," Morgan blew a ring with the smoke.
Both of the rangers ignored the obvious signs in front of them and left the woods thinking that Rory and Liam were lying about seeing the creature.
-----
Liam looked out to see the sun rising. He wondered if the rangers found any evidence yet. He had an uneasy feeling in his heart as he thought about that creature they encountered.
He got down from the bed and poured himself a glass of water. But his lips curved seeing Rory and Ellie sleeping on the same bed.
His wife caused a fuzz last night insisting that he stays with her. Although it was not hospital policy, they had to add a bed to the room to accommodate him. He would have slept with her on the same bed, but his dear daughter didn’t want to leave her mother’s side. She’s been hanging on to Rory’s chest as if she’s a sloth.
Seriously, how hungry can a baby be?
He walked to Rory’s bed and gently caressed Ellie who was sucking her fingers once again. He picked her up trying to soothe her back to sleep.
Rory has a high fever and she couldn’t sleep deeply because the baby is not letting her. She should be able to heal only if she rests. She’s gone pale.
Liah ate just an hour ago. Surely she won’t be hungry this soon. He had a feeling that she was suckling to soothe and not because of hunger.
After all, the baby was never away from her mother for this long and the absence of her mother might have traumatized her.
Just like Rory is clinging on to him the entire night, Ellie is clinging on to her mother.
How adorable!
"It’s okay, Liah," he kissed her little head. "Mommy won’t leave you again. So let her rest for a while, alright? It was dad’s fault."
He whispered gently and rocked her. But his dear daughter was having none of it. Without opening her eyes, she moaned with her lips trembling.
And that was enough for Rory to wake up. "She’s awake again?" She tried to sit up. But she couldn’t. Liam helped her up.
"Ellie, Mommy’s here," she said and her face bloomed into a smile. "Did my Ellie get hungry again?" She spoke softly and kissed her cheek.
The baby answered her with a cry. Cajoling the baby with a soft cooing voice, Rory fed her. Liam let out a sigh.
The woman with everlasting patience in front of me... Is this really the Cherry I know?
He stared at her.
"What?" Rory asked as she felt his stare on her.
He shook his head. But he didn’t avert his eyes. He kept on looking at the baby.
"Alright, what?" Rory asked covering her chest.
She felt something weird in her lower abdomen as he stared. She couldn’t concentrate on feeding the baby.
"Those perky melons used to be mine alone. And now this little sucker has set her base camp there... She truly came out of me, this nasty little prick!" He said, rubbing his lower lip with his finger.
His marble eyes met with Rory’s and she cleared her throat. "Just for a year or so more..." She said.
"A year?" He raised his brow. "I just found something so amazing and this little sucker can’t let me enjoy it..." He mumbled.
"Get lost!" Rory bowed her head to hide her blush. She understood what he found recently that he misses very dearly already.
"Why?" Liam asked saying he didn’t understand what she means.
At that time his phone vibrated and looking at it, his face hardened.
"Who is it?" Rory asked.
"...My divorce lawyer," he said after a short silence.
Rory’s heart skipped a beat. "What- are you...What does he want?" She stuttered.
She didn’t know what his stance was about divorce yet. He confessed that he is in love with her.
But what about the divorce?
"Fizzy..." She tried to hold his hand. She couldn’t move much because Ellie was still feeding.
Liam looked at her for a moment before averting his eyes. He avoided her hand and walked out of the room answering the call.
