Chapter 76: Lost Mother

Chapter 76: Lost Mother

"My mother... She never wanted me... She hated me even before I was born... I..." Liam’s empty eyes met with Rory’s.

"I made her depressed, Cherry. I killed her!"

He fell on her lap and burying his face, he started to shake. Rory’s hands were trembling as she tried to make sense of what he said.

"I killed my mother by existing..."

She placed her trembling hand on his head. "Don’t say that, Fizzy... Please..." She choked with all the emotions she felt.

"It’s not your fault... It’s not."

She gently caressed his head with her trembling fingers. "Don’t blame yourself, Fizzy... There should be more to it... There should be..."

As she gently caressed him, she could sense him getting relaxed. As much as she wanted to know more, she thought that making him relaxed should be her priority.

He did not look well and she was scared that he has a knife. He won’t hurt her. But he might hurt himself.

She bent and kissed his head.

She couldn’t understand why a mother would hate her child for any reason or be depressed about having a child. There should be something that pushed her to that.

But what could that be?

She remembered him saying that Frank was not his dad.

Wait...did she cheat?

No... That doesn’t make sense. Why would Frank take care of her for ten years if she cheated on him?

Well, he could have loved her that much...

Or...

Her eyes widened.

"Was she...your mother...was she...forced? Frank told you anything?" She asked.

Liam looked at her.

"How did you figure it..." His eyes widened with panic. "You hate me now, don’t you? Do you feel irked to touch me? Do you want to spit on my face? I am a r@pe baby! Come on! Tell me how much~"

"Oh, shush, fool!" Rory knocked on his head to stop him from speaking nonsense. She couldn’t understand why he thinks that way.

"What difference does it make to know how you were made or who your father...wait...do you know who your..." She paused. She didn’t want to call a beast who forced a woman Liam’s father.

"Do you know who that man was?" She asked.

He shook his head. And he kept on staring at her. He didn’t see any difference in how she looked at him. She looked lively as always. He thought that she would spit on his face and would say that he is exactly like his scumbag father who hurt women. He did hurt her a lot after all.

Shouldn’t she berate him for his genes and tell him that he’s a deadbeat just like his father?

But she was not saying anything of that sort and was concerned for him. And like always, her fingers have magic. She could calm him down so easily.

Right... My Cherry always cares for me... She’d be there for me when I need her. Always.

He started wondering if the truth he learned is as important and serious as he thought it was.

It is an important truth because it concerns his mother.

But...

Is it worth dying for?

"What else did Frank say?" She asked.

"I..." He bowed his head and scratched his head.

Rory thought he won’t speak further. If he thinks about his mother, he will sink into his dark thoughts.

She got pissed at Frank. "What was Frank thinking? He knows how much of an idiot you are. Why did he speak about this now when he kept quiet for this long? Would it have hurt him to die keeping that secret? I hate him! You know what? First thing after we get out of this place, I am talking to Frank!" She pointed at Liam.

Liam was a little comforted that Rory got mad at Frank, on his behalf. Well, she did call him an idiot. But that’s fine. It’s the truth, anyway.

"It was not the first time this came up..." Liam intercepted her angry rant.

"Oh?" Rory was surprised he was talking more.

"Do you remember the other big fight I had with dad?"

"Yeah, back when we... When you stayed with me?" Rory asked.

She was a little happy to hear Liam mentioning Frank as ’Dad’. But she hid her happiness.

She knew that Frank loves Liam. There were plenty of reasons why he could have abandoned Liam. Liam gave a hundred reasons for Frank to hate him. And knowing the truth now, Frank never had to take care of Liam in the first place.

But Frank never abandoned him and did everything a father would. That’s love.

"Yes," Liam wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer. "That day... I saw a paternity test report. I saw my name on it and... I confronted dad about it..." He leaned on her shoulder.

Rory pressed her cheek on his head and listened silently. That day too he looked and acted weird. She could sense that he has relaxed a bit. And she knew he has to go deep if he has to truly get out of the dark thoughts he has.

She decided to listen silently.

"He refused to talk about it. He said that I am his son and there is nothing more I should know. And it made me mad. I thought my mother killed herself because my father doubted her and my paternity...but turns out..."

He fell silent and Rory patted his thigh. He broke from his trance and spoke further.

"It was my grandpa who took that test without anyone’s knowledge... My dad never thought about it... He..."

"So your family knows about it?" She asked.

Liam sighed.

"I don’t think so... Grandma does not know... Maybe only granddad knew... Dad said that... It was weird, Cherry..."

"Weird? How?" Rory asked.

"There was no proof... Dad said that it was just any regular day. Mom and dad were in their room that afternoon because they didn’t have any classes. She was sleeping and... Dad left to have a smoke. Mom was still sleeping when he returned. The apartment was just how it was. But when mom woke up, she started to act hysterical and said that she was r@ped by someone. And..."

"It is weird," Rory held his hand.

"Dad didn’t believe her. He thought she had a bad dream and..." Liam’s voice turned somber. "She became pregnant. Maybe because she was not sure the baby was his, she was not happy at all... Dad was sure the baby was his and he convinced her to marry him. He even brought her back here for a change... But mom never had a change of mind..."

Rory held his hand tightly. She understood what happened next. His mother sank into depression as no one believed what had happened to her. She couldn’t accept the baby as she was convinced that the baby was not Frank’s but the r@pist’s.

Frank loved his wife and could not let go of her. Maybe he didn’t want to think that Liam was not his...

His mom was adamant. Frank was too. Both didn’t want to think otherwise.
