Chapter 74: Lost Ring
Chapter 74: Lost Ring
Liam looked scared and at the same time, he looked determined. Rory noticed him holding the knife tightly.
He truly thinks that there is someone else in this place...
"There are no guns in the truck?" She asked him. He shook his head.
"What a pain in the ass..." Rory let out a sigh.
"You believe me?" Liam asked. Even he was surprised she is believing him.
Rory shrugged. "I don’t think I slipped and fell... " she mumbled and took a careful look around. She then leaned closer to him and whispered in his ears.
"I saw something, Fizzy... Something grey, pale and thin...He...It...It was very thin with a big head and bigger eyes. Those eyes... They were like big pools of the abyss."
Liam’s heart skipped a beat. "Really?" He clutched her hand.
Rory could feel him shivering out of fright. She leaned closer to his face. His warm breath fell on her and his hand holding her hand tightened as she spoke. "Yes," she nodded and she saw his pupils dilating.
"I saw something similar at the distance behind a tree," he said.
"You saw it too?" Rory raised her brows. "Was he holding a ring and called it "My Precious" too?" She asked imitating the voice of "Gollum" from "The Lord of the Rings".
Liam blinked his eyes and pulled back.
"Idiot..." Rory looked away. "Speaking of rings..." She mumbled and checked her finger. And her face paled.
The ring is gone...
Without thinking twice, she opened the door and tried to get out.
"Stop!"
Liam pulled her from behind holding her collar snd stopped her from leaving.
"No, let go!" Rory struggled to get out of his hold.
She knew Liam will kill her if he learns that she lost his mother’s ring. He would definitely blame her for purposefully losing his mother’s ring.
"I need to go out. Let go, Fizzy. I’ll be back in a minute..."
She tried to figure out where she might have lost the ring. The ring fit her perfectly and there is no way it would have slipped from her finger.
Did I not wear it today? Could it be back home?
"No." Liam pulled her closer to his chest snd hugged her tightly to stop her from leaving him. "Shush... Calm down, Cherry... We can leave once the rain stops..."
"No way..." Rory remembered thinking of giving the ring back to Liam once more as she walked back.
She loosened it and rolled it in her finger in deep thoughts as she walked. Then she fainted.
It should be somewhere around where I fainted! And I should find it before the rain displaces it elsewhere!
"I have to pee..." Rory found an excuse.
"Hold it in." Liam was not falling for it.
"But I have to go," Rory clutched his collar. "Urgently. Otherwise, I’ll stink up these nice leather seats..." She smirked.
Liam shrugged. Rory sighed realizing that Liam is not going to care for his father’s car.
"Let go..." She pinched and prodded him. She needed to get out and she couldn’t get out of his hold.
"Here... Use this..."
Liam handed her an empty bottle and Rory rolled her eyes.
"How do I even..."
Liam nodded in understanding. "You can’t... So, how about...this?" He dangled a small container in front of her.
Rory got the container resigning to her fate. "Turn around," she said with a pout.
"Hmm?" He wriggled his brows with a naughty grin. "You carry on...I’ll have to check if you’re okay."
After glaring at him for some time, he relented and the moment he turned away, she twisted her body and tried to unlock the door.
She pulled the handle, first slowly but it didn’t budge and she slowly used more strength. But before the door could open she felt a warmth enveloping her back.
"Seriously, Rory?" Liam looked at her with a disappointed face and covered that handle with his big hand.
"Let me open the door, Liam," Rory grumbled. She tried to get to the handle but he gripped it tight. Her heart pounded having lost something so important to Liam. She couldn’t believe she had lost the memorandum of Liam’s mother.
"No." He averted his glance and held her hand. He gently caressed her fingers and she saw the slight ripple in his eyes as if he recognized something.
Did he figure it out?
She tried to get her hand back but he didn’t let go of her hand. He bowed his head and looked at her hand. His thumb gently traced over her ring finger.
"You’re not wearing the ring today?" He asked.
Out of fear, perspiration formed on her forehead and she stared at Liam.
"The rain has slowed down. I’ll go and check where I fainted. I’m sure it must be around there. I remember having it until I...fainted..." She started to hyperventilate seeing his blank expression.
"I’m sorry, okay... I don’t know how I lost it... I will definitely find it. I know how important that ring is for you and..."
Her hands started to shake.
"Cherry," Liam leaned closer.
Rory got alert and with a gasp, she leaned back. Her head hit the window right where her wound was. She teared up and she felt something warm trickling on her neck.
"You’re..." Liam pulled her closer. "...bleeding again..."
Rory leaned back pushing on his chest. "It doesn’t matter. I’ll definitely find~"
"Are you that scared of me, Cherry? Am I that..." Liam’s voice shook.
Rory furrowed her brows. "I know that ring is important for you. I didn’t lose that on purpose. I must have lost it when I fainted..."
"I didn’t say...that..." Liam looked at her.
She was trembling and it broke his heart to see her like that. She was that scared of him.
"Cherry, I am not blaming you..." Liam held her hand and he winced by how cold her hands were.
Rory bowed her head. He might not blame her now. But he will blame her one day. She had heard him blame her for all sorts of things. She didn’t want this to add to the list.
"I’ll find that ring and return it to you before getting back to my baby. I promise," she said and opened the truck door.
Liam looked at her without blinking. The woman in front of him looked defeated. And he knew it was he who did that to her.
It was his words that hurt her and turned her into... His angry words...the words he "didn’t mean"...
" It’s dangerous outside, Cherry," he shouted.
She turned at him with a wry smile on her face. It was as if she was saying that she would take her chance with the wild than with him.
"I have something to say to you," he shouted. She was not turning back anymore and was walking. His heart bled seeing her bleeding wound.
He wanted to stop her.
"My father told me that I am not his son, today," he blurted out the first thing that came to his mind.
And the moment he said it, he regretted it.
