Chapter 40: Secrets And Regrets

Liam leaned on the wall rubbing his forehead. He didn’t have to think hard to know what she was thinking as she caressed her wedding dress. He feared to step inside the room and waited for some more minutes.

Their wedding day... The best day of his life.

She looked like a heavenly being walking on earth. He never saw her wearing dresses much till then. Well, there was the prom and she wore white then too... that long slit that reached her thigh, that sexy sweetheart neckline that revealed her slender shoulders...It was hard for him to...

Ehem!

But the wedding was different. She looked so pretty he wanted to cry. This is the woman he loves and she is going to become his wife. How can he hold back his emotions? But he had to. Everyone was watching.

And the ceremony went well. She was very nervous too. He thought she will faint for sure and kept an eye on her for the entire day. But she held on very well.

After the reception, when it was time for her to get out of her dress...

Liam’s lips curved to a smile as he remembered her struggles.

"Fizzy?"

Rory’s voice snapped Liam out of his pleasant thoughts and his smile vanished remembering her troubled expression some time ago.

"Where’s Ellie?" Rory asked seeing Liam standing there alone. She wondered why he was standing by the door when the door was open.

"She’s with Mrs. Delport," Liam replied. He saw her red eyes. And he didn’t want to acknowledge it.

He knows that he is the reason for her tears. If he cannot solve her problem, what is the use of asking her about it?

Should I just hug her at least once?

Ah... No!

"Shall we leave?" he asked. She needs to sleep. He knew she wouldn’t prefer to sleep here. She is scared of this place. And his father would be expecting them back.

Rory stared at him blankly. Thinking about her divorce she didn’t feel like returning to Liam’s home. After their marriage, she stayed there without hesitation because it was her husband’s house.

But now... she was a little embarrassed to go there and she never felt welcomed in her grandmother’s home.

I’m homeless, aren’t I?

She wetted her lips which went dry. Her lips curved to a mocking smile. But then she took a deep breath reaching a decision. She wanted to make arrangements for her travel to her homeland.

"I’ll stay in a hotel for the night and-"

"Right," Liam held her wrist. "Let’s discuss it," he dragged her to the living room.

Rory was not in the mood to fight him. After talking to her grandmother for some time, they said their goodbyes. Mrs. Delport was not happy to see her leave. She asked them to stay the night here.

Rory was not surprised that her grandmother didn’t ask her to stay in this house just for the sake of it. She insisted that she is leaving although it was hard to convince Mrs. Delport and they walked out of the house.

They got in the car and Rory waved for Mrs. Delport who was standing by the door.

"Come here for lunch tomorrow, Rory," she waved her hands and Rory nodded with a smile. The car rushed out.

-----

"She still can’t wait to leave," Mrs. Delport sighed as she closed the door.

Agnes pushed the walker that was near the couch and it fell on the floor. "Keep it out of my sight, Lina. I don’t want to be reminded constantly that I am only one more stroke away from losing the use of my legs!" she grumbled and stretched herself.

"Yes," Mr’s Delport nodded.

"I’m going to bed," Agnes stood up. Her back was not slouched anymore and her eyes were sharp. Even her gait was large as she walked up the stairs.

Mrs. Delport picked up the walker. Agnes insisted that Rory should be here and she bought the walker to play the part of a sick person knowing that Rory will visit.

"What about the nursery you prepared for the baby’s stay?" Lina asked.

Agnes had the nursery in the house painted and had it decorated for her great-granddaughter’s stay. The entire room is filled with toys and new clothes for the baby. For the past week, Mrs. Deport saw the excitement Agnes tried to hide in her eyes.

And Rory didn’t even see it.

"What about it? You saw her! She left as if her tail was on fire," Agnes continued climbing the stairs.

Mrs. Delport smiled. Although Agnes tried to act normal she is very worried. But she wanted to tease her. "Should I clean out that room and throw all the stuff away? Or better yet, why don’t we donate those toys and clothes~ "

"Don’t you dare touch them!" Agnes’ tone went hard and it only made Mrs. Delport’s smile widen. Agnes stopped as she reached the end of the stairs.

"She would have stayed if you asked her," Mrs. Delport said. "You are her grandmother and she would expect affection from you..."

Mrs. Delport’s tone softened and she stopped talking as she saw Agnes kneading the railing. Agnes bowed her head and went silent.

"I am sorry, ma’am," Mrs. Delport bowed her head. Saying nothing Agnes walked to her room.

-----

"Here, milk," Liam offered Rory a glass of warm milk.

Rory gestured at him to place it on the nightstand. But Liam didn’t and kept on staring at her.

She didn’t know why she is back in his room to drink milk. For some reason, when she told him about her plans to leave for a hotel to stay in, he was silent and told her to pack her bags. And now he is forcing her to drink milk.

She loves milk. It makes her sleep well.

Rory finished the glass and placed the glass on the table. And just then Ellie cried out of hunger. Sitting on the bed, she fed her.

"Stop staring!" she grumbled at Liam whose eyes were on her chest. "Get out!" she pointed at the door annoyed by his smirk. She didn’t want to hear the crude remarks that usually will follow his smirk.

Liam stared at her for a couple of seconds before leaving the room. Rory couldn’t even keep her eyes open as Ellie was feeding. She was very tired.

By sheer will, she kept herself awake until Ellie satiated her hunger. Placing Ellie on her shoulder she tried to burp her. But she was very tired.

"Fizzy!" she called. She thought she will have to call him louder but he came running inside just after her meek call for him.

"Here, burp her," she passed Ellie to Liam and lay on the bed.

That’s what she last remembered. But then she woke up with her entire body hurting. With difficulty, she opened her eyes again. She was lying on Liam’s bed and he was lying beside her.

Ah! I should take another pill! My temperature is rising again. And... why is he not wearing his shirt?
