Chapter 33: The Reason He Asked For The Divorce

"This road does need a decent fountain," Liam said with a smile.

He was relieved to see her. And if she is talking back, she is feeling better.

"Wouldn’t you prefer me as a fountain so you could piss on me more?" Rory’s voice broke as she spoke. She heard him walking closer. She couldn’t see his face as the headlights were glaring. She sniffed and wiped her face. "It doesn’t matter to you, right? You always do and say whatever you want with me! I’m like a..." she couldn’t speak further.

She placed Ellie on her lap. Ellie is awake now and she cannot cry in front of her. Hearing his sigh, she rolled her eyes. Although she was mad at him, she was greatly relieved he is by her side now. All her fears got washed away and she got relaxed.

"Do you piss on fountains back where you grew up?" Liam sat beside her.

"Hmph!" Rory could only snort. The chill wind ended up in her lungs causing her to shiver. Liam covered her with his jacket. Rory glared at him but she hugged his jacket closer. She was cold.

With a chuckle, Liam observed her. Her entire face looked red. She must have cried a lot. And it is all his fault. He lost his smile.

He blanked out for a while seeing her retreating frame. He has hurt her beyond belief. It was not just him asking her for a divorce and not helping her in raising her baby. It was worse than that. His mistakes are adding up and he is singlehandedly making it seem like he is toxic to her.

Maybe I am toxic...

His thoughts were disturbed by the sound of a phone ring. He had switched off his phone and he looked inside the car. It was then he realized that she had left her phone there.

It was Mrs. Delport calling and he answered. Hearing his voice, Mrs. Delport screamed in joy. When he told her that they are here to meet Rory’s grandmother, Mrs. Delport cried in joy.

After ending the call, he wondered why Rory left the phone. She was very angry when she left and he thought that she won’t even spare a glance at him again. It is hardly likely that she left the phone to give him a chance to follow her.

She might have accidentally left the phone, he concluded. He decided to drop her where she wants to and he wanted to talk to her if she permits. When he saw her sitting in the middle of the road, crying, his heart broke.

But she is cute with her lips pouting... Look how careful she is with the baby... And she is distressed.

He never wanted this! He never wanted her hurt. She is the one person he loves the most in this world. He’d kill himself before hurting her. But he already hurt her beyond measures. Maybe if someone asks her, she will say that he is the one person who hurt her the most and she would be right.

I probably am the one she hates the most.

Liam placed his hand over his chest. He felt stuffy. He truly did not like to think that she hates him. He didn’t want any negative feelings between them. He wanted to make her feel better. But he didn’t know what he should do.

He couldn’t come up with anything. He wondered if it would be better if he stays away from her as he did for the past year. It was a wrong decision to decide to spend time with his little family one last time.

But my Cherry and little Liah... How can I stay away?

But...

Shouldn’t I stay away from them for their sake?

"Cherry," he placed his hand over her hand, and she looked at him. "I am sorry," he said.

Rory looked at his face. The headlights were casting a strong shadow on half of his face. His lips looked red and his eyes were clouded. She could see that he is hurting too.

But she wanted to know his heart. She never thought that he is someone who speaks his heart. But he proved that he speaks what he doesn’t mean at times too. She wanted to know if he is apologizing from his heart.

"Why?" she asked. "What are you apologizing for?"

"Why?" he raised his brows. "Because I..." his eyebrows trembled.

I hurt you. I left you when I was in the wrong...

He wanted to meet her for months. After the fight with Derick, they had a talk. After his talk with Derick, he wanted to meet her and talk with her. But he couldn’t gather up his courage.

Those blue eyes of hers... he feared facing them.

Just like right now... His words got stuck in his throat. But he needs to speak up. She cannot cry anymore because of him.

"I am sorry for thinking that you were trying to hurt your grandmother... " he said.

Rory looked at his eyes and tears were hanging on the rims of his eyes. It made her cry as she could see that he means it.

"I am sorry for..." he reached out his hand to wipe her tears. "Rory, I..." he pressed his forehead over hers.

Rory heard him gulp. "Okay..." she held his hand. She didn’t know she would get over his hurtful words this easily just with a simple apology.

Since he took a step forward,She wanted to know more.

"I wanted to talk to my grandmother about our divorce because..." she leaned back to look at his eyes. His eyes widened as he listened to her.

"I..." she cleared her throat and looked away. She wondered if she should talk about it. She didn’t want to get hurt more but...

"I thought you’ll tell her why you wanted the divorce, Fizzy," Rory spoke the truth. Her heart started to pound. Her eyes clouded and she couldn’t see his expression. "Will you tell me why?"

She tried to wipe her eyes to have a look at him. But before she could look at him, she could feel his hand leaving hers. She wiped her eyes to look at him. He was turning his back at her and looking into the darkness.

Is he looking for words? How complicated can it be?

"Liam," she called him and she turned to her side as she heard a vehicle approaching them from the front.

Rory covered her eyes to have a good look. She recognized that truck. It was Liam’s father. Rory stood up. Her heart started to pound.

"Liam," she pulled his sleeves and he shrugged her off and walked back to his car.

"Look what the cat dragged in!"

The happy voice of Frank Roberts forced Rory to look at him. She had a feeling that Liam would flee. She didn’t want to let him leave.

"Ah, Rory! Why didn’t you call? I would have come picked you up! Awww! Is that my beautiful granddaughter? Look how fast she grew up! Look how pretty she is! Here, little angel, come to grandpa!"

Frank didn’t even mind Liam. He hugged Rory and got Ellie from her arm and kissed her chubby cheeks.

"Give a kiss to grandpa..." he chuckled.

Rory’s eyes ended up at Liam. With the headlights glaring, she couldn’t see his face.

"You don’t look well..." Frank noticed Rory’s reddened eyes and she saw his face turning red out of anger. He gritted his teeth. He walked forward with his fists clenched. "What did that son of a-"

"Uncle," Rory hooked her hands with Frank and dragged him to his car. "Take me home," she said and got Ellie from his hands.

Leaving the carrycot and her luggage, she only picked up the diaper bag and got inside Frank’s truck.

"Let’s go, uncle. I am hungry!" she urged Frank.

"Okay," Frank nodded. His breathing was heavy. His lips twitched with anger and disappointment. Rory has seen this reaction on Frank’s face plenty of times.

"Your luggage..?" Frank asked.

"No, leave it," she waved her hand. "He’ll need a reason to come home," she added. She knew Liam will pick up her luggage and bring it home. Plus her phone is still with him. He will have to come.

Frank let out a long sigh before putting his truck in reverse.

"If only he is half as good as you..." Frank murmured.

He was disappointed with Liam. It is obvious that Liam has hurt Rory once more and still Rory cares for him and wants him to come home. She is the better person and all she gets in return is hurt.

He regretted arranging the wedding between his son and Rory. He felt sorry for destroying the life of the loveliest girl he ever knows.

She deserved someone better. Not this pig!
