Chapter 129: Truth Will Set Free

"I...left something here, and I came to pick it up," Rory lied.

She walked inside her grandmother’s office as she did not want others to hear her conversation.

Lying is the only way she knew to communicate with her family. Because they were so uncaring and because of her insecurities, she always tried to appear perfect. She did not want to lose her home.

And at times(after marriage), she would storm off when they touch a nerve. She always had Liam’s house to stay at. It has become a habit of hers. Although she knew it is wrong, she couldn’t help it.

"I don’t remember you taking the key. What is the key you are having?" Mrs. Delport questioned.

"It’s..." Rory let out a sigh. "How is grandma doing?" she changed the topic.

"She’s... you know. This stroke did a number on her... She’s awake but she’s not all..."

"Stay by her side and look after her, Mrs. Delport," Rory meant it. "I’ll visit her in the morning."

"It’s okay. Don’t get out of the house. Your grandmother dislikes being pictured by the media when she is at the lowest. You understand, right?" Mrs. Delport’s voice was apologetic.

A lump formed in Rory’s throat. She did want to say that she would be careful and not alert the media when she visits, but she couldn’t even say anything because she could read between the lines.

Her grandmother does not want to meet her!

She understood it. There is a horde of reporters in front of Liam’s family house; whenever someone gets near, they start to question them. She cannot move freely.

And they are there for her. She wanted to go to them and ask them to leave, but she was advised not to talk to the reporters, which she found to be a good idea.

But she felt guilty for involving their family in this mess.

"Alright, I’ll leave for LA then. I won’t be a nuisance to everyone. Thank you for taking care of my grandmother, Mrs. Delport. Thank you for everything. Tell grandma that I... love her."

"Are you alright, Rory?" Mrs. Delport asked picking up the slight tremble in her voice.

"Yeah, I am fine. I am..." Rory rubbed her face. "I’ll talk to you later."

She ended the call.

With a sigh, she leaned on the table. She was told that Liam would be transferred to LA on a commercial flight and she wondered if she could get the tickets for the same flight.

But Ellie... What should I do?

She could only sigh. She felt abandoned and a burden at the same time. It was an unusual feeling. After her parent’s death, she tried not to be a nuisance to anyone, although she failed at times.

She felt like she was on a canoe that was trapped in a tunnel. It was a very narrow tunnel and there is only one way out which is to her front. But she couldn’t move forward as she didn’t know what to do.

Everyone is asking her to wait. But what would waiting do? Does Liam have time?

She took a deep breath and opened the safe once more. The hole in the wall was still unrepaired and she was a bit scared. But she opened the safe. There was nothing inside. And no guns went off(thankfully).

She did not want to give up. The information passed by Leroy must be very important that her grandmother wanted to protect it endangering her life even. She got more determined to get that file.

She knelt on the floor and looked at the room from that level. Nothing looked unusual. She lay flat on the carpet and looked under the table. She couldn’t see anything there either.

She put her hand under the table and patted around. And she found something that was taped to the bottom of the table.

Rory pulled it out.

Ah! Found it!

It was the same file she saw Uncle Leroy was holding and she hugged it close to her chest. She wanted to check it out immediately, but she thought it would be a better idea to have a look in a safer place.

"So, have you found what you came here for?" Bobby asked.

"Yeah, I did!" Rory smiled.

Bobby rolled his wrists and stretched his hands.

Rory waited to see what this "guest" in her grandmother’s house will do. She did not believe that he is just some guy who came here to cut trees. Her grandmother allowed him to stay here.

That means, she trusts this guy. And that means she cannot trust this guy. He should be her grandmother’s lackey.

"Are you sleeping here for the night?" Bobby asked.

"What? No!" Rory knitted her brows. "What are you talking about?"

"I just asked a question, Pony. No need to get defensive..." Bobby waved his hands showing his palms. "I am not going to hurt you."

"Yeah?" Rory scoffed. She did not want to believe him, but she trusted him a little. She thought he might not hurt her.

"I have to get back to my baby..." she smiled.

"Baby? You have a baby?" Bobby raised his brows and smiled. His smile was so genuine and he looked so excited. "A boy or a girl?"

"Girl... she’s 4 months old..." Rory said.

"I have two kids!" Bobby scrolled through his phone. Rory walked to him as he showed her the phone. "Look, this is my daughter Cia... This is Robert Jr..."

Rory got the phone from his hand and scrolled through the pictures of his family. His wife looked familiar to her. "Your wife is very pretty! She looks like a model!" She spoke from her heart.

For some reason, she believed that Bobby is a good guy. He looked so excited when he talked about his babies.

"Where do you live? Should I drop you?" Bobby asked.

Rory thought he does not know all the details. But she still believed that he was there to do her grandmother’s bidding.

"No," she waved her hand. "I... my husband’s family house is right next door. I’ll walk through... We have a shortcut."

"You married your next-door neighbor?" Bobby was excited. "Me too! Kitty was my neighbor and we..."

Bobby then told her their love story. And he kept on mentioning some guy named Jerry, and his wife Chippy. Rory poured a glass of wine for herself.

Kitty, Chippy...This guy likes to name women after animals. But he is not a bad guy. He respects the women in his life and he loves his family so much.

After talking for almost an hour, Rory escaped Bobby’s stories and went out after promising him that she will bring her daughter to him in the morning.

When Rory got back to Liam’s house, she was shocked to see Dorothy waiting for her in the living room.

"Did Ellie cause a fuzz, grandma? I’m sorry I was late. I~"

"No, no, dear... Calm down..." Dorothy patted her shoulder and asked her to sit beside her.

Rory thought that Dorothy would say something, but she sat there silently, holding her hand. Rory waited for her to open up. She had a feeling that Dorothy needs to say something to her.

"When my husband brought home that boy... It broke me. I almost left him. He’s..." Dorothy struggled to speak.

Rory waited. It must have affected grandma Roberts so much, that even years later she could not speak about it without choking up. Rory understood her. Liam did something similar. And it hurt her so much. It still does. Sometimes, when she thinks about it, she gets angry at Liam.

All that because she could not accept him looking at another woman. She couldn’t even imagine how she would react if Liam had a child with another woman. It would have broken her.

"We were a rich family... You see this big house, right?" Dorothy looked around. "It used to be filled with so many antiquities and treasures. We had to sell everything because... Rory..."

Dorothy’s eyes met with Rory’s and held her hand. "He is jinxed, Rory. He sucks the life out of everyone and thrives in others’ misfortune. He’s a...vampire, a vulture...like that creature...from that movie Liam likes... the dark creature that sucks the happiness out of anyone around it and leaves them depressed...That’s who he is!"

A dementor?

Rory blinked. She understood the hate Dorothy had for Lennon, but is he that bad?

"Ahhhh! Don’t! Stop! Help!"

The loud scream of Julia jerked Rory and she ran up the stairs. She realized that she is still having that file in her hand and ran to her room first and closed the door.

She heard Lennon’s room opening and she was surprised to hear Derick running out of Lennon’s room, followed by Lennon.

She stored the file under the mattress as she couldn’t think of any other place at that moment. Ellie was not in her room and she thought that Claire might have her with her.

She stepped out of the room and was shocked to see Lennon holding Ellie. He just turned the hallway to go up the stairs where Julia’s shouts were heard.

She didn’t know why, but her heart skipped a beat seeing her baby with Lennon.
