Chapter 98: The Prince’s Efforts

An official declaration was made that announced the sudden passing of King Raxus and Queen Zephyrine, which then caused quite a stir throughout the whole kingdom. Many rumors pertaining to the cause of the monarch’s death spread like wildfire, but not a single one was acknowledged by the royal courts and physician.

Elys paced back and forth in her bedroom. It had been a week already since they had returned without the kingdom’s detection, and Aleksander intended to reveal himself on the day the King and Queen were laid to rest.

’Is this really the right thing to do?’ she asked herself, ’Shouldn’t we at least try to gain support from other nobilities first?’

The princess took to biting her nails in agitation. A knock came at her door and she turned to Cordelia’s voice announcing herself.

"Princess, I have brought the documents you have asked for," the old woman said.

"Very well, come in," Elys said.

The door opened and Cordelia stepped inside with an armload of scrolls and several record books. All of it contained articles and information regarding nobilities Elys wanted to study in detail. From those that held high positions to the ones with a bit of a scandal in their names.

The princess believed that there must be at least a handful of them who could support the prince in his claim for the crown.

"Henry and I have heard during one of our errands regarding the Farvar family rising to the throne, your highness," Cordelia spoke as she set down the books and scrolls on Elys’ table.

"The Farvar family, you say..." Elys hummed in contemplation. That family might turn out to be a difficult enemy to take down. "Is this all that the prince has in his study?"

"Yes, Princess Elysianne," the maidservant bowed. "Prince Aleksander said if you wanted more then he can have Henry fetch more from the royal archives. The royal emblem really does wonders."

"No, I think this will do for now," Elys shook her head, "We might raise suspicion if Henry would get caught using the royal emblem too much. As far as the people know, there’s no one left from the royal bloodline. The fight for the crown will be bloody after the funeral, best to be covert until then."

The princess sat down and picked a book that had the Farvar crest on it. She had been curious how Henry was able to pull records and texts one after another before the masquerade ball. Her question was answered now – they were all actually the prince’s collections!

"Is there anything else you might need, your highness?" Cordelia asked.

The princess shook her head again and waved to dismiss Cordelia. The maidservant smiled as she saw how the princess pored over a book in one hand, and then a scroll with the other.

Her nose was practically glued to the weathered papers that Cordelia was amazed Elys hadn’t been sneezing from the dust these articles had collected over time.

"I will take my leave then," Cordelia bowed despite the princess being distracted with reading, "Ring the servant bell if you would need anything."

"I will," Elys mechanically replied.

As Cordelia closed the doors of her bedchamber, Elys took another scroll and scanned over the names and records written in it. After some time, she didn’t even notice her room had turned dark until she could barely read the text scribbled on the faded papers.

The princess opened her windows, looked out into the sky and noticed the moon shining brightly. It was a clear and beautiful night. A crescent white moon that was turned upside down hung up in the skies, and no clouds were in sight.

"It looks like a sinister smile," Elys murmured under her breath.

She turned to her desk and lit up her lamp for a better illumination. Elys recalled how it had never been there several weeks ago when Aleksander and her were still too hostile to even have a proper conversation. Elys let out a heavy sigh.

The prince had significantly mellowed down since she revealed her true identity, and somehow, it brought some sort of peace to her day-to-day existence. What bothered her was the fact that he had been trying so awkwardly to get her to warm up to him.

He would find ways to talk to her, ask her about her powers, share things that he thought would be of interest to the princess. But aside from that, Aleksander seemed to have made it his mission to court Elys so she’d be willing to help him win the crown by using her powers.

’I think he took it the wrong way when I said I would help him back then,’ she thought at the back of her mind.

The promises she had said back then were mostly survival driven that she regrets it up to this day.

KNOCK KNOCK

Elys was brought back into reality when a series of knocks came from her door. She turned around and scowled, a bit peeved by the sudden intrusion to her melancholy.

"Who is it?" she asked when no one spoke from the other side.

"Its me," came the prince’s voice. "May I come in?"

The princess raised an incredulous brow at the politeness in Aleksander’s words. His efforts to treat her nicely still made her uncomfortable, but in a sense, she did appreciate it.

"Why are you here, husband? Do you need anything?" Elys said as she slowly walked to the door and opened it for the prince to come in.

As Elys twisted the knob and opened the door just a crack, her nose was quick to detect the delicious aroma of food. When she finally swung the door wide open, the view that greeted her almost made her choke in disbelief.

"I heard from the maidservant you have neglected dinner," the prince sheepishly said.

The princess’ eyes widened. Aleksander had brought in a tray of Elys’ favorite food - meat and a tropical fruit she never thought she’d be able to taste again.

How did he even find out?
