Chapter 60: Eastern Borders

"Stop beating around the bush," Elys glowered at the prince, "spit it out and say it straight to my face."

The princess was apprehensive, but Aleksander seemed to be in a good mood and wasn’t making any rash moves against her. He even smiled at her; his eyes playful. Not even the kind of playful that sent children running and screaming for their mother.

But even with the prince’s better temperament, Elys knew she should never stop being vigilant.

Who knew what else he could do?

She could detect magic if she really put her mind into it, but somehow, she wasn’t able to realize she was already under his spell back there. Elysianne wanted to beat herself up for giving him a chance to slip through her own defenses.

Despite her efforts of guarding herself from his powers, Elys still fell into his trap.

She raised her chin indignantly, challenging the prince by acting as if she believed he wasn’t able to discover anything he could use against her, "Now tell me, what did you find out Prince Aleksander Ardorlean?"

The prince pondered about what Elys demanded of him. He wasn’t very keen to her aggressive approach with him, although he had accepted that she had always been like that since the very beginning. She didn’t attempt to slice his throat open for nothing!

The slave princess was a feisty woman who had a tongue as sharp as a blade.

Honestly speaking, he only gave her a very brief vision to coax her subconscious to spill what she had in mind while she was entranced. He heard her murmur things, but what really piqued his interest was not what she had mumbled, but what she had done to him whilst unconscious.

Before the prince could even decide whether to answer the princess or to play around with her more, someone cleared their throat and disrupted the two’s conversation.

"We are nearing the Eastern borders now, your highness," Teo’s voice came from the outside.

"Very well," Aleksander replied without batting an eyelash, "now begone from my window. I don’t like your face."

The vampire knight chuckled to himself and said, "Oh, you really don’t want your light to be outshined."

Teo whipped his horse to run faster, outpacing the carriage as he returned to his position at the front.

"Go faster," he told Henry who drove the carriage.

The attendant nodded and whipped his reins, making the horses speed up. The road they were taking was better for fast travel now, the grounds flatter and having fewer stray rocks that could make for a bumpy ride.

They had been travelling nonstop to make up for the lost time they had with the Black Bandits, sacrificing sleep and rest in the hopes they could reach the Eastern borders before the full moon rose.

The royal couple felt the carriage lurch forward. Elys lost her balance and almost stumbled forwards, but was thankfully able to lean her body to the back and continued with her poised but irritated facade.

"You haven’t answered me," Elys said to the prince, her eyes locked with his playful gaze, "don’t toy with me, Prince Aleksander."

The bastard prince chuckled lightly and then flashed her his pearly white set of teeth and fangs. He grinned like he was some maniac, or some sort of crazy bastard whose head was always full of deranged ideas – if not much of a sinister one.

"What is that smile for?" the princess furrowed her brows in confusion.

"Would you like to hear out a proposition?" Aleksander said, his eyes focused on Elys’ face.

"That isn’t what I want to hear right now," the princess replied, "You are changing the topic when I am asking you to answer me."

The prince scoffed, "Touché, my dear wife. How does it feel to be served with your own dose of medicine?"

Elys’ jaws stiffened, falling short for words to retort. It was particularly hard to think of something, especially when she knew that he was damn right to have pointed it out.

She herself had used such tactics to avoid a topic she wasn’t comfortable discussing. She hated to admit it, but it sucked to have been served her own dose of petty bitch energy.

Exasperated and unwilling to compromise, nor listen to what the prince had to say, Elys turned away from Aleksander and stared at the distance. The curtains of the carriage had been drawn, and all she could see was nothing but darkness.

Her window suddenly reminded Elys of the vision the prince had snuck in her brain.

The more she stared, the more did her temper worsened. She was beginning to develop an aversion to the darkness which she didn’t have a problem in the past.

Elys could still remember how the imaginary boy had withered like un uprooted plant in the desert. She knew it was all in her head, implanted by the cruel prince to test her, but still she was upset.

It felt so real.

The emotional damage that the death of an innocent gave her was beyond her imagination.

AWOOOOO~

Elys and the prince turned alert.

"Hopefully that one isn’t what I am thinking of right now," the princess aired her concern.

"The Eastern Kingdom is surrounded by a dense forest that is home to a pack of werewolves," Aleksander stated. "One way or another, we will be meeting those vile creatures down the road. Be on the lookout."

The princess held her satchel close to her. The scrolls that the king entrusted to them were inside, and they must make sure to deliver it to the Eastern Queen completely.

Elys pondered about what she could do to sabotage the mission without getting herself killed in the process. Could she find a way to get sanctuary there? What if the Eastern Queen was as ruthless as the Western vampires?

The Northern Princess wasn’t sure.

Meanwhile, the entourage of knights outside raised their defenses. Aleksander was right when he said they were going to come across the pack of werewolves enroute to the Eastern Kingdom’s castle.

That was entirely inevitable, as just a few miles up ahead, the alpha wolf already prepared his pack to welcome an enemy fast approaching.
