Chapter 49: Infatuated Moth
Chapter 49: Infatuated Moth
Elys observed the prince’s expression as he stared intently at her outstretched arm. She was confused why he hadn’t bitten her yet when she was fully aware he was already hungry.
What was that loud stomach growling for then? Surely it wasn’t just for mere show. She swore she heard it correctly that his stomach practically was begging for blood in his system.
"Would you like a straw for that?" Elys teased.
"Funny," the prince replied, sarcasm oozing from just a single word.
After what felt like a very long awkward pause, Aleksander finally pushed Elys’ hand away. The princess raised a brow in confusion. Did he just reject her?
"I thought you needed to feed?" Elys asked him. "You must drink blood or else you’d go wild again."
She didn’t even want to revisit that time the prince went ballistic. It was troublesome, if not annoying at the very least. Although if he did go wild on them right now, Elys could at least feel at ease with the other knights to help her restrain the prince.
The prince didn’t reply to her. Instead, Aleksander suddenly leaned towards the princess, making Elys reflexively back up, only to hit the hard trunk of the tree behind her.
"What are you doing?" came her question.
Her pulse quickened, but just as she usually did, Elys kept a calm face even as the prince had his face pushed too close for comfort.
"I’m doing you a favor," he replied curtly.
Elys was confused for a second.
What did he mean by doing her a favor? By rejecting her blood and abstaining? That wasn’t a favor at all to her.
It was an act that spelled disaster in the end!
Just at the moment she was about to open her mouth to ask another question, Aleksander grabbed her other hand, quickly rolled her sleeve up and brought his fangs sinking to her soft skin.
"Ah!" she gasped.
She didn’t see that one coming, and she mentally slapped herself for having her defenses lowered right after she stuffed herself full of food.
Aleksander’s fangs dug into her, and Elys felt his warm tongue glide over her skin. He sucked blood like a famished child, his eyes glowing a bright tinge of dangerous gold.
Golden orbs that were staring at her with the look of primal hunger.
Although it was still a bit awkward, the princess didn’t break the eye contact between the two of them.
If Elys hadn’t known better, she would have long been pulled into Aleksander’s mesmerizing eyes. There seemed to be something exhilarating with the way his eyes looked as they changed colors, like they were drawing her closer the longer she stared.
Just like how a moth was infatuated to the flame that would surely kill it if it came too close.
The princess caught herself thinking too much into it, and she refocused herself into the current situation.
Aleksander hadn’t fed since the party last night and immediately went to his room, all the while throwing fits and cursing his father. She understood why he was so hungry.
Elys had finally gotten used to the pain that came with the role. She was feeding the vampire prince with her own blood. In the beginning, when he drank as ravenously as he did now, Elys would soon find herself dizzy with the rapid loss of blood.
To counter such inconvenience, the princess opted to eat as much as she could to gain enough energy to last her several hours after he fed off her. She also discovered that as much as meats helped, sweets were really great for her too.
Somehow, the foods that Cordelia prepared for her turned out pretty helpful.
As Prince Aleksander lifted his mouth away from her arm, something came whizzing in their direction with high velocity. By her inborn bodily reflex, Elys tilted her body slightly in an angle, dodging the thing as it zipped past her.
THWACK!
A loud sound of something sinking itself in the tree’s trunk made Elys and Aleksander focus on the object.
"A dagger?!" Elys blurted out.
Alexander’s eyes widened and he quickly healed Elys’ arm where he bit her. He released her from his grip, and then turned his attention to the dagger that dug itself in the fire tree’s trunk.
The prince scowled.
Elys turned her head towards the direction where the blade came flying from. She squinted her eyes, trying to catch a clue on where exactly their attacker was hiding. It seemed like the knights didn’t notice, not even Teo, as they went about their own business.
Up ahead, there were trees lined up, a huge boulder on the other side, and then several thorny bushes.
Before Elys and Aleksander were even able to pinpoint the perpetrators exact spot, a piercing scream rose in the air, coupled by the frantic neighs of the horses.
"AH! ARKKHHH!!" someone shrieked, like a short scream that was more like a fusion of a struggled gurgle and a screech.
Cordelia and Henry instantly stood guard, each protecting their own masters. Cordelia was alert, whereas Henry was shaking uncontrollably, but still held his head high in vigilance.
The old woman had to give it to the attendant. He was indeed loyal to the prince just as she was loyal to the princess.
The sound of swords being unsheathed from their scabbards became apparent to everyone. The princess turned her attention towards the other knights, and her eyes widened with shock.
"Somebody attacked Neynu!" one of the knights yelled.
Her eyes stared at the fallen knight, a pool of blood beginning to spread beneath him. Elys saw the cause of his scream. Despite the armor they wore, several black arrows had struck vital points in his body.
Elys was both amazed and anxious with the precise shots.
Instinctively, the princess sensed the grave situation that they were in now. She immediately pulled the dagger from the tree and then stood alert for what was sure to be an impending second attack.
"It’s the Black Bandits!" another knight proclaimed as he checked on the arrow that hit his comrade.
’Black Bandits?’ Elys repeated in her head. ’That doesn’t sound good.’
The princess couldn’t be more accurate.
