Chapter 198: Can Realities Be Altered?
Elys took each step towards her office door with extreme caution. She was on heightened alert as she pointed the tip of her sword towards the door, and whoever it was on the other side.
The ominous killing aura that seeped from the crevices sent chills running up and down her spine. Where was her guard? Why hadn’t anyone responded when she spoke the first time?
"Who are you and what do you want?" Elys asked, "This would be the last time I ask you, for my patience wears thin and I already know you don’t want to be friends with that killing intent emanating from you."
With Elys’ words, the dark aura intensified to the point she could actually see the black mana that leaked from the door’s hinges. The doorknob suddenly rattled, as if someone was forcing their entry. A series of loud bangs almost unhinged the doors, unnervingly taking Elys by surprise.
Deciding that the matter couldn’t be resolved with words, Elys chanted a silent spell that sent a blast of white light from the tip of her sword. The doors immediately exploded upon contact, and splinters scattered.
"Kyaaa!"
Elys’ eyes blinked rapidly at the voice that cried out. As the smoke dissipated, the young queen saw no one outside her door that carried with them a dark aura. She hurried outside with her sword in hand. To her surprise, it was actually one of her ladies in waiting who seemed to have been thrown off by the explosion.
"Lady Azalea?" Elys said as she knelt down to help the lady up.
"Your majesty, no!" the lady in waiting pushed her hands forward, "You will dirty yourself. I can stand on my own."
Several footsteps echoed from the hallway, and the women turned their heads to see knights approaching.
"Where have you been? Someone just tried to attack me in my own office!" the young queen snapped at her knights.
"Your majesty..." one of the knights tried to explain, but was cut off by Elys suddenly raising her hand.
"Save your explanation when the king hears about this incident," she said, her eyes blazing with fury. "How dare you leave your posts!"
"Your majesty, it was actually I who told them to wait further away," Lady Azalea said as she pushed herself up from the floor.
Elys turned a quizzical look at the noble lady and raised a brow asking, "Why?"
She couldn’t understand the logic behind the noble vampire’s instructions to her knights. Elys’ eyes darted from side to side, searching for something that could possibly give her a clue.
’Was she planning to attack me?’ Elys speculated.
She didn’t want to accuse the vampire oit loud, for she wasn’t sure herself if it was even Lady Azalea. Elys couldn’t dare to jeopardize the only ladies in waiting that sided with her. But then again, her furious eyes locked on Lady Azalea, and the noble lady stiffened with how Elys looked at her.
"I will not ask twice, Lady Azalea," Elys said, her voice stern and demanding.
The noble vampire inhaled and then raised her chin indignantly, "It was you who ordered me, your majesty. But by the time I tried to enter your office, the doors had been jammed shut."
Elys brows arched as she heard Lady Azalea’s alibi.
"I never spoke with you until now, Lady Azalea," Elys narrowed her eyes at the vampire. "Do you mean to say I am the one lying here?"
The noble lady shook her head vigorously, "Absolutely not, your majesty!" she denied. "Even the knights had heard your own words for it."
Elys turned to the knights and they lowered their gazes as they replied in unison, "As what Lady Azalea said, your majesty, Queen Elysianne."
The young queen felt perplexed. She could never recall speaking with Lady Azalea before she felt that ominous arua that seemed out to kill her. What was the meaning of this?
"I think I need some air," Elys muttered under her voice.
Throwing the decorative sword to the ground, she turned to Lady Azalea, "Inform his majesty that I will wait for him in my chambers. And inform the other ladies that our tea party shall be moved to another day."
"As you wish, your majesty," Lady Azalea curtsied.
The noble vampire turned to hasten towards Aleksander’s office. But before she could even reach the exit of Elys’ office hallways, the young king himself came unannounced.
"Your majesty!" Lady Azalea stopped in her tracks, "What do you come here for?"
"I am not deaf, Lady Azalea, I heard the explosion," he scowled, "Now step aside."
Aleksander pushed the lady in waiting as he walked in haste, practically almost running towards Elys’ office. As he reached the crime scene, his eyes turned towards his wife’s shocked face. Aleksander reached out his hand and pulled her in a tight hug.
"A-Aleksander, this isn’t necessary," Elys tried to insist. "It’s unbecoming of a king to be like this. You will lose face in front of your subjects!"
"Don’t tell me how I should worry for my queen, wife," Aleksander frowned. "Am I not supposed to worry about you? You are the most important person to me, even before myself."
His eyes turned a dangerous golden shade as he stared at the wreckage of his wife’s office door. The door was clearly shattered into oblivion, leaving nothing but tiny broken splinters scattered across the floor.
"What happened, wife? I came as soon as I heard the explosion," he asked as Elys finally succeeded in making him let go from the hug.
"I felt an ominous aura coming off my door several minutes after I ordered Cordelia a few errands," Elys replied, "the killing intent and dark energy seeped into the office, and the doors started baging. Nobody replied when I asked who it was amd I decided to attack immediately."
Elys bit her lip and Aleksander saw the confusion in her eyes. He turned to the knights who stood guard, and flicked an impatient finger for one of them to come forward.
The knight stepped forward, one of his hand pressed to his chest as he knelt down and said, "Your majesty..."
"Explain what happened here," Aleksander glared at him.
The knight tried to speak, but Aleksander was too impatient and decided to just pry into the vampire’s mind. He was supposed to get mad at their incompetence, but what he learned from the knight’s mind confused him.
"Your majesty, we were just following Queen Elysianne’s orders to go further up the hallway as Lady Azalea spoke with her," the knight explained. "The next thing we knew, the doors exploded and Lady Azalea was thrown off by the blast."
Aleksander was lost for words. No wonder his wife looked confused. The knight’s memories felt real, and Aleksander didn’t notice any tampering magic that might have changed the knight’s perception.
"Aleksander, I need to speak with you alone," Elys said as she tugged at her husband’s sleeve.
The vampire king nodded and dismissed the knight.
"Go inform the servants to replace the office door right away, as well as repair any other damages," Aleksander ordered him.
"Right away, your majesty," the knight replied and then immediately scurried off.
"And one last thing," Aleksander said, making the knights face him, "not a word shall spread about this incident, or else it will be your heads rolling, am I clear?"
"Yes, your majesty!" the knights pressed a hand to their chest in reply.
Aleksander grabbed Elys’ hand, and he started to walk out of the hallway and towards his office at the other side. The walk was eerily silent, and the atmosphere was heavy.
Elys couldn’t find a word to speak as the two of them passed by servants who cowered in fear as they saw Aleksander’s face. When they arrived at his office, Aleksander locked the doors and turned.
"Elys, are you alright?" he asked her, his brows arched in worry.
"I don’t know Aleksander," she rubbed her temple. "All I know is that what I felt back there was real. I couldn’t have hallucinated all of it - I was wide awake!"
The young king reached a hand to tap her back. Seeing her worried face, Aleksander pulled her in his arms and hugged her tightly, "I believe you, my queen. I believe you. Don’t be distressed, we will see to what really happened back there."
"I don’t know what the reason was," Elys said, "but I swear that ominous aura was real, Aleksander. And it is here in the palace, hiding in plain sight. But it is here, I know it is."
"Did you notice anyone else during that time, my queen?" Aleksander asked.
He led her towards the couch, and they both sat down as he caressed her face. "Tell me, Elys. I will make sure to catch anyone who dares to harm you."
The young queen lifted an awkward smile and replied, "As it turned out, as Azalea and the knights said, I was talking to them when I blasted the door open. I don’t know, Aleksander. Could there be any magic that can do that? Alter realities and perception?"
