Chapter 190: A Price To Pay
Chapter 190: A Price To Pay
Aleksander bolted for Elys the moment he heard her took another step towards her chambers. The vampire put all his strength into his feet, and jumped literally ten steps up so he could block his Queen from escaping him.
The young King had an evil grin plastered to his face, to which Elys didn’t appreciate.
"Get out of my way, King Aleksander," she said as a ball of light energy started to gather around her open palms.
It was meant as a warning to her vampire husband, yet Aleksander’s grin only turned wider and cockier.
Her magic began at the tips of her fingers, like tiny fireflies dancing around her hands. Aleksander understood she was vexed about what he said to the High Courts. They actually didn’t have the time to actually discuss it.
There was indeed that time during their first night at the shared chambers that Aleksander joked about the topic, but Elys didn’t pay attention to which he ultimately decided to let the topic go.
And although he believed the subject about royal heirs was embarrassing of a lie to say to their subjects during a meeting meant to address a calamity, he thought that it was absolutely necessary.
How else would they shut up with their worries of an heir if the King and Queen were not supposed to soothe them with an assurance they were trying?
"My queen, we can talk this over," Aleksander spoke, his eyes boring into Elys’ blazing rubies.
Elysianne recalled that Aleksander’s magic was entirely dependent on eye contact, and the young queen steered her eyes away from his gaze.
She knew what he was capable of, and Aleksander’s face looked as if he was ready to do anything to stop Elys from walking away.
But then again, it was already too late.
The young queen turned rigid, and although to everyone else she looked as if she had fainted, the truth was that Aleksander was only making it look like she fell into his arms.
Quite flawlessly too.
"Your majesty," one of the ladies in waiting came closer, "is her majesty the queen alright?"
"She just fainted," Aleksander lied, "must have been the heat and smoke from this morning’s fire."
"But she seemed alright when she returned soon after," Lady Azalea wondered. "Anyways, we can take care of her, your majesty. You can hand her over to us ladies."
The noble lady reached out her hands as if she had the strength to actually carry Elys in her arms. Lady Penelope put her arms forward as well, copying her friend’s gesture. Lady Tabitha clicked her tongue behind them and hissed at Azalea’s ears.
"You aren’t reading the situation right, Lady Azalea!" the vampire scowled.
"What am I supposed to do then, huh? A lady in waiting is responsible of taking care of the Queen’s needs," she retorted.
"Um... l-ladies... I-I d-don’t think you sh-sh-should be f-f-fighting in front of th-the King," Lady Penelope meekly tried to mediate between the two.
Their whispers rising and oblivious to the fact that their king was too close of a distance not to hear.
"Now, now, ladies," Aleksander said as he lifted Elys and carried her like a tiny princess in his strong arms. "I can handle my wife. You be off to your own chambers now."
Lady Tabitha resisted the urge to squeal. The idea of the King and Queen’s relationship intensifying with the act of trying to conceive and heir made her stomach feel queasy.
She pulled Lady Azalea and Penelope back, and then bowed at Aleksander as she said, "Of course, your majesties. We will be one call away if you need anything at all. Have a good night ahead."
"Knights, off to your stations," the young king ordered his men.
The knights saluted and went on to march to their assigned areas. A few stayed to accompany Aleksander and Elys to whichever chambers they were going to use.
Aleksander gave a satisfied smile and his piercing golden eyes sought Cordelia and Henry. The two were only a few steps behind the ladies in waiting and the knights, and soon after a few seconds reached Aleksander and Elys.
"Cordelia, go with the ladies in waiting and bring over Elys’ nightgown. We will be at the shared chambers," he instructed.
The old woman’s face was taken aback. She didn’t realize Aleksander was actually being serious about any royal heirs at all. She turned to take a peek at Elys’ face, but Aleksander made sure her face was buried in his chest, but giving her enough space to breath properly.
"Is she alright?" Cordelia worried.
"Yes, she is just tired," Aleksander blatantly lied to her face. He turned towards Henry who stood beside the maidservant and said, "Henry, I don’t think I have sent an instruction for you to come here yet."
The old man bowed his head and apologized, "I am terribly sorry, your majesty. I had a valid reason to have come without the notice. I think you would want to hear it out."
The young king raised a brow at Henry and then said, "Very well. I will speak with you as soon as my queen is settled down."
Aleksander started to walk towards the corridor leading to his and Elys’ shared chambers. Cordelia followed the ladies in waiting back to the Queen’s chambers, whereas the remaining knights and Henry accompanied the royal couple.
As soon as they arrived at the shared chambers, the knights pushed the heavy doors open and Aleksander stepped inside with Elys in his arms. Henry followed him inside and the doors closed immediately thereafter.
King Aleksander put Elys down gently on their bed, and then turned towards Henry. The old attendant had immediately set the hearth aflame, lighted several other lamps, and then closed off the balcony doors.
When he was all done, Henry turned to Aleksander and the two fell silent.
As if by cue, a knock arrived shortly and the ladies in waiting brought over the most sheer nightgown Aleksander has ever saw. Does it even count as clothing if you could practically see through it as if nothing was there in the first place?
The young king covered half of his face as he suddenly felt hot inside. He didn’t really mean to actually start trying for a royal heir, but once he imagined his queen in the thin nightgown, a primal hunger started to rise in him.
"Your majesty, we brought what you asked," Lady Tabitha said, flushed to the ears.
"I have brought an extra should you prefer another nightgown," Cordelia added.
The lady in waiting scowled in displeasure. She didn’t like that the lowly maidservant was trying to contest her taste in proper nightgowns for a special occassion.
"Cordelia, you stay and dress the queen," Aleksander spoke in a mumble.
The old woman smirked at Lady Tabitha, and the vampire couldn’t do anything but to follow orders.
After Lady Tabitha and the other ladies in waiting exited the shared chambers, Cordelia drew the bed’s canopy for privacy, lifted Elys’ limp body, and then changed her swiftly.
Once she was done, Cordelia opened the canopies again, and Aleksander could see Elys completely changed. The maidservant carried her neatly folded dress, and then walked to stand beside Henry, waiting for further instructions.
The young king suddenly recalled what he was about to say before the ladies in waiting arrived.
"What did you want to say, Henry?" Aleksander asked him, his eyes serious and anticipating the worst from the old attendant.
Henry fished out the broken glass vial Elys had handed over to him this morning, and Aleksander lifted a brow. He was curious what this was about as well, and he was glad that Henry disregarded the fact that he was not summoned and quickly came back to the palace to report something important.
"I have successfully identified this object, my King," he said, "would her majesty, Queen Elysianne, want to hear it too?"
Aleksander recalled the fact that he had put Elys under a quick dream when he caught her. He sheepishly turned to see Elys stiff as a log on the bed. With a snap of a finger, Elys inhaled sharply as if she was drowning and was desperate to taste air in her lungs again.
"What the hell...?!" Elys muttered under her voice.
One moment she had been trying to threaten Aleksander into stepping away from her, and then the next thing she knew she was already in their shared chambers.
On the bed nonetheless!
"Forgive me, my queen," Aleksander knelt down the side of the bed and continued, "but the necessity was clear. I had to restrain you or else we would lose face in front of the nobles."
Elys rolled her eyes and instead of getting angry, realized that Aleksander was actually right. But acknowledging the other was right didn’t mean that she forgave him with his actions afterwards.
There was a price to pay for him deceiving her and putting her under his magic.
