Chapter 179: Cordelia’s Report

Cordelia scowled at Lady Beatrice. The noble vampire raised her chin and looked down on the old woman. She knew that Cordelia had no power over her, but she just loved to see the woman’s displeased face.

"Sir Knight, may I visit the King Aleksander and Queen Elysianne after they are done dining?" Lady Beatrice asked.

The knight’s smile faded and lowered his head.

"I am very sorry, milady," he said, "but King Aleksander had made it clear that he wanted no visitors. The only ones who could go to the Rose Palace right now are those who serve there."

This time around, Lady Beatrice’s proud face was washed away. She heard Cordelia smirk beside her.

To make things worse, the maidservant made sure to bump into her shoulder as she walked past the noble vampire.

"Ah, my bad," Cordelia faked a sorry face.

The old woman gave the vampire a side glance, and she gloated at Lady Beatrice’s reaction. Her hands had turned into infuriated fists, and her once beautiful face wrinkled with disgust.

Cordelia waved at the knight as she passed him by. She heard the vampire murmur something towards Lady Beatrice, and when she turned around the corner, she saw that he had accompanied the noble lady back to the main palace.

The maidservant made her way towards her shortcut into the garden. The flowers that bloomed were exquisite, telling the grandeur as well as setting the immense difference in wealth from the capital to the outskirts of the kingdom.

Wind blew softly as the stars above twinkled without care. Like most of the aristocratic blood in the capital, the stars above were oblivious to the plight of many others outside the capital walls.

The garden gave Cordelia some peace and quiet to reflect on her troubled mind.

’The Eastern Kingdom is plotting something against the Western Kingdom... the Northern people will be torn yet again in another conflict we didn’t want,’ she thought to herself.

As Cordelia emerged into the other side of the maze-like garden, Cordelia saw Elys’ ladies in waiting pass by.

She knew that the noble vampires that had taken their side were two-faced and only wanted to elevate themselves from the bottom. One of them saw Cordelia, and even though they knew the old woman was more trusted compared to them, they didn’t give her the respect she deserved.

Even as a person.

’Vampires...’ Cordelia scowled.

The ladies in waiting giggled when the old woman stared back at them. They gave her a side-eye that clearly meant to ridicule her, but Cordelia wasn’t in the mood to be bullied.

She already clashed with a noble tonight; it wouldn’t make a difference if she challenged the others as well.

However, Cordelia recalled how Elys had been so ecstatic to have gained the ladies as her supporters. If the old woman was to pick a fight with them, it would only make the ladies resent her, and maybe even decide to leave Elysianne.

"Well, if it isn’t Queen Elysianne’s trusted maidservant," Countess Rusiana snickered.

The other ladies followed suit with the countess’ insulting laugh. Cordelia kept mum, but her hand was itching to pull a punch at all of them.

’Ah... maybe just a little bit,’ she convinced herself.

Cordelia walked towards them, and the noble vampires’ giggling slowly turned into silence. Countess Rusiana who was the most vocal of the four threw Cordelia a dirty look. It was as if she was looking at trash.

"What do you want?" she scoffed at the old woman. She wasn’t stupid enough not to notice the human’s shaking fists beside her. "You aren’t thinking of picking a fight with us, right?"

The old woman raised her head and unclenched her fists. Out of the blue, Cordelia flashed them a smile, and the ladies were taken aback.

"T-That is s-s-so cre-creepy," the shortest of them, Lady Penelope stuttered.

The old woman tilted her head and opened her eyes. She looked left and right, and noted that there were no one else within the hallways. Without waiting for another word said, Cordelia flicked her right hand and threw a punch at Countess Rusiana.

Her fist didn’t really connect, but it was enough to shock them to say the least. Cordelia knew the right distance her arm could reach.

The only thing that would make her attack seem dangerous was because her punch gathered enough force to actually push the air around her. A tiny whiff lifted Countess Rusiana’s hair, and that was enough for Cordelia.

The noble vampire was quick enough to back away from Cordelia’s attack, and the others hissed at Cordelia, their fangs showing. Lady Penelope released electric shocks from her body, and even though she looked the weakest, Cordelia knew she was quite dangerous as well.

"How dare you throw a punch at a noble woman with my status?" Countess Rusiana glared at Cordelia. "Do you think that just because you are closest to the Queen you could stand where we stand in this kingdom?"

"I may be just a human, but I deserve respect as much as you deem yourself respectable," Cordelia said.

She turned around and walked away. Cordelia was lucky enough that the ladies in waiting were not quick to pick a fight, still choosing to remain dignified looking in the name of pretense and fakery.

Cordelia turned the corner and her steps eventually led her towards the dining hall of the Rose Palace. Knights were stationed just outside, and she knew that Elys and Aleksander were still inside.

She approached the door, and the knights were quick to block her from taking any further steps forward.

"King Aleksander doesn’t want anyone to bother him and the Queen Elysianne," the knight explained.

"Have they been there for too long?" she asked.

"Not exactly, but nearly an hour probably," the other knight replied.

Cordelia bowed at them and then said, "Very well. I will be waiting then."

The knights relaxed as Cordelia stepped away from the door. By the time that twenty minutes have passed by, even the knights were sharing questioning glances at each other.

"They are taking far too long," Cordelia muttered under her voice. "What could they be doing?"

Just as Cordelia was going to suggest to the knights to let her knock and ask to be met, the dining halls’ doors opened, and out came the King and Queen of the Western Kingdom.

Elys’ face looked a bit flushed, as well as Aleksander’s.

This raised a question in Cordelia’s mind, thinking that it was strange for them to look as such. She couldn’t help but worry for Elys’ sake, and by the time that their eyes have met, Elys was quick to put on her usual mask of indifference.

"Greetings, your majesties, King Aleksander and Queen Elysianne," Cordelia smiled as she curtsied.

"Cordelia! You are back," the young queen said.

The old woman noticed the slight change in her tone, and although she wanted to ask immediately what had bothered her, Cordelia held herself back. She would save the question when she and Elys were just the only ones talking.

Although Aleksander had improved quite a lot, Cordelia still could not find herself trusting the vampire. He had been so cruel and incorrigible for too long that the old woman wasn’t that much convinced he was changing wholeheartedly.

’Does he even have heart?’ she asked herself.

"Your majesty, I have returned to give you my report," Cordelia said to Elys.

Her face turned serious and then said, "Very well, let us go to my office and discuss what you have brought for us."

The old woman stepped aside and let Elys and Aleksander walked past her. She let them lead several paces before she finally followed them behind.

Cordelia couldn’t help but to notice the subtle things that changed with Elys since she had become Queen of the Vampires. Aleksander was excessively showing her attention as well, becoming too possessive even to the point of making Elys share a room with him all the time.

Although they were only working together through an agreement, Cordelia still couldn’t help but to feel apprehension whenever the couple pretended in front of the public. Much more when she sees Aleksander show Elys affection when they are alone.

It deemed to be quite alarming to Cordelia.

"Alright," Elys said as she and Aleksander sat down on the couch of her office. Her eyes turned towards Cordelia and then asked, "what have you got?"

The old woman straightened her back and began reporting Sir Noa’s activities since he left the palace. Elys and Aleksander listened in carefully, making a few reactions here and there as Cordelia reported Sir Noa’s movements.

"So, he really just came alone," Elys hummed as she rubbed her knuckles on her temple.

"It seemed like so," Cordelia confirmed. "I only tracked him until a few kilometers from the Western Kingdom’s borders. But there is one thing that I found alarming."

Elys and Aleksander turned rigid.

"What is it?" Elys whispered.

Cordelia stared at the young queen and then replied, "Sir Noa had met with someone from the vampire clergy."
