Chapter 154: Disappointment
Chapter 154: Disappointment
Aleksander’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets. He did not expect Elys to agree with him like that – it was far too surprising! Was it because he had apologized sincerely back then with his undesirable actions?
He felt like he was slowly learning more of how to win Elys’ good side.
Slash those stupid things he did back then, communication was the right thing to do.
"That is wonderful, my queen!" he said as a wide smile beamed from his face. He reached out for both of Elys’ hands and then added, "Thank you so much for agreeing with me. I promise not to be rash with my decisions."
"As you should," Elys said.
Aleksander nodded with instant agreement. If he really wanted to win her, he must do things that she would appreciate. It was quite a chore, but he was much willing to bend a few things from his usual to get what he wanted.
And he wanted Elys to always be by his side.
"But you did mention you are going to read before going to bed, would you want to get a book in your chambers first?" he recalled.
"Ah, I do have a book in mind," she hummed. "I shall retrieve it. You can wait for me here, and we can go together."
Aleksander shook his head and said, "I will come with you."
Elys heaved an exasperated sigh, "Alright then. Suit yourself."
The vampire who had used to hate her so much has now turned into a child desperately clinging on to her. At times she had thought that all of his interactions with her were faked to just get along as much as she had pretended.
But the longer they spent time together, the more she noticed that he was being genuine. Had the tough armor and hostility before just a by-product of the way he lived in isolation?
Perhaps it was.
And right at this moment, maybe she was beginning to truly believe that change was possible for Aleksander.
"Your majesty!" someone called out to them from behind, "Where did you go off to?"
Elys and Aleksander turned around to see Sir Damiano and Baron Ruiz. The king raised a brow at the two of them and they lowered their heads in response.
"We just went out for a bit," Aleksander lied. "Why didn’t you follow accordingly?"
"Sir Damiano and I have tried to," Baron Ruiz explained.
Aleksander’s brow raised higher as if to ask, ’And what else?’
Surely they could have tracked the king and queen as they did stay a few minutes in the vacant guest room a while ago. With Baron Ruiz’s excellent hearing, he should have been able to lead Sir Damiano and himself to where Elys and Aleksander had been.
The vampire king turned suspicious.
There was definitely something wrong with their alibi. Had they followed Elys and Aleksander but stayed covert to eavesdrop on their conversations?
’The palace needs to be eradicated with pests,’ Aleksander reminded himself. ’I will need to weed out people slowly, ensuring that only those that are loyal or at the least fear me shall stay.’
"Very well," Aleksander straightened his back, his eyes almost shifting into piercing golden orbs but returned to his silver pools a split second later, "You two are relieved of your duties."
"For the night, your majesty?" Sir Damiano asked.
Aleksander smiled at them and responded, "For the night, gentlemen. The queen is safe with me. But be as lax as you were tonight and I will personally relieve you from this world - permanently."
He made sure to make a grand pause before he uttered the last word that was meant to be a warning for the two knights.
The young king knew they were never loyal to him, and although he wanted to get rid of them, Sir Damiano and Baron Ruiz were perfect baits to the opposing ex-candidate to the throne.
With that said and done, Aleksander smugly turned around, and whistled as he swung his arm around Elys’ shoulder and the two of them made their way to her chambers.
Sir Damiano and Baron Ruiz were left behind, their jaws dropping to the ground with how nonchalant and simple the bastard king threatened them with a kind mask.
After Elys and Aleksander were out of earshot, Sir Damiano finally reacted and let out a low grumble.
"Tch!" the knight clicked his tongue in disapproval.
"Control yourself, Damiano," Baron Ruiz stopped him before he could even grumble some more.
The burly man dragged the other down the stairs, his face wary of the distance that he needed to get between them and the royal couple. Sir Damiano did not protest, but he grumbled on his way down, mumbling incoherently.
"Shut up, or else you will be heard, idiot!" Baron Ruiz said.
They hurried off down the endless flight of stairs down. As soon as Baron Ruiz was sure that they were far enough, and assuming the bastard king was preoccupied with his queen, only then did he slow down.
"What’s up with you?" Sir Damiano asked. "You ran as if your life depended on it."
Baron Ruiz turned to Sir Damiano, and right there smacked his head with his fist.
"I did that because your life depended on it, boy!" he said with a rushed whisper. "I don’t think you are that stupid to forget that the young Ardorlean can read minds, and you were grumbling so loud he would have heard your head blasting him with whatever you were thinking then."
Sir Damiano closed his mouth and muttered and apology to Baron Ruiz.
"He seemed to have let it pass, but never lower your guard around the king," the older knight reminded Sir Damiano.
The two knights walked out of the monarch’s and guests’ residence building, and went off towards the opposite building where the palace knight’s office was. As they entered the building, a familiar man was waiting for them.
His face wasn’t happy, and the man said, "You disappoint me."
