Chapter 128: Curious
High Priestess Naya still haven’t met all the Noble House Heads. But one thing was already sure – Sir Wiriam had infiltrated the inner circles of the bastard king.
Gizem had met the young master on her way to the vampire clergy, which was why High Priestess Naya rushed to the palace. She wanted to meet Sir Wiriam, but it seemed like he wasn’t around when she arrived.
"What are you doing here, High Priestess?" Elys asked, her tone flat.
The High Priestess Naya tutted, "You don’t seem to like me here, Queen Elysianne. But the vampire clergy has rights to the Hallowed Chambers. It is only natural for me visit when I want to."
"On the contrary, your presence is an advantage," Elys responded coolly. "Quite a coincidence as it is, my husband and I wanted to enter, but it seems your company is needed."
High Priestess Naya smiled, her dark deep-set eyes glinting with amusement. She turned to the sentries and said, "Let us through. The King and Queen of the Western Kingdom wants to see the Hallowed Chambers."
Right there and then, the sentries stepped aside from the doors. High Priestess Naya procured a golden key with intricate designs, inserted it and unlocked the doors. After unlocking the doors, the two sentries immediately started to push.
Once the Hallowed Chambers’ doors were wide open, the sentries bowed down to the High Priestess, and then to the King and Queen.
Aleksander didn’t like the way they bowed to the High Priestess first before him and his wife. It was only Elys’ grip on his hand that stopped him from speaking it out loud. Her eyes glanced at him and squinted.
"Let it be, husband," Elys whispered.
Aleksander grunted in disapproval and then responded, "Fine... if you say so."
High Priestess Naya thanked the sentries and went forward. Aleksander and Elys followed her, and after several paces forward, they heard the doors close with a heavy thud.
The dark chambers immediately lightened up as lamps started to automatically turn on.
Up ahead, the chambers were littered with a collection of portraits. From small to large, all kinds of shapes as well. Some were bejeweled and adorned with intricate frames, others simple and plain.
The pictures painted in them were all unique from one another. Elys was confused, and her eyes turned to Aleksander for an explanation.
Aleksander’s reaction towards what the room contained turned the expectant look in Elys into a frown. As frustrating as it was, it seemed as if it was his first time inside the chamber as well.
Elys turned to look at the High Priestess’ back as she arrived at the center of the room. She had thought the Hallowed Chambers kept a lot of records. But why did it only contain a vast collection of portraits?
Was there something Elys was missing?
"I do think we haven’t been properly introduced to one another, your majesty," High Priestess Naya stopped in her tracks. She faced Elys and then said, "I am Naya Elnua, High Priestess of the vampire clergy."
Elys nodded in acknowledgement. She already researched about the vampire clergy, and the High Priestess Naya was one of those she thought was a curious case.
"I am Elysianne," was Elys’ only reply.
High Priestess Naya raised a brow at her curt introduction. She pressed further, trying to hunt for any information she could use against the new human queen herself.
"And where do you hail, my queen? Your magic," she paused and made a grand gesture, "it blew us the first time we saw it last night. Quite literally too."
"I am from a far away kingdom," Elys responded to the High Priestess, "but it is no longer."
Aleksander noticed Elys’ reluctance to respond in full to the High Priestess’ unsolicited prodding. Her face was blank, but her whole body was tensed up to the point Aleksander thought she would have ended up reaching for the High Priestess’ throat any moment.
"Ah," High Priestess Naya put a finger to her lips in contemplation. "I apologize for asking. I am dearly saddened by such. I hope you find the Western Kingdom welcoming."
Elysianne raised a brow.
"You dare say such a thing knowing your kind had taken me as a slave?" Elys spoke, her voice raising in anger. "I don’t pretend what I was before I came in this place, High Priestess. I expect you to choose your words wisely, and perhaps give respect where it is due."
"My apologies, your majesty. I have stepped over the line," High Priestess Naya lowered her head, "As an apology, I will assist you inside the Hallowed Chambers. So, what exactly do you want to see in here, your majesties?"
"We wanted to learn, that is all," Elys responded. "I asked my husband I wanted to better myself as Queen of all the vampires."
"And his majesty," the High Priestess turned to Aleksander. "What do you want to know, King Aleksander Ardorlean?"
The young king squinted his silver eyes at the High Priestess. Her question might have sounded harmless to an ordinary person, but to Aleksander and his distrustful mind, the High Priestess was definitely trying to bait him into saying he wanted to see the late queen’s visions regarding him.
The accusations of the late Queen Zephyrine to be exact.
"I am only accompanying my wife," Aleksander finally responded to her question.
"My, oh, my," High Priestess Naya chuckled. "Such a wonderful husband you are to be so... doting to the Queen Elysianne, your majesty."
"I try to be the husband she deserves," Aleksander responded.
"Marvelous," the High Priestess smiled.
She turned to Elys and then offered her hand. At first Elys was confused what to do. She hesitated for several seconds, but then accepted High Priestess Naya’s outstretched hands.
"What would you like to know particularly, my queen?" the High Priestess asked her.
The vampire gently guided Elys to one of the biggest portraits inside the Hallowd Chambers. She waved a hand, a trail of purplish glow emanating from it. The portrait started to move about, the woman inside of it bowing down to greet them.
"Ask the portrait what you want, your majesty," she instructed Elys.
