Chapter 122: Plans and Surprises

"Are you hungry?" Elys asked Aleksander as she flicked over books Cordelia had brought for her.

After Aleksander showed her the vision of his past, Elys somehow felt like she was finally starting to understand the vampire’s cynical ways when they first met.

He was deprived of the love he was supposed to get when he was so young.

To be thrown into a dungeon and tortured until his soul broke was more than just horrendous. And to think he had been a child back then!

"Actually, I am a bit famished," Aleksander spoke. "I haven’t slept yet, and its already well past nine in the morning."

"Well then, come over here and feed, husband," Elys beckoned him.

Aleksander walked towards her and sat down. Back then, Elys would have used a dagger to wound herself, but somehow the two of them came to a habit that it was quicker if Aleksander just immediately bit her with his fangs.

Elys pulled her sleeves until she revealed her bare arm to him, and Aleksander’s fangs bared in an instant.

The hunger in his golden eyes was undeniable.

"Drink now, husband," Elys said. "And if you want, you can take a quick nap. I will wake you when the sun is down."

"You know, I had thought of killing Lady Catalina last night," Aleksander suddenly chatted. "But your words ringed inside my head the very moment I was about to grab the lady in waiting’s neck and snap it."

Elys was just about to reply, but Aleksander had already dug into her skin, and she felt the sharp pain of his fangs pierce her flesh. Blood began to flow from the wound his fangs created, and Elys felt her face burn.

If Aleksander was looking at her now, he would see that her face was a bit flushed by the sensation of his mouth on her arm early in the morning.

"You flatter me," Elys finally replied after several seconds of trying to calm herself down. She couldn’t help a bit of sarcasm ooze in her voice, and somehow Aleksander noted it as well.

Despite the two of them starting to become closer as they bared their hurt to each other, Elys was still a bit uncomfortable with his attempts to praise her.

"We will make use of her," Aleksander then replied as he licked his lips from feeding off her blood, "Have someone tail Lady Catalina, and we will be able to determine who she is working with, no matter if she knew them directly or not."

"I will tell Cordelia to do so herself," Elys said, "she is more than adept to do the mission."

Aleksander’s eyebrow raised a bit, "Your maidservant? Well, I did notice she exceeds most knights in physical combat. Would a tall and broad woman like her be able to stay covert?"

Elys smirked, "You might not be familiar with Cordelia, but if she hadn’t insisted on serving the Whitecasters, she would have been one of the most elite generals of our military forces."

"Fascinating," her husband smiled, "very well then. Have Cordelia do the job. But then, who can you trust as your lady in waiting? Surely you will need help within the castle."

His queen shook her head, "I don’t need many. I will only select a few of the remaining ladies in waiting to serve me."

Aleksander’s face immediately twisted with her idea.

He had been adamant that Elys and him stay in their shared bedchamber because he wanted to make sure she was safe himself. The Queen’s chambers were settled at the opposite side of the King’s, but Aleksander didn’t want to take chances.

"I don’t trust the remaining vampire noble women, my queen. They might try to hurt like Lady Catalina did," he frowned.

His thick raven hair was swept backwards, giving way for his face to be more visible with their burning bedside lamps. This made his expressions easier for her to read. Every crease of his forehead, twitch of his eyes, even the way he sometimes breathed too loudly.

"Worry not," Elys shushed Aleksander, putting a finger on his partly opened lips about to protest some more, "I have a plan."

She couldn’t help but feel a bit of laughter rising within her. Why did the vampire in front of her seemed like he was genuinely concerned?

Wasn’t he just doing it because he needed the advantage of her power?

Aleksander’s brows were already high enough, but her husband’s brow raised higher with every second Elys didn’t give further explanation on her plan.

Elys could feel his eyes staring at her intently, waiting for her detailed description on what she actually wanted to do. She released a deep sigh, and then turned away from Aleksander so her eyes were staring at the distance.

"I will have Lady Catalina’s enemies become my ladies in waiting," she finally said, "They do say to keep your friends close, your enemies closer, and the enemies of your enemies closest."

"Do you mean to say that you want enemy vampire nobilities to serve you, those same nobilities that wanted us out the very second that we sat down?" Aleksander asked.

"Hmm," Aleksander hummed, still a bit unconvinced. "I still don’t think that those vultures would do you any good, my queen."

"It would be the fastest way to get me accustomed to the vampire society, my king," she retorted. "I will get those that didn’t like Lady Catalina, and then gradually add several human nobilities from my people as well," Elys smiled.

"Ah, speaking of your people, I have a plan as well to liberate them from slavery without enraging the rest of the vampire kingdom," Aleksander added.

Elys’ heart suddenly beat faster. It was the first time Aleksander had ever mentioned a solid plan about her demands. Her mind rushed over the idea of her people free again – what a delight it would be!

"And that is?" she asked, trying to prompt him to spill further what he had in mind.

The young king turned to Elys, his eyes full of sparks, "We will stage a rebellion and provide them with magical weapons."

Elys’ face turned sour immediately.

"Too dangerous," his wife waved a dismissing hand, "they will not be able to win if any of the vampire nobilities use their magic against them."

"Ah, that wouldn’t happen," the young king spoke, a cunning look in his face.

"And why would that be?" she asked him as she crossed her arms.

"Don’t you have any trust in your people’s strength?" Aleksander challenged Elys. He propped his chin on his hand, and then added, "Your kingdom had hundreds of infamous warriors, surely if they are given the chance, I know they would definitely want to kill a few vampires themselves."

Elys mulled over the idea.

Aleksander noticed she was deep in thought, and he patted her head in jokingly, "Don’t worry too much about it for now, wife. We will be preparing for that first thing when the sun sets today."

"What kind of preparation do you mean, your majesty, King Aleksander?" Elys asked, her brows raising higher with curiosity.

Aleksander leaned towards Elys’ side of the bed and whispered, "Because by then, the vampire nobilities will lose their magical capabilities."

"They will what?!" Elys gasped.

The shocked look in Elys’ face made Aleksander chuckle in amusement.

It was clear that she was skeptical about what he said, but he didn’t explain more. He already had Henry procure what he needed for his plan to succeed when they had the canopies fixed earlier.

It needed a bit of underhanded tricks to be executed, but he was sure that his trusted attendant was well accustomed to that.

Henry might have been quite a wimp compared to the brute force Cordelia offered, but the old man knew all the ins and outs of the vampire kingdom. With more wealth and power in hand, the old man could definitely pull off some strings from certain... acquaintances.

"What do you plan, husband?" Elys whispered.

She still sat at the edge of the bed.

Elys was still a bit uncomfortable that they had to share because Aleksander didn’t trust she could be on her own. She hoped it was just something of the meantime, as she never did agree on becoming close in terms of intimacy with the vampire.

Her husband chuckled once more, and then turned said, "You will see later."

Elys was a bit concerned that Aleksander wasn’t explaining to her in detail the things he had planned for the day.

"Is this some kind of a surprise then?" she asked him.

Aleksander only winked at Elys and said, "Trust me, it will be something you would love."

The vampire king started to pull the canopies shut from his side of the bed, "Close the canopies on your side, wife," he said, and then shimmied his way under the blankets.

Elys got out of bed and closed the curtains from their windows as well.

She looked back at the bed, and somehow, she found herself anticipating what Aleksander prepared for this afternoon’s meeting with the High Vampire Court.
