Chapter 112: She’d Rather Be Assassinated

"Wife?"

Elys jolted as she heard the prince’s – the king’s rather – voice. She turned to look at Aleksander seated on the bed.

"What is in your mind?" Aleksander asked.

His wife paced the room and bit her nails, "It just feels so surreal. Am I really the Queen of the kingdom that pillaged my own? What would my people think of me?"

The Northern Warrior Princess couldn’t believe she just rose to the status of Queen in just one night. All the more was the fact that now she was the Queen of the Western Kingdom whose people were cruel vampires.

The prince put down his crown and got out of bed.

"Elysianne," Aleksander whispered as he reached out towards his queen, "didn’t I promise you that we’d take this kingdom apart? That I would set your people free and punish those that have wronged you and I both?"

Elys’ eyes locked on Aleksander’s, "You did say all of those."

She stepped away from the newly crowned vampire king. Elys walked out into the balcony of their shared chamber, and then sat over the stone banister.

Cold wind blew from the east, and the newly crowned queen herself couldn’t help but shiver. Elys heard a slight rustle behind her, and then as she turned around, her eyes fell on the concerned face of Aleksander.

"I thought you weren’t bothered with the cold?" he asked.

Elys recalled she herself came from a kingdom where there was snow a third of the year. King Aleksander was right to assume she was accustomed to the cold already.

"I didn’t shiver," she denied as she put on her most stoic face. "I just had a thought cross my mind."

"And that would be?" Aleksander tried to ask further.

"When are Cordelia and Henry coming?" she asked Aleksander instead of answering his question.

Elys didn’t want to admit that she felt overwhelmed by the events that happened so far. She still felt the immense pressure that welled inside her as she released that explosion spell back then.

The sheer amount of concentration it took her not to burn the whole castle drained her mentally. She knew Aleksander said she could let lose, but Elys thought there might be slaves and human servants present, and she couldn’t dare to include them as collateral damage.

Aleksander noticed his wife’s quick change of topic. His watchful eyes glanced at her, worried of what she was running inside her head.

This was perhaps one of the moments he desperately wanted to read her mind.

Come to think of it, why couldn’t he? Perhaps it was Elys’ innate strong magical powers preventing him from taking a peek in her mind.

He could try to stimulate a response from her with a vision, but he didn’t want to get into her bad side yet again. Aleksander wasn’t going to do the same mistake again.

He was too afraid to lose the only support he ever trusted aside from his loyal attendant.

Speaking of servants, it was also noteworthy that he could read Cordelia’s mind the day she arrived. But several days after serving Elys, he couldn’t pry inside the old woman’s head anymore.

’Maybe she had cast a spell on her maidservant to prevent my magic,’ Aleksander speculated.

Elys cleared her throat, and the newly crowned vampire king shook his head clear of his previous thoughts. He turned to his wife and then responded to her earlier question.

"Your maidservant and Henry have probably arrived right now," Aleksander responded after a few seconds of silence.

"Then perhaps..."

"No," Aleksander immediately responded.

He knew what Elys was about to say.

"I didn’t even finish," she crossed her arms.

Elys wasn’t entirely mad herself, but she didn’t take it nicely too that her husband cut her off. Perhaps just a bit annoyed, but not enough to cause them an argument.

"It is much safer that you are with me," he said as he reached out to cup Elys’ face in his hands.

It was their first night since they forcefully took the throne and crown for themselves. Aleksander insisted they stay together for the meantime as he didn’t trust any of the servants in the palace.

His queen felt the coldness of his big hands cover the side of her face. She looked him straight tin the eyes and leaned her head towards his hand.

Aleksander’s eyes widened. He didn’t really think Elys would respond the way she did. Was his attempt to be nice working?

Suddenly, his wife laughed sarcastically.

Elys removed his hands from her face, and then leaned her body until her lips brushed towards Aleksander’s ear.

"As I have said, you don’t need to pretend and give me affection," Elys whispered, her breath sending tingling sensations on his ear.

Aleksander’s hairs stood on its ends. He could feel his body react to the stimulus of Elys’ whispers, his stomach feeling a bit queasy.

"My queen," Aleksander said, "you stab my heart when I try to be kind."

Elys tried to suppress a laugh but ended up scoffing instead, "A heart? I would like to see that if it does exist."

Aleksander frowned with her response, "Don’t you like me as I am now? Or do you prefer that I be the tyrant that everyone else see me as?"

"I would rather you keep your hands to yourself, my king, unless it is absolutely necessary that we touch each other."

The young vampire king leaned his arm over the banister, his attention directed at the capital where his queen is currently staring at.

"Wife, do you know that technically once a king and queen is coronated in our kingdom, it is tradition for the couple to try immediately for an heir?" Aleksander pointed out in a matter-of-fact tone. "If we hadn’t forcibly taken over the throne, we would have had an audience around our bed right now, making sure the kingdom’s future is secured."

Elys glanced at Aleksander and smirked, "Ah, but we did take over the throne by force. I’d much rather meet an assassin in bed."

Aleksander was about to retort, but out of the blue, several sharp and shiny objects came zipping between the two of them.
