Chapter 217: Chapter 217 - Proving himself
After seeing how serious his lawyer was, Eric decided to tell him the truth. As for Lai, he decided to ignore his presence.
"You don’t remember your birth family?"
Eric shook his head. "I don’t remember much before I was in that place... that man can do magic. I think he eased my mind."
Obviously, he couldn’t tell them about him being an escapee system. So, he just brought up his usual excuse, memory loss.
"The ghost boy said that I have been living there only for three years or so. Before me he was one the one who was living in that room," Eric glanced at the ghost boy who was intently looking at the empty bowls in front of him.
’Is he hungry?’ he gestured for his bowl.
The ghost boy nodded and licked his lips. Looking at him now, he resembled a cute hungry ghost. his mouth was watering so badly and his eyes were unfazed. He could not look at anything other than food.
’Can ghosts even eat?’
"j-Jung Shi? You suddenly got distracted there." Guan awkwardly glanced at the space next to the teenager. the empty chair was pulled out and placed in an awkward position like someone was sitting on it. weirdly, so he felt a chill pass through his body. He put on an unbreakable professional smile and continued asking questions.
Eric snapped back to reality. "I was held there against my will."
The lawyer got all the case photos on the table. "We did not see a barricade or any such physical barriers there. The windows were opened, and the door was too." Guan mumbled.
"The door only had a latch on the outside. And look at the handle of the latch. it’s completely worn out. it was probably used to lock someone in" Haolei added to this.
"But sometimes families will opt to have the door latch on the outside to keep the children safe. Kids lock themselves all the time. They could argue like that," Guan sighed, drinking a cup of water. "Jung, can you elaborate on how he used to trap you in your room? did he tie you up? Did he beat you? or did you give you something that made you very sleepy?"
Eric bit his bottom lip and closed his eyes. For a second he contemplated on lying to Guan. this lawyer was the only one who could save him from this predicament.
’I can lie to him but if I say the wrong thing it might end up making things much worse.... but will he believe me?’ he cast a doubtful gaze at his brother.
Haolei gently held his small trembling hand. "it’s okay. you can tell him everything. Guan is my friend he can be trusted and he is the best lawyer in our city. so, trust him."
Eric nodded at him and let out a deep breath. "He used a magic barrier."
Guan’s eyebrows twitched. He knew his friend said this was a special case but he did not realize this was that special. If he said that the boy was trapped in a magic barrier the whole court will laugh at him.
Leaning forward, he peered into his eyes. "Have you heard of the saying, you should never lie to a doctor and a lawyer? Because both of them have the power to save your life. If you do not want to end up in prison, I need you to tell me the exact truth.’
Eric frowned slightly. "I am telling you the truth my story might sound unbelievable but it’s the truth. That guy was a monk who practiced weird cultivation techniques and taught me too. he planned on sacrificing me on my fifteenth birthday and sucking all my powers away"
Guan’s mouth puckered. "Jung Shi, let me make this clear. the court will not believe in magic and woodoo stuff. so, you need to tell me exactly what...."
Haolei suddenly cupped his friend’s mouth. "What he meant to say is that we need to find a more believable reason!"
Guan pushed Haolei’s hand away "shh you don’t interfere, Jung Shi I am on your side."
"No, you are not. If you don’t believe that he can do magic you are not on my side." Eric glanced away.
Guan sighed slightly. "You said that man taught you magic. Can you show me some of those tricks?" he challengingly gazed at him.
Eric was stunned. He did not know any tricks. all he knew was how to cultivate and absorb the yin particles in the air. even if he showed them his cultivation method those poles would not be able to see yin energy.
’God, I feel useless.’
the ghost boy tugged at his hand. "Read.... book." he pointed to the small bag Haolei had placed on the table.
’Yeah, I can show them that...’ he hurriedly pulled the bag close and took out the book. "See. this was that monk’s. he used these techniques to cultivate. he didn’t teach me anything significant so I don’t think I can show you anything."
Guan carefully took the book from him with a paper towel covering his hand. "This is evidence. we should submit this."
Eric froze. "no!" the system had mentioned time and time again that this book is the key to completing this world. he did not wish for it to be locked in the evidence locker.
seeing this drastic reaction Guan smiled slightly. "Not right now... not right now." he flipped through the pages. his strong brows scrunched up as each page flipped by. "This looks like those sold by those monks in the road...."
"it’s the real deal!" Eric glared up at him.
"I’m sorry Jung Shi I don’t believe these frugal superstitions and practices... but I will not belittle your belief either."
the ghost boy pouted after hearing this, he moved close and whispered, "prove..."
Eric glanced his way with a frown. "But I don’t know how to make him believe..."
"Array... e-easy." the ghost boy said with difficulty.
Eric plucked the booking from his hand and flipped through the pages.
He saw the magic formation for the barrier in the second page itself.
This was not a complicated process at all but the caster has to be a strong cultivator to even think of casting such a spell. the formation has to be drawn mid-air with only magic.
Eric still had no control over his powers but to prove this smug guy he planned on trying.
Standing up, he walked over to the corner of the room.
’can I even do this.....’
hesitating, he glanced back. Haolei was looking at him with a smile ad Guan was giving him that professional look. as for Lai he looked like a dog that ate shit.
here no one would come and go. He held up his index finger and concentrated all his yin energy there.
to his surprise, the energy flowed out like ink out of a fountain pen. He started to draw in the air. Only he could see the sign and the wiggly lines he drew.
As he connected the lines altogether at last a huge gust of wind flowed into the restaurant.
Everyone, including Guan was stunned for a second.
Eric was shocked as well. He held his hands up and an invisible force was in front of him. "I did it.... I did it!!! look! I did it. come touch this!" he beckoned them here.
Guan skeptically glanced at Haolei.
Haolei thought did not bother with him or Lai. He stepped up to his brother and touched the spot he asked him to. he was pleasantly surprised feeling the weird force that was repelling his hand. "This is amazing... Jung you’re amazing."
Eric smugly smiled up at him. "of course, I’m a self-taught genius."
Hearing this chatter, Guan walked up to them with a small frown. "You don’t have to play along, hao. This is a serious matter. If he has any mental problems we can definitely show the court that he is not stable enough to defend himself and we can change the way the investigation goes....." he was suddenly yanked and tossed to that corner.
Guan felt a cushiony thing balance his fall. Glancing back, he saw that both his hands and his body was leaning against an invisible soft wall. It felt like the tension created when you are holding a cloth tight from both sides. It was a soft force, but it did not feel that harmful.
Eyes wide open, he fully turned over and touched the invisible wall. "t-this...."
"it’s magic. Do you believe now?"
"What? Are you guys for real?!" Lai ran up to the corner.
Without a word, Haolei pushed him face-first into the barrier.
With his face squished he saw that the actual walls were quite far from his face. Lai gently placed his face on the barrier and tried to push forward but that force repelled him and pushed him away. "Wow... wow! Like ow!!!! This is awesome!! If you can create one on the ground you can save anyone who is falling off the building. Its soft like a cloth too. This can save so many lives!!!!"
Haolei protectively hugged Eric close to his side. "No, he will not use his powers in public. It’s too risky. You guys don’t know what others will do if they discover his potential. I will never allow him to display his powers to anyone else..." he peered down at Eric. "let’s change the story a bit. we’ll say that the monster locked you in that room. say that he will beat you and starve you if you didn’t obey him, Is...is that okay with you?"
Eric wordlessly hugged him. "Anything brother says."
"Good boy... don’t show your powers to anyone else. It’s very dangerous. This world is unpredictable and there are powerful people living here."
