Chapter 179: Chapter 179 - There’s a corpse underground
Eric hesitantly stood by the doorway, shuffling his foot. occasionally He would cast a few glances at his so-called master.
The monk finally looked at him with a small impatient smile. "its time to sleep, Jung. Why are you still here?"
"My room... can I stay in another room?"
"Why?" the man’s eyes narrowed sharply.
"I’m scared to sleep... it’s cold in that room," he whispered, peering at the ground. ’oh come on fall for my pitiful look. At least give me another room. That ghost boy will come again and claim it as his room... don’t want that...’
He glanced up, acting all fearful.
The Taoist monk just looked at him intently. "Go back to your room," he repeated impatiently.
Eric did not wish to test him any further. He tottered over to his small room. He stood in front of the open door with a deep frown. "Should I buy that peach blossom branch? No... its too costly."
Shaking his head, he stepped in. his tatami mat was still by the doorway. He picked I up. And under it was that mirror shard.
He tenderly took it with a piece of cloth and tossed it into the pond opposite his room.
Only after that did he feel assured.
"There, problem solved. Didn’t need to spend 39.99 for that," he cheerfully jumped into his room and laid down on the tatami mat.
The day of cultivation relay made him exhausted. Plus, he had not been eating any substantial source of carbs since morning. Eating only fruits was not enough. He peed once and everything was gone.
His stomach was slightly growling.
"Is this monk a cruel one or a good guy? I don’t know... this guy really likes to starve me for sure."
The exhaustion hit him, and his eyes started to droop. He once again looked at the locked door. "Nothing will happen. Its outside. The ghost boy will haunt the hallways. As long as he doesn’t bother me scratching that thing." He mumbled finally succumbing to sleep.
"scratch, scratch, scratch,......"
Eric’s eyes snapped open. Slowly in disbelief, he looked at the end of the tatami mat.
The black figure sat there scratching the mirror shard.
He slowly backed away. "o-oh... you’re back... I thought you might like the hallways much better. It’s airy and cool... you can even have a look at the koi from there. This room does not even have a window..." he tremblingly smiled at the figure.
The ghost boy only glanced up. his jet-black face made it hard to distinguish his features. From his size, Eric guessed that he was about the same age as him.
He vigilantly watched him as the kid scratch and scrape the mirror shard on the uneven cement floor. He would occasionally look his way.
After observing for so long, he finally concluded that the kid meant no harm. So he started to implore more.
The fear he had over him had minimized as time went on.
Slowly he approached him. ’Ghosts can’t do anything to me. If so, I will scream and that monk will come. That guy will exorcist him...’ he thought with renewed confidence.
"Boy, what is your name?"
The ghost boy glanced up at him without a word.
"You don’t remember?"
the boy nodded.
"Oh...... do you remember how you came here? You said this was your room, yes?"
The boy nodded vigorously. "My room," he mumbled as he continued to scratch the mirror shard.
"You like scratching the mirror? Why?"
The ghost boy froze. His whole figure seemed to emit a black miasma out of him. Black dots he had seen in the garden gushed out of him.
’Okay, that was the wrong question. I have to distract him again.;’
"Oh look! It’s my mat. Is all curled up!" he pointed to the end where he was sitting.
the tatami mat had been rolled up for quite long had a stubborn curl to the edges. he pointed to one such edge.
The boy paused. He placed the mirror down and tried to unfurl the tatami mat. But to his surprise, the mat cursed up again.
The boy once again fixed it.
the mat curled up.
Eric watched the boy excitedly try to fix the mat. ’Thank god he is easy to distract.’ Taking a breath in he continued his questioning. "How old are you? Just nod when I saw the number, yes? Twelve?"
the boy shook his head.
"Eighteen?"
Ghost boy once again shook his head.
"Between fourteen and eighteen?"
He nodded.
"Oh... so fifteen?"
The ghost boy excitedly nodded. He even crawled closer and handed eth mirror shard to him.
With trembling hands, Eric took the offered mirror from him. "oh... you’re fifteen. I’m going to be fifteen soon. We are the same age."
The boy’s translucent hand suddenly trembled. "Run."
"huh? Wha... I thought we were having a lovely conversation yes. Why must I..."
The ghost boy grabbed his hand. A deep chilling feeling invaded his bones making him shiver violently.
"Run."
After whispering this, he disappeared into the mirror shard.
Eric trembled violently as he wiped at his hands. He could still feel the cold feeling in his skin. "Why must I run? Kid, answer me properly?"
The mirror boy did not appear again that night.
Eric who had grown out of his fear also sleep peacefully.
The next day that Taoist monk woke him up quite earlier than usual. This time, he cupped his face and peered into his eyes anxiously. "Did you see anything weird yesterday?"
After a moment of contemplation, Eric said no.
The ghost boy genuinely did not mean any harm to him. If he told this monk now, he might easily exorcist him. He did not want that. Plus, he wanted to know why the child told him to run.
’What kind of danger lurks here.... who was that kid? How did he get here?’
"If you see any ghosts, you have to tell me, master will exorcist them,"
Eric nodded obediently. "Master why do one become a ghost and wander around?"
"Anyone who dies before their appropriate time will turn into a ghost. Some simply wait around until their time in this world is fulfilled, but some have evil intension. They will hurt others to prolong their stay here,"
"Why do they hurt people?"
"Ghosts are made up of purely yin energy. But our air is made up of yin and yang. They won’t be able to hold on for a long. Some ghosts would not be able to wait until their appropriate time and dissipate. So, the desperate ones try to suck up essence from other humans. This in turn harms and in the worst cases kills the human. That’s why we exist. We Taoist monks have to exorcist them and send them to their after life,"
"oh, I see," Eric smiled up at him. "so, a ghost can travel anywhere they want to? That sounds kind of cool though,"
"Nonsense. They can’t travel anywhere they want to. Their ghostly body is bound to the spot where their body is buried."
Eric’s whole body trembled for a second. "You mean they... can’t move around?"
"They can’t. Why are you asking so many questions? All of these subjects will be taught after you open your yin and yang eyes. You don’t need to know them now,"
"I was just being curious." He slightly glanced back at his room.
The ghost boy said that that room was his. And he had been appearing every night without fail. That could only mean that his body was somewhere close by.
’What if it’s in the floor like in those movies? Ahhhhh I’ve been sleeping above a corpse... fucking hell what is this! I can’t believe this is even happening!’
He picked through the fruits in a dazed state.
"what is it? Why aren’t you eating your fruits?"
"I don’t feel that hungry, master." Eric smiled at him and pushed the small leaf plate away.
The Taoist monk gave him a weird look but did not force him to eat. He directly led him over to eth cultivation room again,
Eric was not able to concentrate at all. Just the thought that there was a corpse in his room gave him the chills. Even worse was when he thought about HOW the corpse ended up in his room, he started to fear this whole place.
Especially the monk who changed his face often.
He carefully took a look at the man’s face. ’System, get me a life-saving potion and a calming crystal.’
{’one life-saving potion and calming crystal coming right up. A total of 50 coins has been deduced. total of 35 coins have been deducted,’}
The potion appeared in his palm subtly. He secretly hid it in his clothes. To his surprise, he touched something sharp on there.
He pulled it out to find a shiny mirror.
His hand trembled. He hurriedly placed it back in his clothes. ’How did it get in my robe? I remember keeping it on the ground after that boy gave it to me. Fucking hell, this place is scary! Very very scary!!!’
