Chapter 141: Chapter 139: Visiting the Scene

Xia Ling had left, and Long Chen also left the company and returned home.

Long Chen had been paying close attention to many updates online about the disaster area.

"Honey, what are you looking at? Who are you chatting with?"

Zhao Churan hadn’t gone to work today and seemed rather relaxed.

"I’m looking at the disaster situation in South County," Long Chen said.

"I saw it too," Zhao Churan replied. "I hope they’re safe."

"Churan, what would you say they most need right now?" Long Chen asked.

"There are many things needed, emergency food, various simple and convenient daily necessities, medicine particularly for pain relief and stopping bleeding, and anti-infection drugs—all in large demand," Zhao Churan explained.

"She should be preparing these," Long Chen muttered to himself.

"Who’s preparing?" Zhao Churan, puzzled, asked. "A friend of yours?"

"Uh, yes, I’ve asked her to donate supplies to the disaster area, but I feel it’s not enough," Long Chen contemplated aloud. "Maybe they need more effective means of stopping pain, bleeding, and infection."

"Huh? Honey, are you out of your mind? I know you care about the disaster area, and I know you are extraordinarily skilled in medicine, but you aren’t planning to go there yourself, are you?" Zhao Churan immediately tensed.

"You’re right," Long Chen said gravely. "I do want to go there in person to help."

"Honey, it’s still very dangerous after the major quake. I... I know your personal support is the right thing, but I am scared, I’ll worry," Zhao Churan, clinging to Long Chen’s arm, admitted.

Long Chen gently patted Zhao Churan’s shoulder and said softly, "Don’t worry, nothing will happen. If I weren’t capable, I wouldn’t go. After all, if I were to go there unprepared, I would contribute to the chaos rather than help, and why would I add to the chaos in the disaster area?"

"But..."

"No buts, just wait for me at home," Long Chen said with a smile.

"Alright, just be safe," Zhao Churan, filled with worry, said.

Yet Zhao Churan knew she couldn’t stop Long Chen from going, nor did she have a reason to.

In truth, Zhao Churan felt proud that Long Chen could make such a decision. But worry was uncontrollable.

"Let Yuechan know that I’ll be in the disaster area and might not have signal or anything like that. Tell her not to worry; nothing will happen," Long Chen said.

"Mhm."

"I’m leaving now," Long Chen stood up decisively.

"Honey, can you wait another half an hour before you leave?" Zhao Churan hastily stood up and embraced Long Chen.

"Why?" Long Chen asked, puzzled.

"I don’t know how long you’ll be gone. Can you love me one more time before you go?" Zhao Churan looked at Long Chen with pleading eyes.

Long Chen chuckled and replied, "I’ll save it for when I get back, behave."

...

Soon after, Long Chen boarded a high-speed train headed to the disaster area.

However, the train could not reach the disaster area directly due to the damaged roads near the area, posing a significant safety risk.

Therefore, he had to disembark in a neighboring city and switch transportation.

After getting off, Long Chen looked around for a while, but couldn’t find an empty vehicle; they were mainly filled with medical personnel or volunteers.

After about fifteen minutes, when Long Chen saw no other options, he saw an ambulance racing towards him and didn’t hesitate to stop it.

There were seven medical staff inside. Seeing someone trying to stop the ambulance, a middle-aged doctor sitting in the back seat sternly said, "Cheng Cheng, tell him to move aside. Don’t delay us from saving lives."

"Yes," from the front passenger seat, a girl with a ponytail stuck her head out of the window and shouted to Long Chen, "Sir, please step aside, we’re in a hurry to save people."

"I want to join you because I’m also here to save people," Long Chen said seriously.

"We already have seven people, and the vehicle is packed with medical chests. It would be inconvenient to take you," Cheng Cheng explained.

"That’s all the more reason to take me," Long Chen insisted. "If the car encounters a problem midway, I can help carry the medical chests or do other hard labor without causing any trouble."

"Um," Cheng Cheng paused, finding his point quite reasonable.

She turned to the senior doctor, "Teacher Gao, I think he has a point. Having an extra person to do the heavy lifting isn’t bad."

"Then let him get on quickly, but he can’t sit in the back. He’ll have to squeeze up front with you," Gao Xun ordered sternly.

"Okay."

Cheng Cheng immediately opened the door, allowing Long Chen to get in.

Long Chen hesitated a moment, then quickly got in and squeezed in next to Cheng Cheng.

The two were very close, but Long Chen didn’t think much of it, and Cheng Cheng was extremely composed.

The medical staff in the back were all somewhat curious about this volunteer who had come unprepared.

Gao Xun asked him directly, "I know you’re eager to help, but you’ve come here completely unprepared. What can you do once you’re inside, or do you have any special abilities?"

"Being strong and lucky, do those count?" Long Chen asked with a smile.

"Let’s say they do, but I warn you, once we’re in the disaster area, you need to follow our lead and not cause any trouble. Also, we’re heading to the affected villages around South County City, which might be even more dangerous than being in South County City itself. We might lose contact with the outside world and face various unforeseen emergencies. If you’re scared, it’s not too late to get off now."

Gao Xun said.

"Don’t worry about me, I’m worried about you guys not being able to withstand it," Long Chen said.

"Hmph, we have undergone professional training, and Teacher Gao Xun has a lot of experience in disaster relief. You think you’re like him? He’s kindly reminding you, don’t be ungrateful,"

Cheng Cheng added from the side.

Long Chen was stunned for a moment.

This girl’s words, seemingly a reminder for himself, were actually indirectly introducing Long Chen.

"What’s your name?"

"Cheng Cheng." While saying this, she opened a bottle of Coke to drink.

But she had only taken a sip when Long Chen stopped her.

"What?"

Cheng Cheng frowned.

"Women shouldn’t drink Coke during their special period, as carbonated drinks will hinder the absorption of ’iron’," Long Chen whispered.

"I’m not on my period at all, what nonsense are you spouting? Give it back."

Cheng Cheng snatched the Coke back, but she did not drink any more and silently screwed on the cap.

At this moment, however, she actually was not on her period, so she just regarded Long Chen as talking nonsense.

Until ten minutes later when the car bumped along the road, Cheng Cheng’s expression suddenly turned extremely strange.

Because she felt her period had started.

But now Cheng Cheng found it difficult to bring it up, as stopping the car might delay the rescue mission because of her alone.

But if they didn’t stop, she felt somewhat unbearable.

Just as Cheng Cheng was unsure of what to do, Long Chen suddenly said, "Stop the car."

"What for?"

The driver asked.

"I need to pee," Long Chen said.

"Hold it in, another ten minutes should do it. The map shows a village not far ahead," Gao Xun said.

"I can’t hold it, or else I’d end up peeing in the car, if the female colleagues don’t mind."

Long Chen said.

"Are you behaving like a hooligan?" Gao Xun said, furrowing his brows tightly. "Stop the car, let him relieve himself. Young man, you’ve only got thirty seconds."

Upon hearing Gao Xun’s words, the driver also braked sharply and stopped.

Long Chen did not get out of the car immediately but took off his jacket and tossed it into Cheng Cheng’s arms.

Cheng Cheng was stunned and looked at Long Chen quizzically.

Long Chen whispered, "Cover yourself with this, and then, don’t you need to get off and take care of it too?"

Hearing this, Cheng Cheng finally understood his intention.

He probably didn’t really need to relieve himself but was helping her avoid the embarrassment of asking to stop the car.

That moment, Cheng Cheng’s heart inexplicably felt very warm.

Meanwhile, Cheng Cheng remembered that earlier Long Chen had mentioned she shouldn’t drink Coke during her period, yet at that time, her period hadn’t started. How did he know it was about to come? Was it a coincidence?

Cheng Cheng dared not ponder this question deeply because it was somewhat terrifying and defied logic.

But Cheng Cheng vaguely felt this man was no simple character.

Two minutes later, Cheng Cheng and Long Chen both returned to the car, and the journey continued.

However, they hadn’t gone much further when the driver suddenly braked hard.

"What happened?"

Gao Xun asked anxiously.

"Doctor Gao, there’s been a landslide ahead, the road is blocked, and we can’t get through."

The driver said with a bitter smile.

"We’re already near that village. Since a landslide has occurred here, that means the village must also be in great danger. Everyone get out of the car, grab your medical kits, we need to climb over."

Gao Xun decisively ordered.

Everyone immediately grabbed their medical kits and got out of the car, Long Chen also took a large medical kit, strapped it over his shoulder.

"Teacher Gao, how do we get across? This mountain road is narrow, with a cliff on the side and blocked by a landslide in the middle, and the right side also looks dangerous, like there’s no other path to take."

Cheng Cheng quietly asked.

After thinking for a moment, Gao Xun said, "Although there’s a landslide, the fallen mud and stones are dry, we can cross over them. Thankfully, it hasn’t rained; otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to get across."

"Teacher Gao, but I see that rocks still occasionally fall down..."

Cheng Cheng hesitated.

"No matter what, we must get across. Here’s what we’ll do, let three people stay here and wait. If we run into danger, those who stay behind remember to alert outsiders. If we successfully get across, the ones who stayed should return the same way and go elsewhere to assist. Who wants to stay?"

Gao Xun asked.

What he really wanted to ask all those present was whether anyone was too frightened to take the risk, but he phrased it in a more tactful way.

"I’ll wait for you guys," the driver volunteered first.

"Alright, anyone else?"

"Doctor Gao, I...I’m willing to stay."

"I’m also willing."

Two nurses said in a low voice with pale faces.

"Okay, is there anyone else willing to stay?" Gao Xun looked around, his gaze lingering on Long Chen.

However, Long Chen silently took the medical kits from the two nurses and strapped them onto his back by himself.

This action considerably improved Gao Xun’s impression of Long Chen.

He hadn’t expected, with a few of his people already showing fear, this young man remained so composed.

"No matter how difficult it is, the injured in the disaster area need us. We, as medical professionals, should bear the responsibility. Let’s move."

Gao Xun commanded, leading the way at the front.
