The Return Of His Ex Wife -
Chapter 27: Doubts At Home
Chapter 27: Doubts At Home
Derek’s POV
I didn’t understand why Melissa loved doing things to make my blood rise! "You will leave this place right now! You understand me??"
"Stop yelling, Nina isn’t asleep." Melissa whispered, dragging me to our room then she shut the door right. "Okay Derek, why have you been treating me this way! I have always been there for you. I care about you and I listen to everything you say--"
"--you called my mother spewing nonsense! This isn’t the first time, and I have warned you severally. Are you so stupid you don’t listen at all?? I hate when you do stuff like this! And do you know the worse--"
Her phone rang again for like the 100th time that evening. "Melissa, are you cheating on me??"
She scoffed, unable to hide the shock in her eyes. Shock? Was she actually cheating on me??
"Baby, it’s not what you think--" she pleaded but I snatched the phone from her hand to look at who had been calling.
"Who’s this? Who’s Donovan?? Answer me, Melissa!" I didn’t like raising my voice at her but she really was starting to frustrate me.
"It’s nothing. Really, you don’t have anything to worry about!" She yelled in defense.
My blood was already boiling hot, "give me the phone. Right now." I snatched the phone from her hand and picked the call as the person had been calling again. "Hello there! Why have you been calling my wife since? Who the hell do you think you are, huh? Answer me right now!"
"Derek calm down." Melissa pleaded. I could see the fear residing in her eyes. What the hell! She really was cheating on me, why?? I was doing everything a good man should do, even after finding out her dark secret, I still stayed and supported her!
"Hey, is Melissa Howard your wife? Thank God, uh, she forgot her ID card at the store, so I’m just calling to let her know it’s safe here." The voice on the phone explained. I shot Melissa a questioning look, "hello are you there? Tell Melissa to come pick up her card at the grocery store where she forgot it."
"No, I’ll come with Melissa to pick up the ID card. I’m hanging up now." I didn’t wait to hear what he was about to say before I actually hung up. "So we’re going to the store tomorrow morning before I leave for work."
"Okay." Melissa agreed instantly with a big nod. That was too suspicious too! Why would she cheat on me though? I provide for her, I love and care for her, why would someone cheat on their partner??!
I felt a pang of pain in my chest as disappointment struck me hard. I cheated on Tara. With Melissa. I have wronged Tara. She was so arrogant back then that I panicked! Who was she to divorce me??? What if I never wanted to marry Melissa then, huh? Tara should have been calmer with me, she should have begged me! But then, I should have been better to her.
"Your phone is ringing," Melissa cut me off my thoughts. "Let me get it for you," she hurried towards my desk by the bedside to fetch my phone, but froze right on track. "Derek, who is this?"
"What is it? Why are you looking through my phone, Melissa, bring it over here."
"It says it’s a call from Tara. What Tara is this! Your ex wife??"
Wait, she didn’t know this before??
I had just been pestering her that she was cheating on me, and here I was receiving calls from my own ex wife. "It’s business related."
Melissa looked at me with displeasure. Hatred, maybe? But I didn’t care. "Give me the phone right now." I commanded. When she didn’t answer me on time, I snatched the phone from her. "Hey Tara, why are you calling me late at night? My wife and I were in the middle of something important."
I heard a grunted voice over at the end at the phone, like she didn’t give a fuck what I was saying, damn it! Tara and her goddamn pride!
"Sorry for disturbing whatever the heck it was you were doing. But I have work issues to discuss with you." She said.
I looked towards Melissa, seeing her face boiling. "Then you should have called me in the morning."
"You’re right. Anyway, as you must have known by now, I’ve settled the case with the Hernandez woman. We’re good now, so she invited us to her party. It’s a couples theme party by the way, so make sure you come with someone so you don’t embarrass yourself."
"Okay then. I hope you dress good that night for me, I trust you though." I didn’t care the looks Melissa flashed at me. This was strictly business! Nina screeched out loud so suddenly that I nearly had a panic attack. Melissa was the one who rushed out, hurrying to attend to our daughter’s needs, while I remained in the room flirting shamelessly with Tara.
"Is everything okay back there??" She asked, seeming worried.
"Oh no. It’s nothing. My daughter is just playing really loud. Melissa has gone to check up on her." I wish I hadn’t been too specific but it was too late to take anything back.
"Oh okay, that’s good then. I’ll hang up now."
"No wait! Remember when I said I couldn’t wait to see you in your most gorgeous dress at the party? We’re still on that."
There was a pause, like she had mean and dangerous things to say, but she kept quiet.
"Listen. I know you’re still angry at me. But I feel it would be a good idea that we should go to this party together. It would speak well for our partnership, don’t you think so?"
"No, Derek. Never." She said so fast without any hesitation. Tara must still really hate me. I needed to change that, and fast. Melissa was starting to cheat on me anyway.
"What? It’s not like you have a date or anything. Just come with me. Melissa is likely going to be busy on that day."
"Derek, I have a date. And even if I didn’t have a date, I would never have stolen Melissa’s cue to enjoy a nice relaxing date with her dearest husband."
I actually chuckled to that. "What is this now, are you jealous of Melissa?" I teased, waiting for her to blush and take her time to respond. But instead, I got that annoying new Tara’s cold vibes; seriously, what is wrong with her and her pride??
"I’m hanging up now, Derek. Next time when you get into trouble at work, I want to be the first person to know about it."
"Wait wait, who are you taking to that party? I didn’t know you were seeing someone." I let my curious side take over. She couldn’t possibly be going with that Hernandez guy--
"That’s my business, Derek. But since we work together and you’re trying so hard to be my number one fan, his name is Arlo Hernandez. You can Google him if you want to. We both know how your arrogant curious side possesses you all the time."
Her words struck me like a lightning would. What?? She was going out with that Hernandez guy??
"Tara, why would you betray me like that! I don’t understand--"
"Mommy, is that my daddy you’re talking to?"
What the..."Tara, who is that? Is that-- hello?. Tara?? Damn it, she hung up. So this was it? She was willing to do anything for her business, right! Like sleeping with Mrs Hernandez son to resolve our issue?? But wait, that Hernandez guy had told me he and Tara had come a long way together, so they must have already been dating for a while now! Was this jealousy I was feeling? I didn’t know Tara could move on like that! She didn’t love me anymore?
