Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Pressure Given to An Yan
"College entrance exam scores! The lowest score in our class was 627. As long as you..."
"Sorry to interrupt, but I didn’t take the college entrance exam," An Yan said nonchalantly.
The bespectacled man was stunned for a moment. "How did you get into Luocheng University without taking the college entrance exam?"
Xu Muwei found another opportunity to interject, "Chen Xiangyu, you must not have been listening just now. She got in because her family donated a building to the university."
Chen Xiangyu adjusted his glasses. "Classmate, if that’s the case, I’m afraid you don’t qualify to stay in Class One."
"Whether or not I’m qualified is not for you to decide," An Yan replied coldly. "College entrance exam scores represent your past, not your present, and certainly not your future! I don’t know what you’re so proud of."
Chen Xiangyu frowned. "You’re right, college entrance exam scores don’t represent the present. So, classmate, it just so happens we have a test today. If you can score higher than the lowest-scoring student in our class, we’ll recognize you as a member of Class One. Otherwise, please leave Class One. Is that okay?"
"No!" An Shimeng spoke up in a rush. "No, that’s not okay! My sister just arrived; she hasn’t attended any classes. She’s sure to fail. Class President, please let my sister stay in our class for a few more days. Can we have the test next time instead?"
"Mengmeng!" Xu Muwei tugged at her sleeve. "Why do you keep speaking up for her? Wouldn’t it be fine if she just gets kicked out?"
"But that’s the truth." An Shimeng looked anxiously at Chen Xiangyu. "Class President, please."
Because of An Yan’s earlier passive-aggressive comments, many classmates suspected that An Shimeng had spread the rumors about An Yan. Now, seeing her so earnestly worried for An Yan, they wondered if there was more to the story. After all, An Shimeng was known to be good-looking, excel in her studies, and be amiable. In contrast, An Yan had appeared dismissive towards An Shimeng from the start, as if she wanted everyone to know her dissatisfaction.
Chen Xiangyu glanced impassively at Su Siming. Seeing him still whispering to Liang Chen without any intention of standing up for An Yan, Chen Xiangyu cleared his throat and said, "It’s not that I want to make things difficult for the new student. However, an exam is the most convenient and quickest way to prove one’s ability! What do you think, new classmate?"
The pressure shifted to An Yan. All eyes in the classroom were fixed on her.
They were all watching, eager to see what this new classmate was truly capable of. Having all gone through the college entrance exam, they knew that getting into Luocheng University and Class One required effective study methods. Methods that worked in high school should be just as effective in university. It wasn’t as if the new student hadn’t attended classes before; for them, it had only been a few months since high school, so the necessary knowledge should still be fresh. If she was afraid of even taking a test, then this new classmate indeed didn’t qualify to stay in Class One.
An Yan said, "What’s the big deal about an exam? Let’s do something bigger. If I’m not mistaken, a few of you are members of An Shimeng’s research paper group, right?"
"So what if we are?" Xu Muwei lifted her chin proudly.
Being chosen for An Shimeng’s research paper group was considered an honor. If they could publish a paper during their freshman year, it would be a bonus for postgraduate studies or future job prospects.
An Yan smiled. "Let’s compete on that. Whoever completes their research paper and gets it published first stays in this class. The ones who fail get out! The whole group. Do you dare?"
The members of An Shimeng’s team exchanged glances and internally agreed. Their paper’s outline was already complete, and obtaining the subsequent experimental data wouldn’t be difficult. Besides, if they declined a challenge from an academic underachiever, how could they ever face their classmates again?
Su Siming looked at An Yan in surprise. An exam only proves learning ability. A research paper, however, tests not just that but also the application of knowledge and logical thinking. That’s why some students, despite being excellent learners, struggle to get their papers approved.
Just as the group finished their discussion and was about to agree, An Shimeng jumped in, putting on a show. "Sister, my paper is a collaborative effort with six other students, while you’re alone. That’s not fair to you! Why don’t you also form a group of seven? Everyone, although my sister grew up in the countryside, she’s actually very capable. I hope you’ll all eagerly sign up to join my sister’s group!"
An Shimeng certainly didn’t think the competition was unfair to An Yan; she simply wanted to see An Yan isolated. Who asked her to say ’the whole group gets out’?! It was An Yan’s first day, she was in an unfamiliar place, and she already had the reputation of being a poor student. Any classmate with a bit of sense wouldn’t choose to team up with her. After all, who would want to be dragged down by a poor student?
Sure enough, as soon as An Shimeng finished speaking, the classmates averted their gazes, afraid An Yan might pick them. At the same time, they cursed An Shimeng inwardly. Your sister, your sister! Since she’s your sister, why don’t you just concede? You pretentious bitch!
An Shimeng, oblivious to having lost the crowd’s favor, continued to play the part of a generous and kind person, trying to persuade others to join An Yan’s group.
An Yan watched An Shimeng’s performance with amusement. She didn’t care about these petty tactics; she hadn’t planned on forming a team anyway. Taking them all on alone would be much more satisfying, wouldn’t it?
But then, Su Siming suddenly stood up. "An Yan, I’ll team up with you!"
He even pulled his deskmate up. "And him! The two of us will join you!"
Liang Chen pushed up the glasses on his nose bridge. His fine hair was clean and soft, and his eyebrows were dark. His ink-black eyes, framed by the glasses, held a touch of scholarly weariness. He would surely captivate countless girls if he wore a white lab coat.
An Yan merely glanced at him briefly before looking away. She had intended to refuse outright.
But seeing those two stand up and An Shimeng’s suddenly faltering composure, the corners of An Yan’s mouth curled up. "Alright, then the three of us will team up."
No sooner had she spoken than a soft, sweet voice came from nearby. "Me too! I want to join your team as well!"
Mu Enyu looked at An Yan eagerly. She had never seen such a dazzling person. From the moment An Yan stepped into the classroom, she had commanded the entire room. Mu Enyu even suspected that the new student planned to use the exam or competition to oust those she found disagreeable. And Mu Enyu found An Shimeng particularly disagreeable. An Shimeng loved forming cliques, like sororities and art clubs. When Mu Enyu refused to join An Shimeng’s sorority, she clearly felt ostracized by An Shimeng’s little group. Mu Enyu herself was gentle and tended to back down, but heaven knows how badly she wanted to slap An Shimeng across the face. An Yan did what Mu Enyu couldn’t! That’s why she liked An Yan and wanted to be with her.
An Yan looked at Mu Enyu. The girl had pale, delicate skin, almond-shaped eyes, willow-leaf eyebrows, and a few small freckles on her nose. Her waist-length black hair cascaded gently over her shoulders. Her gaze held admiration and adoration.
An Yan had seen such looks many times over the years and felt little. But—
