Chapter 301: Chapter 292: Small Commodity Wholesale Market
The next morning, they went straight to Xue Jianian’s house.
When Luo Xinyue arrived, everyone exchanged greetings.
"I’ll start," said Luo Xinyue. "I visited four places: the municipal government, the steel factory, the Urban Construction Bureau, and the textile factory, but didn’t find a suitable location. However, I have prepared the contract."
After looking it over, Xue Jianian felt that Lu Jingqiu had written it very well and comprehensively. Luo Xinyue, who didn’t understand these things, trusted anything written by Lu Jingqiu.
Xue Jianian said, "I also looked at a few office buildings yesterday, but nothing was suitable. In the afternoon, I researched beef soup. People here like spicy food, so I made some chili oil, and it tasted unique when drizzled on top."
With a smile on her lips, Luo Xinyue chuckled and asked, "Guess what I have found?"
"Seeing your expression, I know it’s not a small find. Spill it."
Encouraged by Lu Jingqiu, Luo Xinyue didn’t beat around the bush and hurriedly said, "I took some dry goods home yesterday, gave some to my mother and some to my mother-in-law. My mother works for the Women’s Federation, and my mother-in-law works for the railway.
I mentioned Niannian’s situation to them. I often go to Niannian’s store to buy fruits and vegetables. They both liked what they saw, and when they saw the dry goods, they thought they were good too. They said they would help Niannian ask around at work.
There’s also the issue of the storefront. My mother didn’t have a suitable one, but my mother-in-law said that next to the train station, two large buildings were just built and that there are storefronts available. Someone from their unit was planning to open a convenience store there, and the space was already chosen.
My mother-in-law mentioned that there were not many storefronts available, and I was so anxious that I went to check them out that afternoon. There were four storefronts, all with a good amount of space.
I took a liking to one on the edge, facing the street, next to the train station. On the side, there was a small open space where you could park and we could also place things. The space inside was a bit larger than the others and, most importantly, it was well-proportioned. I think it’s quite nice."
Xue Jianian and Lu Jingqiu were overjoyed. "A good proportion is great. How big is it?"
"The door was locked, so I just took a glance from outside, but it’s quite spacious."
Great, they only knew it was spacious without any specifics. Xue Jianian was impatient. Hearing that some families had already chosen their spaces, what if they were a day late and the space got taken? What would they do then?
Lu Jingqiu suggested, "It’s still early. Why don’t we go and take a look now? If it’s confirmed, we can let Niannian talk to her mother-in-law about the price. If it’s suitable, we can finalize it."
Checking his watch, Xue Jianian nodded. "Alright, let’s go."
So the three of them each took a bicycle and headed for the train station. The train station at that time was far from being as bustling as it would be later, but it was still quite busy with people.
However, Lu Jingqiu had some concerns: "The train station has a lot of passengers, but they’re all in a hurry. How many of them will stop here to eat?"
Upon hearing Lu Jingqiu’s words, the other two who had been excited cooled down. "Right, what do we do now?"
Xue Jianian responded, "We haven’t arrived at the location yet. Let’s discuss it when we get there."
"Indeed."
It took about twenty minutes to get from their homes to the train station.
Previously, when taking the train, they hadn’t noticed that two buildings had been constructed opposite the station.
Also, in front of the station’s square, a layer of low-rise buildings had been built.
Other than a security office, the rest of the rooms were rented out.
"Xinyue, you gave me quite a scare. I thought it was aligned with the station, but it’s actually across the street. These two buildings don’t look like residential buildings, more like office buildings," said Lu Jingqiu.
"My mother-in-law said they were planning to turn it into some sort of wholesale mini-mall or something," explained Luo Xinyue.
"A wholesale city, huh?" Lu Jingqiu laughed. She observed the area to the left and right in front of the buildings. To the rear was a residential area, the same on the left side, and to the right was an overpass. Just ahead was a major road, and in front of the site was a coal factory.
A coal factory, certainly wealthier than the Urban Construction Bureau.
Xue Jianian also laughed and said, "This is suitable--this one right here," pointing to the storefront Luo Xinyue had picked earlier.
It was the one on the far left, close to a residential area mainly inhabited by people working at the train station or the bus station.
Since the train station and the rural bus station were together, Luo Xinyue reasoned: "It’s suitable, isn’t it? Behind these two buildings, there is a courtyard supposedly designed for the convenience of the merchants for loading and unloading goods. It was done to avoid the congestion of large trucks on the roadside. They’ve made a small courtyard solely for receiving goods. If there’s a courtyard, there needs to be a gatekeeper, and an entrance hall. The entrance hall was built next to this particular room. The wall of the hall is on one side of the room, creating a space that is just right for us to store things."
"Yes, there’s parking available. Jingqiu, what do you think?"
"We can stay here for a couple of days to look around."
Xue Jianian said, "Leave this matter to me."
Luo Xinyue said, "We’re starting school tomorrow, how can you stay here?"
Xue Jianian replied with a secretive smile, "I’ll find someone."
"Alright then, I’ll leave this to you. I’ll go back this afternoon and let my mother-in-law know, so she can help inquire about the rent for this place."
Lu Jingqiu said, "I guess it won’t be cheap, this house is at least a hundred square meters."
"A hundred and twenty or thirty square meters, Qiuqiu, how big is your storefront?"
"Seventy or eighty square meters."
"Ah, that’s going to be double then."
Xue Jianian said, "Let’s ask first and see."
"Yeah, let’s head back home. Xinyue, you go to your mother-in-law’s place, and while you’re at it, help me ask when this building’s wholesale market will start renting out, and whether these stalls are only for rent or can be sold as well. If they’re for sale, make sure to ask about the price."
Luo Xinyue said, "Qiuqiu, are you trying to find a place for your cousin?"
"Yes."
The group split up, with Luo Xinyue heading straight to her mother-in-law’s house.
Xue Jianian wanted to check out the store, and Lu Jingqiu was planning to go home; they took the same route.
Along the way, Xue Jianian talked to her about Wei Jincheng’s discharge from the military.
Lu Jingqiu was unsurprised because in her previous life, Jincheng had also been discharged.
It was just that it happened a bit later this time around.
She didn’t even know if those things from her previous life were real or all just a dream, because many things now were completely different from that past life.
She felt that the present was the present and comparing it with that uncertain past life was meaningless.
What mattered was simply to strive for a better life now."
"What was Comrade Wei thinking?"
"There were many reasons he left the troops, but whatever he decides to do, I support him. He’s never been someone who settles down easily, and he couldn’t be held back by the army. Seeing the good opportunities outside, he wanted to take a chance and start with selling grains and dried goods."
Lu Jingqiu didn’t say much else, after all, it was someone else’s life, someone else’s decision. We can hardly figure out our own lives, so it wasn’t right to judge or advise others: "We’re all still young, and wanting to venture out is pretty good. Does this mean you’ll have more free time in the future?"
"Yeah, sort of, I’ll still be busy with what needs to be done."
Lu Jingqiu laughed, "If we manage to get our store up and running, you really won’t have any free time."
"Haha, that’s true. It all depends on Xinyue now."
"Do you think we should look at other places too?"
Xue Jianian replied, "Right now in West City, there really aren’t any other suitable places. Didn’t you visit several locations yesterday?"
"Yes, and speaking of which, this house is indeed suitable."
"Jingqiu, do you think future houses will all come with storefronts?"
"It’s possible."
